Chapter 2

作者: Meow Two
Twelve days went by in a blink.

Twenty hours a day of brutal training had worn the three new hires down to nothing.

The dark circles under Leo's eyes were practically down to his chin. He yawned nonstop, and his hands shook so badly he could barely do the drills.

After he failed the troubleshooting simulation three times in a row and I chewed him out for it, he called Kevin.

Kevin came stalking over with a face like a storm cloud, Nora right behind him, and handed me a [Humane Management Notice].

"Ethan, the training's too intense. The new hires can't take it."

Nora put on her best manager act, nothing like the timid receptionist she used to be.

"Starting today, class ends at ten. They get two more hours of rest a day. If your teaching is behind schedule, you should look at yourself for the reason. Don't dump the pressure on other people just because you're not up to the job."

Kevin chimed in.

"Ethan, drop whatever you're scheming and lose the attitude. If you push one of these guys until he cracks, that's on you, and you won't be able to answer for it."

My calibration pen never stopped moving.

"Kevin, they're not the only ones grinding. I am too. A year's worth of training, and the company gave me one month. Cranking up the intensity was my only option."

I looked up at him.

"Besides, the agreement's in black and white, confirmed and signed by you. If something really does go wrong, well, that's what you're for, isn't it?"

"So you're saying it falls on me?"

Kevin slammed his hand down on the console.

"Ethan, quit trying to pin things on me!"

"Sure."

I set down my pen and pulled out the agreement.

"Kevin, if you think I'm wrong, we can take this contract straight to the President's office and let Mr. Preston decide who bears the liability."

Kevin froze instantly. He clearly knew blowing this whole thing up would backfire on him badly.

Nora clamped her mouth shut too, shooting me a venomous glare but saying nothing.

After a few minutes of deadlock, Kevin left me with one last line.

"You'll pay for this!"

He stormed off with a dark look on his face.

Before Kevin could get his revenge, disaster struck first.

That evening, I headed to the warehouse to pick up calibration fittings.

I'd only been gone three minutes when the factory alarm blared.

By the time I rushed back, Leo stood rigid at the control console, his face ashen.

He avoided my gaze, yet he still dug in his heels.

"I did everything exactly the way you taught me. You're the one who taught it wrong!"

Bright red fault codes blazed across the screen, and half the production line had ground to a halt.

Ten minutes later, Kevin showed up after hearing the news. He listened to Leo's side of it and nothing else, then dumped all the blame on me.

"Ethan, after more than ten days of training, how can they still botch basic operations? Is this the standard of your mentorship?"

Nora grabbed Kevin's arm and held him back before he could explode.

"Ethan, what are you standing around for? Before Kevin files a formal report and this blows up, fix the machine right now. You know what will happen if production stalls."

I perked up the second I heard he hadn't submitted the report yet.

I turned and pulled up footage from the action camera I'd tucked in the corner of the equipment bay.

The video showed me warning Leo and the others three separate times before I left not to touch the machinery without supervision. He'd nodded in agreement, then immediately messed with the controls behind my back, muttering the whole time.

"Ethan, you bastard! I'll stir up some real trouble for you right now. Just watch how Kevin deals with you!"

Kevin quickly changed the subject.

"Who answers for this is my call. Nobody asked you! Your one job right now is to get that equipment fixed!"

I shook my head, calm as ever.

"Kevin, have you forgotten you reassigned me to the training track? My official duty right now is mentorship. You'd better find someone else to fix this."

Just then, Mr. Preston rushed over after receiving the factory's incident report.

Once he heard the full story, he pointed straight at Kevin and ranted at him nonstop for ten minutes.

"You buried a major incident and can't even manage your own men. What good are you?! Sort this mess out today, or pack up your things and get out!"

Crushed by the dressing-down, Kevin had no choice but to soften his tone.

"Ethan, go fix the machine right now, and I'll log overtime pay for you."

I smiled faintly and held up two fingers.

"This isn't simple overtime. Work outside my formal job scope gets charged at the market freelance rate, twenty thousand."

Kevin opened his mouth to shout, but Nora held him back with a death grip.

A dozen seconds later, he gritted his teeth in fury and pulled out his phone.

"The money's transferred. Get over there and fix the machine this instant!"

As I turned to leave, I caught him muttering to Nora:

"Ungrateful brat! I'd like to see how long he can keep this up."

I broke into a grin.

We'd find out soon who would crack first.

Everything after that fell into place on its own.Kevin was sentenced to a year in prison for leaking trade secrets and ordered to compensate the company for its losses. His career was finished for good.Mr. Preston, for management failure and involvement in illegal dealings, was pushed out of the company by the other shareholders and blacklisted from the industry entirely.Fortunately, I'd cashed out every last one of my stock options the day after Mr. Preston was hauled off.As for the company, leaderless, with the billion-dollar deal dead, its core technology leaked, and its major clients walking away one after another, its cash flow collapsed fast.It held on less than six months before declaring bankruptcy and liquidating. That high-end production line they'd spent a fortune bringing in was, in the end, dismantled and auctioned off cheap to cover debts. As for Nora, word of her being a deliberate homewrecker juggling multiple men spread through the industry like wildfire. Once I was ready, I went back to the company.Mr. Preston was waiting in the conference room with several executives, every one of them grim-faced."Ethan, it's not too late to admit your mistake."He rapped on the table, laying down an ultimatum."Just come back and help recover the losses, and I'll let the leak go. I'll even give you a raise and a promotion."I pulled up a chair and sat down. "Mr. Preston, have you forgotten? I'm not your employee anymore. I'm one of your shareholders. I'm not here to be lectured today."With that, I connected my tablet to the room's projector. The next second, up on the screen came the leak-tracing path I'd put together. The shareholders and executives looked lost, so I spelled it out."I've already confirmed through the digital watermark that the leaked file is the exact one Nora and Kevin stole from me. As for where it leaked from..."I pointed at the IP on the screen. "It was from inside your own company."The shareholders broke into a clamor."Y

Mr. Preston's smile froze solid."Ethan, don't push your luck!" He forced his fury down, a threat in his voice. "You cash in your options and then try to run? There's no way I'm letting that happen!""Don't think you can throw your weight around just because Meridian took a shine to you. Don't forget you've got a non-compete. Defect to Meridian and the company will sue you into the ground, and you'll never work in this field again!"I laughed scornfully."These options were a full year of hard training, traded for an OEM certification. They're not the company's charity."I paused. "And besides, who told you I was going to Meridian?"Mr. Preston's eyes went round as saucers."Even if it's not Meridian, no other company in this field will touch you either! And who besides Meridian and us could give you a package this good?!"I simply pulled the resignation letter I'd prepared in advance out of my bag."Relax, I'll honor the non-compete to the letter. I'm not like you people. I at least h

"Mr. Preston, your company has certainly opened my eyes!"He swept a cold glance over Kevin and Nora. "The deal is off."With that, he turned and led his team toward the door.At the doorway he came back, and handed me a business card."If you ever feel like switching jobs, Meridian's door is always open. Salary and options, no question. And we honor them the day you start."I took the card. "That's very generous of you, Mr. Lawson. I'll give it serious thought."Once the team was gone, the mood in the factory dropped to freezing.Mr. Preston stood where he was, chest heaving, glaring daggers at Kevin and Nora."You useless piece of trash!"He whipped his hand up and slapped Kevin across the face."Some cheap, penny-ante scheme of yours, and the company just lost hundreds of millions!"Kevin cupped his cheek, unable to even straighten up."Mr. Preston, I... I was only following your instructions...""Shut up!"Mr. Preston was shaking with rage, and cut Kevin off."When did I ever tell

Meridian's chief engineer knotted his brow and pointed at the screen."Kevin, what fault is this? What caused it? How long until it's back up?"Sweat was already beading on Kevin's forehead. His fingers stabbed frantically at the keyboard while he stammered, "This... this is a routine safety trip. Just restart it and it'll be fine..."But he hammered away for ages, and not only did the equipment refuse to restart, the fault codes kept multiplying.Mr. Lawson's expression changed too."Kevin, didn't you say you led the team that built this thing? You can't even manage a restart?"Watching Kevin fail to string a sentence together, Mr. Preston turned to me at the back of the crowd."Ethan, get over here and handle this, now!"I picked up my water cup, took a sip, and only then made my way forward, taking my time.I crossed through a wall of stunned looks, stepped up to the console, and didn't touch a thing. Instead I looked at Mr. Preston and spoke calmly, right in front of the client."M

I didn't bother with him. I went straight back to my quarters. The moment I opened my laptop, an alert popped up.It was a monitoring backdoor I'd planted on the device ahead of time, just to be safe.[Document copied. Count: 1]I checked the time. It was exactly when I'd been up in Mr. Preston's office. What got copied was the core production-line documentation I'd compiled during the training period: the full calibration logic and the low-level troubleshooting procedures. But the document didn't contain the most critical thing: the underlying setup parameters. All my passwords were the same: the date Nora and I had started dating. I knew she would help Kevin come after me.They'd been targeting me long enough. Now it was my turn to hit back.An hour later, when I got to the factory, Kevin was cheerfully welcoming Meridian's executives, brazenly calling himself the head of the production line, in charge of the demo and the walkthrough. And in his hand, right then, were the technical d
