The Wrong Vow, My Perfect Match

Chapter 5: The Wife Under Surveillance

The car ride back to the mansion was quieter than before—but heavier.

Ama sat stiffly, her hands folded tightly in her lap, staring out the window as the city blurred past. But she wasn’t seeing the buildings. She was seeing Kofi’s face. The shock. The anger. The betrayal.

And Daniel’s words.

“I intend to find out.”

Her stomach tightened.

Beside her, Daniel remained calm as ever. Phone in hand. Expression unreadable. As if nothing unusual had happened at all.

As if her entire world hadn’t just cracked open in front of hundreds of people.

Ama stole a glance at him.

How can someone be so calm after something like that?

“Do you always bring your personal problems to work?” Daniel asked suddenly, still not looking at her.

Ama blinked. “What?”

“You hesitated,” he said. “With him.”

Her chest tightened instantly.

“He was my past,” she replied carefully.

Daniel finally looked at her.

That gaze again.

Sharp. Measuring.

“And now?” he asked.

Ama swallowed. “Now… I’m your wife.”

A pause.

Then Daniel looked away.

“Correct answer,” he said quietly.

Ama’s fingers clenched.

It didn’t sound like approval.

It sounded like evaluation.

When they arrived at the mansion, Daniel didn’t follow her inside immediately.

Instead, he stopped by the entrance and spoke to a guard.

“From today,” he said calmly, “she doesn’t leave the estate without permission.”

Ama froze.

“What?” she turned sharply.

Daniel finally faced her.

“Security measure,” he said simply.

Ama’s heart pounded. “Security for what? I’m not a criminal.”

His expression didn’t change.

“Everyone in this house is monitored,” he replied. “You’re no exception.”

Her breath caught.

“Monitored?”

Daniel stepped closer slightly, lowering his voice just enough for only her to hear.

“You’re my wife now, Ama. And I don’t like unknown variables in my life.”

Unknown variables.

Not a person.

Not a partner.

A variable.

Something to be controlled.

Ama felt a cold wave run through her.

Before she could respond, Daniel turned and walked inside.

Leaving her standing alone at the entrance.

That night, Ama couldn’t sleep.

The room felt different now. Smaller. Heavier. Like the walls themselves were listening.

She got up quietly and walked toward the window.

Outside, the mansion grounds were lit dimly. Guards stood at intervals. Cameras glinted in hidden corners.

She wasn’t imagining it.

She really was being watched.

Ama pressed her hand against the glass.

What kind of marriage is this?

A soft click behind her made her turn sharply.

Her breath stopped.

Daniel stood at the door.

Still in his suit. No expression.

“You’re awake,” he said.

Ama quickly stepped back. “I couldn’t sleep.”

He walked in slowly, his eyes scanning the room—not her body, but her surroundings. The windows. The door. The angles.

Always observing.

“You were walking around earlier,” he said.

Ama froze. “You’re spying on me?”

A pause.

Daniel tilted his head slightly.

“I prefer the word monitoring,” he corrected.

Her stomach dropped.

“That’s the same thing!”

“No,” he said calmly. “Spying is emotional. Monitoring is necessary.”

Ama stared at him, disbelief rising. “Necessary for what exactly?”

Daniel stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But close enough that she felt his presence fully.

“To understand you,” he said simply.

Her heartbeat quickened. “I didn’t ask to be understood.”

“That’s not how this works,” he replied.

Ama’s voice lowered. “Then how does it work?”

For the first time, something subtle flickered in his eyes.

Not emotion.

Curiosity.

“You stay here,” he said. “You follow the rules. And I learn everything about you.”

Ama’s throat tightened. “And if I don’t?”

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then answered quietly.

“Then I find out why you’re pretending to be someone else.”

The room went silent.

Ama’s blood turned cold.

Her hands trembled slightly, but she forced herself to stay still.

He doesn’t know.

He can’t know.

But the way he was looking at her now…

It wasn’t suspicion anymore.

It was certainty forming.

Daniel turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he paused.

“One more thing,” he said without looking back.

Ama held her breath.

“Don’t meet that man again.”

Kofi.

Ama’s chest tightened.

“And if I do?” she asked softly.

Daniel finally turned his head slightly.

A faint pause.

Then—

“Then I stop being patient.”

And with that, he left.

Ama stood alone again.

But this time, her fear had a name.

Not poverty.

Not her past.

Daniel Mensah.

Because she was beginning to realize something terrifying…

Her husband wasn’t just controlling her life.

He was slowly unraveling it.
