LOGINNo matter how mad and disappointed I was, I still needed food in my system, so when I went down during lunch time to get myself something to eat, I stumbled on my parents and Melinda talking at the dinner table, unaware that I stood behind them — or maybe they knew I was standing there and simply did not care enough to spare me their disgusting and useless words.
“Father, why did you ask sister to sign the contract? We could have explained to Luciano that I am engaged.”
Melinda’s voice was faint and innocent. Innocent as the devil could be, because the last word I would use to describe her was just that. How could they — a small and insignificant family that had gained some wealth only a couple of years ago — call and tell Luciano that they could not give their daughter to him?
As usual, everything she said and did just showed how low her brain actually worked.
“Darling, you do not call Luciano to explain things to him. Plus, I already paid her enough money to last her a lifetime, so don’t worry about her,” my father said as if he found her stupidity adorable.
Men and their ego.
“Did sister ask for money? How could she do that? She is also a part of this family — if I had not been engaged to Adrian, I would have sacrificed myself for this family.” A loud gasp escaped her as she covered her mouth with her hands, as if she had said something that could ruin the world.
“I did not mean to say sister only cares about money and not us, Father. I am sure she had her own reasonings.”
Oh, please spare me the acting. That is exactly what you meant.
Before my father could say anything, I entered the kitchen in my pajamas, not bothering to greet them as I walked into the kitchen. So what if I loved money? Money had given me a reason to love it — what had they given me other than disgust?
“Marta, what did you cook today? I am so hungry!” I said with a loud and excited voice as I entered the kitchen, embracing the old woman who was standing above the stove.
Marta had been our cook since I could remember. She was also the only person in this house who never ignored my existence the moment Melinda came into the picture. She would bake her cookies, make her favorite food, and talk with her all night long. She was the closest thing I had to a mother.
“I made you your favorite tomato soup and garlic bread. Sit down and eat,” Marta said as she pulled out a chair for me to sit and eat the food she had already prepared on the kitchen table.
“Marta, can I marry you? I promise to treat you better than Uncle Will.” The old woman slapped my head lightly as she let out a hearty laugh.
Uncle Will was the family driver and Marta’s husband. I had spent most of my time with the two of them — so much so that they considered me their firstborn daughter. They had a five‑year‑old son that I adored, and who had grown so attached to me that he would cry after me every single time I spent time with him.
“Don’t let your uncle hear you say those words. He might chase you with a pan again.”
Marta pointed a finger at my nose before she slightly poked it with a warm touch that spread warmth across my cold and detached heart.
“Are you flirting with my wife again, you little troublemaker?”
A man’s voice entered my ears as I turned my gaze toward the kitchen entrance. Uncle Will stood there with his tall body leaned against the door, his gentle eyes staring at her with a small glint of jealousy.
“No, Marta was the one who flirted with me!” I said as I pointed my finger accusingly at the woman standing once again by the stove, preparing food for her husband this time.
Uncle Will shook his head, ignoring my accusation as he planted a kiss on Marta’s forehead with a gentle “thank you” before he took his food and sat across from her at the kitchen table.
I thought once again about the contract I had signed. Once the money hit my account, I would have to meet Luciano and prepare for the wedding. I doubted I would have much say in the wedding — he had asked for Melinda, so the wedding would be done in a way she would marvel at. This whole thing did not have a shred of my personality in it. From the dress to the wedding — everything was hers.
These people were my family. Maybe not blood‑related family, but they were family to me.
I would not leave them behind. I refused to give up the little warmth this world had granted me. Fate has never been on my side; everything I possessed and earned, I have had to fight to the end to get it.
Except them. Fate gave them to me to compensate for everything he had stripped from me.
“Uncle Will, if I decide to leave this place and get married, would you guys go with me?” The words had left my mouth before I could stop them.
My words sent a heavy tension into the air, causing both of them to stop what they were doing and turn their gazes toward me. Uncle Will’s gentle gaze met mine as a soft smile spread across his face.
“Of course we would, as long as you don’t dislike us, troublemaker.”
Marta nodded as she placed a hand on her heart, wiping away the tears in her eyes. They had heard about the contract, I thought to myself, pushing away the tears that formed in my own eyes.
I would be fine. I have always been and will always be fine as long as I am alive and well.
Luciano's povI cursed under my breath as I grabbed my car keys in the closet before I hurried down the stairs, not bothering to hang up on the panicked bodyguard on the other side of the phone. A bodyguard who had left my brother alone to make a deal with someone he was not supposed to make a deal with. Now I understood why he had come up with a stupid excuse of oversleeping instead of signing the contract with Rivera. Right now I was beyond agitated and frustrated — I was mad, raging even. My younger brother was not a very careful person; heck, he never thought about what he did and the consequences it could lead to. And this one might cost him his life.I entered the kitchen to see Valentina and Marta standing above the stove, talking about something I could not make out or hear, but that was the least of my problems right now.“I have to head out for something quick, I’ll be back later,” I said, waiting for her to turn fully and give me a shocked but gentle nod before I rushed out
Luciano's Pov“I do not care how or what you do, get it done, Allen,” I screamed at my idiot of a younger brother through the phone as I cut the call and slammed it onto the table with frustration. This is why I like to do my own shit. The moment I allow anyone to do anything for me, they give me a headache that wouldn’t exist if I had just done it myself. In this case, my younger brother had overslept on the day he was supposed to sign a contract with one of our biggest clients. How he managed to actually forget something of that importance was beyond me.I let out a sigh and ran a hand over my face as annoyance bubbled in my body. The adrenaline needed to be vented out or else I would beat the fuck out of my younger brother the moment I saw him. I stood up from my chair and made my way towards my bedroom to change from my comfortable clothes to a pair of gym clothes before I started my workout. As soon as I opened the door to my room, I was greeted by Valentina standing in the middl
It was safe to say that she was not very happy with my choice, but I could not care any less about her happiness. As a coach she was shitty — never once did she care about our health and wellbeing. If she could get paid for our misery, then I was allowed to compete in whichever category I wanted to. Either way she was going to make my life harder; I might as well do it with someone I enjoy being around. “You do realize she is going to be up your ass for this, right?” Selin said as she held my leg, stretching it as far up as she could until my muscles protested in pain. I tapped her shoulder before I pulled my hamstring back. “I could not give any less shit about her opinions right now. Either way she was not going to make these coming three months easier.” We switched positions as she stood and balanced herself on one leg, holding my shoulder as I now stretched her left leg as high as I possibly could before I felt her tapping my shoulder. “Let’s not talk about her. Tell me about yo
“I love him,” Luca said as he pointed towards his jersey, the one Uncle Will had bought for him as his fifth birthday gift. “He is so good. I want to be like him when I grow up,” he said proudly, puffing his chest like a proud mother. His love for football had worried Marta, but she quickly realized she would rather have him obsessed with this stupid sport than hooked on video games and YouTube. I personally did not know why it would be a problem for him to watch a sport — after all, everyone had a passion for something — but it wasn’t until I saw him ugly‑cry about his team losing that I understood Marta’s hardship. He got grumpy and rather distant when his team lost. I mean, how devastating could it be for a couple of men running after a ball to lose a game? My question was always answered with sarcasm and Luca’s burning eyes.“Personally, I think Turan is better than him,” Luciano said as he crossed his arms over his chest. This man really knew how to get into people’s heads, becau
I did not know how or when I fell asleep, but I woke up on the bed the next day, my blanket tightly wrapped around me as I had fallen asleep in my training clothes. That was gross, especially now when I thought about the amount of sweat these clothes had soaked up during my long training hours.I slid off the bed and hurried towards the bathroom, pushing aside the thought that kept running in my head. Did I get a pimple on my back? That would be a nightmare, especially now when I would be in backless training clothes. I would hate it if my back was adorned with a big red pimple. After my hot shower, I stood in front of the mirror, turning my neck to the best of my ability, trying to see if I had any pimples on my back. After what felt like an hour of inspecting myself, I happily came out of the shower and ran to the closet. The room was cold even if the weather outside seemed quite sunny; I still felt cold for some reason.I put on a simple black set of training clothes and started ma
I opened my closet and put on my training set once again. The white set of training shorts and sports bra shaped my curvy body perfectly, yet the more I looked at myself in the mirror, the more I thought about her words.Elephant — that had been the animal she compared me to. I had fought tooth and nail for this body, yet all it took for me to despise it was one word from a woman whose cruelty I had witnessed firsthand. A woman I knew very well not to listen to, but the disgusted feeling that rose in my heart was so bitter and so strong that I couldn’t fight it. Maybe she was right.Losing ten kilograms would not kill me. I needed to skate faster and jump higher now more than any other time. I nodded my head with a smile, patting myself on the back for not thinking about the matter any further.I had indeed underestimated how addicting and inviting the journey would be once it started. I had forgotten how innocently it had begun from the very beginning, and I — as stupid as I was — ha
