Chapter 4

Author: Bagel
I froze, pushing him away almost instinctively.

This would ruin my plan. If he stayed here watching me, how would I find a chance to escape?

Ryker caught my subtle hesitation at once.

His eyes darkened. "Elara," he said, his voice laced with an uncertain, probing tone, "you… you don't want me to stay with you?"

I threw my arms around his waist and stood on my toes, lightly nipping his jaw the way he often did to me. "Ryker, you're my mate. Of course I want to be with you for all eternity."

Hearing this, the wariness in his eyes melted away.

He closed his eyes and gave a helpless little laugh. His rough thumb brushed against my lower lip as he repeatedly warned me not to wander off.

Only then did he turn and leave, his mind seemingly at ease.

The moment his back disappeared beyond the treeline, I began to move the escape supplies I had prepared. There was the bundle of animal sinew he had used for the logs and some dried meat for sustenance.

And the small pinch of white powder.

This time, I had to succeed on the first try.

But just as I was dragging the fur-wrapped bundle toward the cave entrance—

"Elara, what are you doing?"

Ryker was already back, blocking the light at the entrance like a mountain.

He strode toward me, his face thunderous. "I told you not to wander off. Where do you think you're going with all this?"

His gaze was fixed on the bundle of supplies.

Without another word, he scooped me up from the ground, threw me over his shoulder, and carried me back into the cave.

Ryker tossed me onto the furs, his eyes blazing with a predatory red glow. His body pressed down on me. "You want to leave me?"

I shook my head, frantically pulling the waterskin from my clothes, my voice trembling.

"I was just packing supplies… I was afraid you'd get thirsty out there, so I wanted to bring you some nectar."

I deliberately pushed up my sleeve to reveal a fresh, bleeding cut on my finger, where a sharp rock had scraped it as I moved the bundle. Tears welled in my eyes and streamed down my face.

The sight of the blood made Ryker's breath catch, his composure shattering. He reached out and took my trembling hand, his brow furrowed as he leaned down to gently kiss the blood away. "Did you get hurt?"

The bloodred glow in his eyes faded, replaced by that familiar, false concern.

I held the waterskin to his lips. He tilted his head back and, in one long drink, swallowed the entire contents, which were laced with the high-potency sleeping powder.

A few seconds later, the drug took effect. His body swayed violently, and a shattered, nearly voiceless, "Elara…" escaped his lips.

I slapped his hand away and bolted from the cave without a second glance.

Fighting through the tearing pain in my leg, I followed my planned route, sprinting toward the river of death at the border.

That small amount of powder wouldn't last long. I had to jump before his wolf burned through its effects.

Not long after, Ryker jolted awake in the cave.

When he realized I was gone, he stared in disbelief.

Then, a panic he had never known threatened to shatter his sanity. He frantically searched for my scent, knocking over piles of furs and smoking racks.

Following the messy footprints, he was forced to accept the truth: I had run away.

He snatched the communication crystal, his knuckles turning white. "Elara is gone! Activate the bloodline tracking totem and find her, now!"

Just as his vision swam with red, a group of heavily armed pack warriors in armored vehicles descended upon the cave, blocking his path.

Selena's men had arrived first.

Ryker's brow furrowed. "What are you doing here?"

"Alpha Ryker, Lady Selena has ordered us to evacuate you immediately," the lead warrior said, bowing his head.

"The elemental array at headquarters sent out an emergency alert a week ago. This blood moon storm is going to tear this whole place apart. We have to get you out of here now."

"Bullshit! The array in the cabin showed no warning!"

In the next instant, he remembered something.

I was a once-in-a-century Healer of the Nightbane pack. I understood elements, herbs, and every rune in an array better than anyone. I had erased the warning in the cabin.

I knew everything.

"Find Elara! Find her now!" Ryker roared.

The lead warrior grabbed his arm, holding him back. "Alpha Ryker, calm down! The storm is right on top of us! If we don't leave now, we'll all die in this forest!"

"Get off me! If Elara can't get out, I'll die here with her!" The sensory map on the wall finally flared with a brilliant red light, locking onto my position.

At that moment, I stood on the edge of a windswept cliff. The storm was upon me, the blood-red moonlight swallowed by shredded dark clouds.

Below me, the river of death churned with white foam, its roar devouring everything in its path.

"Elara, come back!" Ryker howled from the base of the cliff. His voice tore through the wind, ripping away the smooth, careless facade he had always maintained.

In the stretching silence, he stared up at me on the clifftop, his eyes filled with a raw desperation.

Without a backward glance, I stepped off the edge, letting the roaring abyss swallow me whole.

"Lady Elara, the results of the entrance trials for the thirty-seventh batch of apprentices are out!"A young apprentice ran into the herb garden, beaming and carrying a thick stack of parchment.I looked up from my records. "What's the pass rate?""Eighty percent! And twelve of the children earned perfect marks in herb identification!"A small smile touched my lips as I took the scrolls. It had been three months. From the day I pinned on the Chief Healer insignia, the Nightbane infirmary was completely transformed.I tore down the walls of the old infirmary and, on the most fertile stretch of land east of the pack grounds, built a grand Healer's Academy.Three hundred apprentices studied herbalism, toxicology, acupuncture, and surgery day and night. My books, the Encyclopedia of Herb Identification and Introduction to Toxicology, were copied thousands of times and distributed to every village in the North. Now, every household in Nightbane knew at least three life-saving herbs. The pl

Ryker's fingers gripped my medicine basket, his knuckles white with agony.Blackish-purple blood gushed from his wound, burning the muddy ground with a noxious white smoke.I watched him, calmly crouching down, my gaze sweeping over his festering wound.I crouched and lightly touched the wound on his chest, where black blood oozed.I dabbed a little on my fingertip and brought it to my nose."Three parts wolfsbane, two parts night-wolf root, one part bone-rot vine," I recited the formula softly.Ryker's pupils contracted."A formula I know well. As, I imagine, do you," I said with a cold smile. This was the same poison he had personally applied to my broken leg every day in the wilderness.I saw his lips tremble, but he couldn't form a word.I stood up and mercilessly pried his fingers from my basket, one by one."Elara... please..." he whimpered, not giving up.I slowly rose and dusted the blood from my hands."Ryker," my voice was quiet, but it chilled the air, "I am a Healer. I save

I withdrew the ladle. Alaric's face paled as he stiffly retreated.Just then, a shrill scream cut through the square."You're all being deceived by her!"I looked up to see a disheveled Selena charging out from the crowd. Her skirt was smeared with mud, her makeup was a smeared ruin, and her eyes were bloodshot."Don't drink it! It's poison! You'll die if you drink it!"She ran wildly to the center of the square and kicked over the cauldron of medicine at my feet. The pale gold antidote spilled across the ground."Elara is a fraud! She wants to poison the entire pack for revenge!" Selena pointed at me, screaming hysterically.A murmur of unease rippled through the crowd. Several of the afflicted, about to drink the medicine, hesitated.I put down the wooden ladle and looked her straight in the eye."Selena, are you certain you want to stand here and debate pharmacology with me?""Of course I'm certain!" she shrieked. "What's the formula for this medicine? Tell us! Do you dare?"I smile

"Master, they've carried out another dozen bodies from the pack grounds."The black wolf, now in his human form, knelt before me, his voice low.He was the only one among the rogue wolves old enough to manifest a half-human form. I had named him Kade.My hand, stirring a potion, paused."They say Selena has locked herself in the infirmary for three days. Every potion she brews is darker and more toxic than the last. The patients who drink it die moments later, bleeding from their eyes, nose, and mouth."Selena couldn't even tell the difference between poison and medicine. The thought of her healing anyone was absurd."What else?" I asked, stirring the potion. "What is Alaric's reaction?""Alpha Alaric is already questioning Lady Selena in the council hall." Kade looked up at me. "Also, Ryker smashed everything in the cabin. He's been starving himself for days, and his grief is causing his wolf soul to fester. Alaric's men had to drag him back for the meeting. He's a walking corpse."T

[Selena's POV]"Lady Selena! Three more have died! There are bodies piling up outside the infirmary!"A young maidservant scrambled into the inner hall, her voice shrill and piercing.Selena slammed down the pestle in her hand. "So they died! What are you screaming for!"She flipped impatiently through the thick manuscript Elara had written. She couldn't make sense of the dense symbols and formulas."My lady, Alpha Alaric is here..."Before she could finish, the door to the council hall was kicked open.Alaric stood there in full armor, his expression thunderous."Selena. Seventeen more of our people died today."He slammed a list of names down in front of her."Do you even know how to heal?"Selena rushed into his arms, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Alaric, don't blame me. The plague came on so suddenly. Even the witches are powerless. How could I possibly save everyone by myself?""Elara never failed," Alaric cut her off, his gaze sharp. "You have her manuscript. You have her

"Elara, no!"Ryker's roar was shredded by the raging wind.I gave him one last look. Those eyes, the ones that had deceived me with countless lies, now held a devastation I had never seen. But it was too late.My body was falling. The wind shrieked in my ears, and the blood-red moonlight receded into a frantic blur. From the top of the cliff, I heard a roar like the death cry of a beast."ELARA!!"The sound tore through the storm. But I didn't look back. The icy river water cut into my flesh like knives. The river's deadly undercurrent dragged me toward the bottom.I clenched my jaw, fumbling at my waist underwater. The sinew rope was still there. This time, my gamble had paid off.The other end of the sinew rope was tied to a buoyant, hollow log I had secretly wedged beneath a reef the night before. They were the same logs Ryker himself had treated for extra buoyancy.I clung to the rope, letting the fierce current sweep me downstream, my broken leg smashing against the rocks until it
