Valentino's heart raced inexplicably, each thump like a hammer to his ribcages. He frowned, confused.

He'd only had one drink, he thought, as he sat upright on the bed. His hand moved to his chest, thumb caressing the left side.

He sighed, thinking of the physically demanding tasks at work he'd taken care of earlier.

He'd have to call Celyn to check up on him.

Just as he was about lying down, his wrist started to burn, the feeling like a hot iron rod pressed against his skin.

He shot upright once again, surprise crossing his features, but, as quickly as it did, it faded.

Valentino's expression darkened.

He knew what it meant. All too well.

His eyes snapped his wrist, widening at the sight.

A bright red string was wrapped around it, stretching from him and through the door.

A scream reached his ears, followed by moans and whimpers. He looked up, hand moving over his wrist.

His mate.

They were on the other side of the door.

He rose to his feet and walked up to the door, reaching for the handle. It felt cold in his hand as he stilled.

His mate was on the other side.

Valentino had always thought he'd never find them.

And he was satisfied with that.

Dozens of images flashed through his head as the memories flooded in. Valentino's breath slowed, bitterness creeping in.

He turned the handle and pulled the door inward, only to see... Nathan?

Valentino froze, his breath hitching as his eyes darted to the string wrapped around Nathan's wrist.

Why Nathan?!

He stared down at the boy, taking in his crimson and tear-streaked face. Nathan stared right back, his eyes swollen.

This was much worse.

Why did it have to be his brother's best friend?

Nathan looked like he'd seen a ghost, like the worst thing had just happened to him, and Valentino hated that look.

He always had.

Nathan had always looked at him like he was bad news.

He was, to some degree, but still...

Valentino's hands rolled into fists by his side, his jaw clenching. His expression darkened further as he pulled Nathan up and dragged him into the room.

He shoved the boy to the ground, ran a hand through his hair and sighed. His heavy steps filled the air as he paced around the room.

His thoughts were all jumbled up. He'd always thought he'd never find his mate and even if he did, he'd expected them to be female and a stranger.

Nathan was anything but!

No one could know... no one could know, not until he cut the string.

Not until he got rid of this annoying wide-eyed kid that usually clung to his younger brother like a second skin.

A dumb tousle-haired boy that had no thoughts or judgement of his own, except if fed one.

An idiot who blindly took his brother who was also an idiot as his crush and treated him like his master.

Nathan was a fool.

Even more so that he looked like he would collapse when Mikhail introduced Elena as his mate.

His breaths turned heavy as more annoying thoughts filled his head.

His eyes darted to Nathan who was now standing awkwardly by the door.

He looked ready to flee, with those annoying blue eyes that looked at him like he was the devil's incarnate.

Valentino's palms itched.

If only he could smack him across the face and give him something genuine to be terrified of.

"No one must hear of this," he said, gauging the boy's expression. His eyes shot wide at the bitter laugh that slipped out of Nathan's mouth.

"Am I really that bad?"

Before he could stop himself, his hand moved to the boy's neck and pinned him to the wall.

If his brain hadn't done a quick reboot, a resounding slap would've followed.

Nathan gasped, struggling to breathe. Valentino watched in satisfaction as genuine terror overtook his expression.

This was more like it, he thought.

"NO ONE MUST HEAR OF THIS!" He repeated and a strained 'yes' reached his ears, before he released Nathan's neck.

The boy fell, gasping for air.

"Get out!"

He moved like a rat, scrambling to his feet. In milliseconds, he had bolted out of the door, gripping his neck.

Valentino hissed, consumed by pure rage.

He glanced at the string, wishing he could sever it right then. A mate was the last thing he wanted.

But fate had a mocking way of putting a person in their place.

"Out."

The female escort blinked, confused. She got on her knees and wrapped her arms around Valentino's neck, from behind.

Her smell was nauseating.

"Val, what's wrong?" She purred against his ear and Valentino felt bile rise in his throat. Anger surged through him and his jaw clenched.

"Get out!" He roared, causing the woman to flinch. She got off the bed, grabbed her clothes and hurried out of the hotel room.

"Fuck!" Valentino screamed, his hands combing through his hair.

They tugged at his locs, but the pain was nothing compared to the one in his wrist.

He never took interest in reading about the effects of the red string because he wasn't looking to be mated.

So, he didn't know.

He breathed heavily as the memories came.

He'd barely penetrated the escort when his head pounded. A high-pitched ringing filled his head and his wrist began to burn.

This was punishment.

He had to cut the string.

He shot up to his feet and slid into his clothes, trying to remember the address of Nathan's apartment.

He'd been there before when he had to pick up inebriated Mikhail after their freshman party a year ago.

Valentino slammed the door shut behind him and stormed through the hallway and into the elevator.

The drive to Nathan's apartment took twenty minutes, but he was barely aware. His knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel.

Celyn.

She would sever the string, he thought as he pulled the car to a stop in front of a tall apartment complex.

He walked into the building, oblivious to the curious stares of the tenants in the lobby.

He got to Nathan's floor, his steps echoing in the empty hallway as he walked through it.

Valentino couldn't believe his eyes.

He took in Nathan's limp form and walked up to where the boy was sprawled out on the threshold of his door, nudging him with his foot.

"Hey," he called, but there was no response.

A plethora of questions raced through his mind as he stood over Nathan.

Had he felt it, too?

This was beyond absurd. Beyond what Nathan could comprehend. Beyond anything he could have ever imagined. Valentino? In a maid's costume? His hand fell—much like his lower jaw did—from the door handle as his gaze swept over the outfit repeatedly."I'll be over there, sir," Andrew said from behind him, his voice low, breaking him from his trance. He gasped once and stepped into the apartment fully, before slamming the door shut. Then, his eyes sliced back towards Valentino. The man was red from the folds on his forehead to the hairy skin of his legs. His eyes were shut from what could only be perceived as both regret and mortification. "Valik..." His voice was barely above a whisper."Theo," Valentino whimpered, almost, his hands clenching into fists by his side. His lids flicked open and he bit his lower lip. The words just weren't coming. If they could even be called words. Just a lump of uhs and whys stuck in his throat. "T-take a seat."Nathan barely registered what he had sa

"So what's going on between you two?" Celyn whispered as she dropped onto the chair beside Valentino at the dining table. The man shot her a look, before his gaze darted to the living room at Nathan's approaching footsteps. "You did something wrong, right?"Valentino paid her no mind. His expression fell as he watched Nathan walk around to chair across from them and sat down."I knew it." Celyn chuckled low, a mocking rumble that made his jaw tighten. He let out a sigh and leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed. Had it been it were around 5–6 months ago, he wouldn't have cared less if the boy was throwing a tantrum.Now...Another sigh slipped past his lips. Now, it was different. Something about that poker-face, those cold shoulders, those blue eyes that once shimmered when they looked up at me but now avoided his...Something about them made his chest tighten.Cheryl soon walked in with the meals and served them each, casting Valentino the same what-did-you-do glance she

"I see Mikey's brother is veryy protective," Elena purred, her wine eyeshadow striking as she locked eyes with Nathan. Mikhail huffed beside her, clearly upset about the pet name. He nudged her side, drawing forth a cackle from her.Nathan sighed, glancing over at Andrew and Lucas. The two men were standing by the door to the cafe, their ridiculous sunglasses glued to their faces and their hands clasped behind their backs. He turned towards Elena and Mikhail sitting across the table and flashed them a nervous smile. "How have you been?" Mikhail asked, reaching for the coffee. His eyes never left Nathan as he took a long, slow sip. "Great, um... you?" The boy's hand flew to his nape, fingernails grazing the skin gently as he glinted at Elena. The girl stared back at him, her arms crossed and her expression blank. She reached for her coffee on the table and took a quick sip before setting it down. His fingernails dug deeper into his nape as shivers ran down his spine. He darted his

"What the hell's your problem?"Valentino's eyes flicked wide. He'd never seen Nathan this bold, nor had he seen him so visibly upset. The boy's legs wrapped around him like a vice, tight-much like his arms around his neck, trapping him dangerously between his thighs. His heart picked up, thumping in his ears, drowning out the sound of the TV in the background.Something hot and intense rushing violently to his crotch. Any more friction and he would lose control. He couldn't lose control. Nathan's brows were furrowed atop his glaring blue eyes. A sight he'd never thought would be such a turn on right now. His heart thumped. This was bad. This was dangerous. Too close. His member was directly against his, throbbing with need, savouring the heat coursing through the boy's pant.Warmth crept to his nape."Let me go," he managed amidst shaky breaths, unable to fully dart his thoughts away from non-existent distance between their cocks. Nathan huffed."No."Valentino let out a sigh

"Is this your idea of a date?" Valentino mumbled, his gaze sweeping over the carton of pizza and wine bottles. Nathan chuckled, his cheeks warm. "Yes, sir fancypants." Resting an elbow on the center table, he reached for the remote and turned towards him with a smile. "It might be a bit unimpressive, but you'll have to manage with me this once."Valentino's sigh cut through the air. The man ran a hand through his hair and chuckled, a low rumble that filled the living room. A place Nathan never remembered to be this small."It's better than nothing."The boy nodded, his heart fluttering. He turned the TV on and switched it to an ongoing animated movie. Then he winced internally and shook his head. If he'd let Valentino choose a date spot, he knew for sure he'd have taken them to some ridiculously expensive restaurant. There was no way he'd allow that. He already had trouble with the bodyguards. He'd die from sheer nervousness. His eyes darted towards the man, tracing his side pr

Valentino glanced over at Nathan, his chest tightening. He sighed once and dropped the pen, then rose to his feet and rounded the desk. The boy lay on the recliner, on his side, with his back facing him. "Theo."The flinch in his posture was almost palpable."What's wrong?" asked Valentino as he strode up to him and crouched down beside him slowly.Silence."Theo," Valentino purred again, this time, trying to hold back the laughter threatening to crawl out his throat. How cute! What could possibly be the problem? He definitely wasn't asleep."Did I do something wrong?" His hand reached for the boy's shoulder and he squeezed it gently. Nathan shifted and shook it off almost immediately. The man's brows arched. Maybe he had done something wrong. "I'm sorry, Theo," he murmured, sliding a hand round his waist. Nathan flinched, his skin twitching slightly. But he didn't shake him off. A sigh escaped Valentino. Thank God. "You're not gonna tell me what I did wrong? I wouldn't wanna

The sound of the sheets rustling drifted in the air, followed by a frustrated sigh as Nathan flipped to his side. He reached for his phone on the bedside table and turned it on to check the time.
