Chapter 3

Author: Triple Threat
Tyler's POV

Just then, a man's voice came from the side. "Can you take a look to see if my wedding ring's too loose, Yvonne?"

Yvonne turned her head to the side and replied, "I'll be right there."

She looked at me again and asked, "Do you have anything else to say, Tyler? If not, I'll hang up now."

I lowered my eyes, looked at the woman on the screen, and finally couldn't help but ask, "Do you truly want to marry me, Yvonne?"

Yvonne was stunned for a moment before smiling faintly. "Of course, Tyler. I mean, we've been together for seven years. Life is only so long. Of course, I want to marry you."

I merely nodded as my finger stayed on the chat interface for Yvonne's family group chat. I had typed out a message three minutes ago. "I'd like to announce that, after discussion and agreement by both parties, the wedding set for the day after tomorrow has been canceled."

I had wanted to spare her some embarrassment, but now, I deleted the message word by word. I then said, "Got it."

The following day, I shipped my belongings back to my hometown. Yvonne's mother, Diana Lowe, suddenly called me and said, "You should come over for lunch today, Tyler. Yvonne is back."

She paused briefly before adding with a smile, "She has also brought along a friend, Harry. I thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce you to each other."

Diana was a very "gracious" person. She smiled and offered me drinks when Yvonne took me to her place for the first time. She complimented my looks, then proceeded to ask about my education, my family background, and how much money I made a month.

I answered her questions one by one, feeling more nervous than I had during my thesis defense. I was terrified that I wouldn't measure up as a son-in-law for her.

Diana seemed delighted, remarking that it was a stroke of good luck for their whole family that Yvonne had found a boyfriend like me.

Yet, when she turned around to call Yvonne into the kitchen to wash some fruit, I heard her sigh and say regretfully, "It's such a shame, Yvonne. The one before was still the better choice."

I knew that the one before was none other than Harry. Yvonne never told me about him—I had discovered it myself.

From then on, every time I visited Diana's place, that name would automatically pop into my head.

I was finally going to meet that man today. I had just arrived when I noticed that the living room was already crowded. Harry sat in the center of the couch, while Yvonne sat beside him, carefully peeling a piece of apple for him.

It was something she had never done for me in the past seven years we had been together.

Seeing me walk through the door, Diana instantly rose to her feet. "You're finally here, Tyler!"

She pulled me over, then pointed at Harry and said, "This is Harry Chapman, Yvonne's former classmate. He's an exceptionally outstanding man. He made a special trip here to attend the wedding after finding out that Yvonne is getting married."

She then turned to Harry and said, "Harry, I'd like you to meet Tyler Wright."

I noticed the difference in how we were introduced, but I didn't call her out. I just found a place and sat down quietly.

Diana went on making small talk with Harry. "Did you get wedding photos taken while you were in Alveria, Harry? You really should have told me earlier about something so important!"

Harry smiled sheepishly and said, "Oh, Mrs. Mullen…"

Diana smiled knowingly and asked, "Why don't you just call me 'Mom' already, Harry?"

"Mom!" Yvonne suddenly interrupted, her gaze briefly darting in my direction. "Tyler is still here!"

In that instant, the atmosphere in the living room grew tense.

Diana acted as if she had only just realized her mistake, saying sheepishly, "I merely misspoke. I just like Harry so much that I think of him as my own son."

She slid the box of wedding favors on the table over to me, grabbed a handful of candy, and pressed it into my palm. "You should have some of these wedding favors, Tyler."

I unwrapped a candy and popped it into my mouth, finding it more bitter than ever. "Thanks, Mrs. Mullen."

I didn't bother addressing her as "Mom". She wasn't worthy of it.

I hadn't expected that she also knew about Yvonne and Harry's wedding, but I still didn't make a scene. I didn't feel like there was any point. I was just waiting for tomorrow, waiting to see their expressions when they learned that the wedding had been canceled.

  • The Wedding's Ready, but My Bride Isn't   Chapter 14

Tyler's POVI didn't spend the night before the wedding personally taking care of every detail until dawn like I had the last time.Wanda cared about the wedding even more than I did. She went with me to choose the flowers, took the initiative to drag me to fittings, and verified the guest list repeatedly. She even earnestly asked for my opinion on the invitation font to make sure I liked it.I smiled and teased her for caring about even the smallest details.Yvonne merely said, "You ought to know that a wedding isn't just about going through the motions. It's me showing everyone that I truly treasure you, Tyler."It was a beautiful day during our wedding. I was standing in front of the altar in my wedding suit.Ruben was an absolute emotional wreck as he sat among the guests. He wiped at his tears while mouthing to me, "You deserve this, Tyler."I smiled as I nodded. It was then that the officiant turned to Wanda and asked, "Do you, Wanda Zachman, take Tyler Wright to be your

Tyler's POVI was somewhat taken aback. "I've only just joined the company, Ms. Zachman.""What of it?" Wanda asked as she looked calmly at me. "If someone has the ability, they deserve the opportunity—experience alone doesn't decide everything."I suddenly felt a lump in my throat at that moment. I finally realized what it felt like to be respected. It wasn't being dismissed with a careless "up to you". It wasn't being told to go wash dishes in the kitchen. It wasn't voicing your needs just to have someone say, "You're being ridiculous."It meant having someone actually recognize you—recognize your competence, your choices, and you as a whole person. It all happened in a flash. It went so fast that by the time I thought about Yvonne again, the heartache was gone. I caught wind of her through mutual friends once in a while. They said things between her and Harry had completely blown up.Yvonne had covered most of the expenses for the wedding in Alveria—the diamond rings, wedding

  • The Wedding's Ready, but My Bride Isn't   Chapter 12

Tyler's POVI chose not to respond anymore because the evidence spoke for itself. I knew that a genuinely powerful retaliation didn't require crying or shouting. It just required laying out the truth for everyone to see.Yvonne soon posted a lengthy apology on her social media. She described herself as stupid, selfish, and weak. She expressed regret for my seven years of commitment and stated that the wedding in Alveria was the greatest mistake of her life. She admitted that I had never let her down and that she was the one who personally ruined our relationship. Her apology didn't win over the netizens, though."An apology doesn't undo anything.""You aren't sorry because you know you're wrong; you're sorry because you know you're screwed.""He's been through enough already, so stop dragging him into this mess.""Your belated affection is worth absolutely nothing."Harry, however, refused to admit his mistake. He went on a live stream to cry, claiming he wasn't the homewreck

  • The Wedding's Ready, but My Bride Isn't   Chapter 11

Tyler's POVYvonne said, "I'm begging you, Tyler. We've been together for seven years. I mean, we only get so many years in this life."I merely looked at her. I had asked myself that exact question countless times before. I had struggled to let go precisely because it had been seven years. I chose to tolerate it a bit longer because it had been seven years. I believed she would change for the better because it had been seven years. I finally realized, however, that I shouldn't keep hurting myself for the sake of those seven years. Those seven years were simply proof that I was cutting my losses before it was too late.I stated flatly, "It's precisely because a person only has so many years in life that I won't waste my next seven years on you, Yvonne."Yvonne's face turned deathly pale.I walked right past her.Yvonne suddenly threw her arms around me from behind, speaking through her tears. "Please don't leave me, Tyler! Please don't abandon me! I'll cut Harry off compl

  • The Wedding's Ready, but My Bride Isn't   Chapter 10

Tyler's POVYvonne continued, "I'll focus entirely on you from now on. You and I can still register our marriage just like we had planned and go on living our lives as usual. I'll definitely make it up to you, Tyler."I looked at her, and a sudden wave of absurdity hit me. "Do you honestly still think that my only concern is whether you officially marry me in the end, Yvonne?"Yvonne was stunned. "Isn't it?"I smiled faintly and replied, "Of course not."I took my phone out of my pocket and opened the spreadsheet. "I have a few questions for you."Yvonne stared at the screen, her expression gradually shifting.I said, "I spent the entire night waiting for you on my 25th birthday, and you told me you had to work overtime at the last minute. Where did you actually go, Yvonne?"Yvonne's lips parted slightly. "I—""You'd better be honest with me."Yvonne lowered her gaze and said, "I went to the movies with Harry.""Why?""Harry was in a bad mood that day."I nodded and struck

  • The Wedding's Ready, but My Bride Isn't   Chapter 9

Tyler's POVYvonne looked down at the engagement ring in her palm and said tremblingly, "Tyler returned the engagement ring to me, so he definitely doesn't want me anymore."The video came to an end right at that point.Ruben sent me a message then. "That felt so vindicating! Do you really not plan to set things straight with Yvonne, Tyler?"I stared at my phone for a long time before replying, "It's not necessary."It wasn't a matter of having nothing to say after being together for seven years. It was simply that I had already said everything that needed to be said over the course of endless disappointments. Yvonne never listened to anything I said, so I decided not to say anything more.…I slept for ten hours straight on the first day after the wedding was canceled. I woke up to the sunlight shining on the foot of the bed.Mom sat beside me, peeling an apple for me. She didn't ask why I had suddenly come home. She didn't ask why the wedding was called off, either. She sim
