Lucian's pov

Something was wrong.

I felt it in my chest before I saw it. A cold spike of fear that had nothing to do with the curse and everything to do with her. Cressida had been in the dressing room for too long. The play was over and the applause had faded and the actors had dispersed but she had not come out.

Raven was talking to me and her voice was bright and her eyes were happy.

"She was amazing," she said. "Did you see her? She was absolutely brilliant."

"She was brilliant," I agreed.

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Justice She Deserved

Lucian's povWe walked through the corridors and the torches flickered and the tapestries moved and the wolves stepped aside. My hand was in hers and her fingers were cold and her grip was tight. I could feel her tension and her fear and her anger. She was trying to be brave and she was trying to be strong and she was trying to hold herself together. But I could see the cracks. I could see the way her shoulders were tense and her jaw was tight and her eyes were bright. The council chamber was cold and the walls were stone and the table was heavy. The elders were seated at the head of the table and their faces were stern and their eyes were sharp. Elder Marlow sat in the center with her gray hair coiled tight and her fingers steepled beneath her chin. Elder Thorn was on her left with his broad face carved from stone. Elder Whitmore was on her right and his spectacles were perched on his nose and his eyes were unreadable.Elder Marlow looked at Cressida and her voice was steady. "Cressi

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    Wrongfully accused

Cressida's pov The dining hall was loud and the candles were bright and the air was thick with tension.I sat at our usual table with Raven beside me and Benita across from me and Tasha leaning against the wall with her silver braids loose and her arms crossed. The food was warm and the bread was fresh and the meat was tender. But my stomach was tight and my hands were shaking and I could not eat.The wolves around us were whispering and their voices were low and their eyes were sharp. I could feel them watching me and their stares were heavy and their judgment was clear. I was the outsider. I was the reason the hunters were here. I was the reason everything was falling apart."You need to eat," Raven said."I am not hungry.""You need to eat anyway.""I cannot."She pushed a plate toward me and her dark eyes were steady. "Try."I picked up my fork and stabbed a piece of meat and brought it to my mouth. The taste was good but my throat was tight and I had to force myself to swallow.

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    Taking the fear away

Cressida's pov The fire was crackling and the candles were flickering and the room was warm and quiet.I sat on the edge of the bed with my knees pulled to my chest and my arms wrapped around myself. The day had been long and the night was longer and my mind was still racing. The witch's words echoed in my skull and they would not stop. The hunters were coming and the war was coming and I was the reason. The weight of it pressed down on my shoulders and I could not shake it loose.I pressed my hands to my face and tried to breathe. The door opened and Lucian walked in. His face was tired and his eyes were dark and his shirt was untucked and his hair was messy. He had been pacing the corridors for hours and I could see the exhaustion in the lines around his eyes. He crossed the room and sat beside me and his shoulder pressed against mine. His warmth seeped through my clothes and his presence eased some of the tightness in my chest."You should be sleeping," he said."I cannot sleep."

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Hunters at the Gate

Cressida's pov The snow was falling and the wind was howling and the world was white and cold.I stood at the window of Lucian's quarters and watched the darkness swallow the frozen gardens. The torches flickered and the shadows danced and the snow piled up against the glass. Ember was curled at my feet and her purr was soft and steady and her warmth seeped through my boots.I had not slept in days.Every time I closed my eyes I saw the flames. Every time I breathed I smelled the smoke. Every time I heard a sound I thought it was them. The hunters. The ones who had been watching. The ones who had been waiting. The ones who would not stop until I was dead or worse. The door opened and Lucian walked in.His face was tired and his eyes were dark and his shirt was rumpled. He crossed the room and stood behind me and his hands found my shoulders."You should be sleeping," he said."I cannot sleep.""You have not slept in days.""I know."He turned me around and looked at my face and his w

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Storm That Would Not Break

Lucian's pov The night was cold and the wind was howling and the walls of my quarters were too close.I stood at the window and watched the snow fall and the darkness deepen and the world disappear beneath a blanket of white. My hands were shaking and my chest was tight and my mind was racing. The witch's words echoed in my skull and they would not stop. She is in danger. More danger than you know. There are people who have been watching her since the day she arrived.People who know what she is.People who know what she came here to do.They are not going to stop until she is either with them or dead.I pressed my palm to the cold glass and my breath fogged the surface and the snow fell and the wind howled.Cressida was asleep in the bed behind me and her dark hair was spread across the pillow and her face was peaceful and her breathing was steady. She looked like an angel. She looked like she had never known fear or pain or loss. She looked like she belonged in a world that would n

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Name She Knew

Lucian's pov The cells were cold and the air was thick and the torches flickered on the stone walls.I walked down the narrow corridor and my boots echoed on the stone and the guards stepped aside. The witch was in the last cell, the one with the iron bars and the heavy lock and the shadows that seemed to cling to the corners. She was sitting on the floor with her back against the wall and her black eyes fixed on the door. She looked up when I stopped in front of her cell and her smile was sharp and cold."Alpha," she said. "I was wondering when you would come.""You knew I would come.""I knew."I crossed my arms and my voice was steady. "Who sent you?""No one.""You are lying.""I am not.""Then why are you here?""I am here for the same reason you are here. For the same reason the girl is here."I went still and my blood went cold. "What girl?"She laughed and the sound echoed off the walls. "Do not pretend, Alpha. I know who she is. I know what she is. I know why she came to thi

Lucian's pov I was halfway to her door when Tasha stepped into my path. She came out of nowhere and her silver braids were loose and her arms were crossed and her eyes were sharp. She did not move when I tried to step around her. She did not flinch when I glared."Move," I said."No.""I am not in

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    Different thoughts on things

Cressida's povMaster Theron was droning on about the Great Purge and his voice was like gravel rolling down a hill and my eyes were heavy and my head was foggy.
