“Did she find out?”. Maya Thought on her way home, maybe it is about work or he is planning a surprise.

Ciara was in the sitting room pressing her phone,The second she saw Maya she flipped the phone face down.

Maya sat across from her. "Tell me everything."

"He is completely obsessed with me." Ciara wrapped both hands around her mug. "He texted this morning already."

"Already? What did he say?"

Ciara's smile broke through,"That last night was perfect…"

Maya reached across the table and grabbed her hand, "Ciara. I'm so happy for you."

Ciara looked down at their joined hands, Something moved through her expression, quick and flat and gone before Maya could name it and then the smile covered it back up like it had never been there.

Maya looked at the bracelet. “Birthday gift, That is all”.

"How's Damien?"

"Good, He had an early morning."

"He always has an early morning..." Ciara picked up her mug”.

Maya pulled her hand back slowly, "Is there something specific you're not telling me?"

Ciara looked at her, "Just a feeling."

A feeling? Ciara had feelings about the neighbor's dog, About the color of the new curtains, About every man Maya had dated since she was nineteen, She was protective, that was the whole of it, That was all this was.

**********

Victoria had set the table properly with Candles, good plates, flowers in the center that Maya hadn't seen come in. Maya sat down and looked around and thought it was just a regular dinner, just Victoria being Victoria, wanting everything nice right up until Damien put his fork down halfway through the main course and stood up.

He didn't make a speech, he just looked at her.

"I don't want to wait anymore, I know what I want."

He put the ring on the table in front of her.

"Will you marry me."

Maya stared at it, She looked at him, looked at Victoria , both hands pressed over her mouth, eyes bright and full. She looked at Ciara, on her feet already, clapping, beaming, the warmest smile Maya had ever seen on her face.

"Yes." “Maya said”.

The room came apart and Damien slid the ring onto her finger and pulled her up and held her, and over his shoulder Maya found Ciara's eyes. Ciara was still smiling wide and warm and completely convincing.

Maya smiled back.

She pressed her face into Damien's shoulder “I think I'm going to be okay.” Maya thought.

Damien left at nine then The house went quiet room by room.

Maya went to brush her teeth and Ciara went to her room. Sitting on the edge of her bed, She picked up her phone, She dialed and waited two rings.

"It worked…" Her voice was low, even and unhurried. "She said yes...". "Exactly as planned…. " and "She has no idea, let's Just make sure the timeline hold."

She hung up and looked at herself in the mirror on the back of her door for a long time.

Her expression did not look like someone who had just watched her sister get engaged.

**********

In the days that followed, Maya started noticing the fog.

Not every morning, Just some of them, a thickness in her thoughts, a half-second delay between wanting a word and finding it. She mentioned it once at breakfast.

"I feel like I can't think straight lately, Like everything's just slow."

Victoria Came and put a fresh cup of tea in front of her.

"You've been under so much stress, baby. The engagement, the planning; Your body's just catching up."

"I keep forgetting things."

"You've always been a little scattered." Victoria patted her shoulder. "Just like your mother."

“My mother” This conversation has nothing to do with my mother… why does she have to bring my mom up. “Maya thought”.

Maya wrapped both hands around the mug and drank.

*********

She was at Damien's apartment three days later, the wedding guest list spread across the coffee table between them, when his phone rang.

He looked at the screen, Let it ring out.

It rang again, He declined it.

The third time it rang, Maya looked up.

"Just answer it, Damien. They clearly need something." Maya stretch her hands to pick the phone.

"Get your hands off my privacy!" Damien roared, snatching the phone away with an ugly rage that shook the walls.

Then he blinked, seeing her terrified face, and the anger instantly faded as he whispered, "Maya... God, I'm so sorry.”

Damien stood up. "I'm going to grab us some more coffee," he murmured, rubbing the back of his neck as he walked into the kitchen.

The moment his footsteps faded, Maya’s eyes glued themselves right back to where that phone was, feeling stupid even looking at it. But if it really was just some annoying coworker calling about a shift, why completely shut the thing down?

Why push it away like it was a ticking bomb about to ruin their afternoon.

“Is he hiding something?” The thought finally formed clearly in the fog.

Maya felt entirely emptied out. Without a word, she walked away from the table, crawled into the quiet safety of the bedroom, and pulled the blankets up to her chin. She closed her eyes, letting the darkness swallow the questions she wasn't ready to answer.

********

He walked through the boutique door and across the room Damien's shoulders went tight.

‘whoever that is, Damien was not expecting him.” Maya thought.

She was standing on the fitting platform in the third dress of the afternoon ivory, fitted through the waist, the kind of dress Irene had been crying happy tears at since the first one and she watched Damien's smile stay perfectly in place while something behind it went away entirely.

He crossed the room like the floor beneath him belonged to him in his late fifties and his shoes echoing loudly on the ground. When Damien lifted his eyes, they widened in shock.

Maya looked at him, confused. "Is there a problem?"

His mouth was still hanging open as she traced his eyes to ELIAS.

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE    I BURIED THAT FACE THIRTY YEARS AGO

The room froze.Marcus never took his eyes off the computer screen. His breathing had become shallow. “I buried that face thirty years ago,” he whispered.Maya frowned. “What do you mean… buried?”Marcus shook his head. “I didn’t bury a body.” He swallowed. “I buried an identity.”Felix enlarged the image. It was an old intake photograph. A little boy. About three years old. Dark hair. Serious eyes. Around his neck hung a small metal tag with one number engraved on it. 47. The file contained no name. No birth date. No parents. Only: SUBJECT 47. STATUS: REASSIGNED. ACCESS RESTRICTED.Marcus remembered. Thirty years earlier, Roland had asked him to witness the sealing of several Ashgrove legal files. Marcus had assumed they were routine adoption records. Instead, he had found one file with no child’s name. Only a number. Forty-Seven. When he questioned it, the official processing the documents simply smiled. “Names create attachments.” “Numbers are easier.” Marcus had never forgotten th

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE     THE CHILD WHO NEVER EXISTED

Nobody spoke for several seconds. The silence wasn't empty. It was the kind of silence that followed a truth too large to understand all at once.Maya looked around the room.Marcus stood with both hands resting on the table, staring at the documents as though he expected them to change if he looked long enough.Felix had already reached for his laptop, his fingers hovering above the keyboard without pressing a single key.Cass folded her arms tightly across her chest, her expression caught somewhere between disbelief and dread.Elias watched everyone instead of the documents. He had learned long ago that people's reactions often revealed as much as the evidence itself. No one wanted to be the first to say what all of them were beginning to suspect.Because once the words were spoken...There would be no pretending this was only another inconsistency in old records. Marcus was the first to move. He asked Felix to enlarge the obituary and the government replacement authorization side by s

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE    CHAPTER 48: There was no family signature

After Nadia’s call. Everyone met at the newspaper’s historical archive. The obituary ledger had survived because the newspaper kept meticulous business records. An elderly archivist brought out a leather-bound register. “This is where every paid death notice was recorded.” The obituary was there. Same publication date. Same wording, Same page number. But one detail froze everyone. Under “Relationship to Deceased,” the space was blank. There was no mother, No father, No guardian, No family representative. The payment record. The archivist turned another page. Every obituary normally included: Name of the person paying. Address, Receipt number. This one didn’t. Instead, it simply said: “Corporate Account.” Everyone went silent. Marcus frowned. “I’ve never seen that before.” Maya quietly said, “A child died… and the newspaper accepted payment from a corporate account instead of a grieving family.” She looked around. “This wasn’t mourning. This was administration.” Felix asked to se

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE    CHAPTER 47: THREE DAYS TOO EARLY

Nobody spoke.Marcus slowly took the newspaper back. He read the date again. Then the court authorization. Then the newspaper. Same conclusion. Three days. The room suddenly felt smaller. The air conditioner hummed softly overhead, but no one moved.Marcus adjusted his glasses with unsteady fingers.Felix stopped typing.Even Nadia, who usually filled silence with another question, simply stared at the paper.Maya could hear the faint scratch of the newspaper between Marcus’s hands.Three days. Not three hours. Not a rushed correction printed in the next edition.Three entire days before a judge signed the order that officially replaced one child with another. The difference was no longer a clerical error. It was anticipation.Maya walked to the whiteboard. She wrote: Child disappears.Newspaper publishes obituary.Three days later... Court approves replacement. She circled the dates. “They already knew.”She stepped back from the board.“Think about the sequence,” she said.“If a chi

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE    CHAPTER 46: HE WAS NOT MEANT TO SURVIVE

Marcus, Cass, Felix, Maya, and Elias studied it. The federal forensic team had spent all night restoring faded pages. One page had finally become readable. Felix placed the restored copy in front of everyone. “It wasn’t erased. It was chemically washed.” Silence. Someone deliberately destroyed only one child’s history. Not the entire ledger. Only one. The forensic enhancement revealed several words. Not the entire page. Only fragments. Everyone leaned closer. They read: Child Number 27. Male. Approximately three years old. Found… Transferred under emergency directive… Guardian Authorization… Patient Zero… The last two words froze everyone. Patient Zero. Marcus spoke. “I’ve seen that phrase before.” Everyone looked at him. “It wasn’t used in orphanages. It was used in government medical files.” Cass immediately understood. “Ashgrove wasn’t simply housing abandoned children. Some children were being observed. Not experimented on. Observed. Someone wanted specific children. Children

  • The wrong vow: I MARRIED MY EX'S SUPPOSED UNCLE    CHAPTER 45: THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T HERS

Everyone remained around the restored Ashgrove ledger. Felix enlarged the page using forensic imaging. Federal document specialists compared it with dozens of verified signatures. Marcus provided old legal documents. Cass provided Eleanor’s handwritten notes. The result was immediate. The initials were not Eleanor Hartwell’s handwriting. Someone copied her writing style… poorly. The signature was planted. Maya studied the page instead of the signature. She noticed something else. Only one page in the entire ledger contained forged initials. Why forge one page? Why not all of them? Someone wanted investigators to find that page. It wasn’t meant to survive by accident. It was meant to misdirect. Felix reconstructed the timeline. Thirty-one years ago: Adoption records disappear. Child identities are rewritten. Helen begins asking questions. Marcus seals documents. Eleanor starts keeping private notes. Gerald Finch becomes more active. One thing didn’t fit. Someone altered the Ashgrove l

She opened the letter at two in the morning and her mother's handwriting stopped her before she finished the first line. Not the words yet. Just the sight of it, the specific slant, the deliberate spacing, the way Helen had always written like she was making a record rather than sending a message.

"Deal," Maya said. She said it the way you say a thing when you have already decided and are just waiting for your mouth to catch up. Elias did not smile. He did not exhale with relief. He nodded once, the way someone nods when a number comes in where they expected it, and then he took out his ph

"You look beautiful," Victoria said, pressing both hands to Maya's face. "He is going to lose his mind when he sees you." Maya blushed. "I hope so. I really hope so."The stylist was still working. Ciara came up behind her and hugged her from the mirror's reflection."You look absolutely stunning

"She Would Have Hated This". "Don't cry," Damien said, rubbing her back in slow circles. "She would hate seeing you cry." Maya looked at him and thought, he's right, She would. Maya let herself weep the way she only ever wept , where no one expected her to stop. It has been seven years sinc
