LOGINLYDIA
We had barely made it halfway through dinner when Vanessa stood up.
I watched uninterestedly while she began to clink her wine glass with her fork.
The annoying smile plastered on her face started to irk me and I looked away.
After all, the meal was more interesting than anyone or anything going on here.
"Everyone, I have an announcement I would like to make, good news," she said.
Her tone was cheerful.
Suspicion warped through me as I lifted my gaze to look at her, curious now.
When her eyes met mine, the glow in them was so bright it nearly blinded me.
I began to wonder why she had looked so smug and triumphant all evening.
My mother stopped eating and clasped her hands together on the table.
"Oh, darling, what is it?"
Vanessa placed the glass down and reached for her flat stomach with one hand.
She glanced at me and held my gaze.
"I'm two months pregnant."
There was silence for a moment.
My brain began to process the news.
"Oh my," my mother started and the table erupted with congratulations.
I just sat there and watched as my parents hugged her, my mother crying.
Somehow, deep down inside of me, I felt relief that she was pregnant.
She would finally leave my husband alone and build her own fucking family.
But that relief was soon cut short.
My suspicion grew larger when Adrian stepped forward and wrapped her in his arms like she was fragile.
She squealed softly into his chest and my gut feeling whispered the unspeakable.
I sat up in my chair, frozen with my fork hanging halfway to my mouth.
Two months?
For some reason, my sixth sense told me something was wrong with these settings.
If I remembered correctly, my husband had accompanied my sister on a trip two months ago to help her sort out the problems she had with her start-up company.
A tight lump grew in my throat as I fought over what was the truth and what mustn't be the truth.
I turned to look at Adrian the moment she stepped away from Vanessa.
He was smiling down at her with that same soft expression I had seen him give her at the door when we arrived.
It was an expression he never gave me.
"Adrian," I started.
My voice came out strangled.
"Is it yours?"
The table went silent.
All eyes turned to me.
I saw him swallow, his Adam ape bobbling slowly with the motion.
His jaw tightened making unease settle in my stomach.
"Lydia, don't make a scene."
My eyes widened like saucers before my heart fell to the soles of my feet.
"I shouldn't make a scene?!" I screamed, my nostrils flaring in anger.
I stood up so abruptly that my chair fell backwards and landed on the floor.
"My sister is pregnant for you, my husband and I shouldn't make a scene?!"
"Lydia," My mother snapped, getting tired of her feet. "Sit your stupid ass down."
I glared at her.
"No."
She went wide eyed.
My entire body was trembling as I ignored her and turned back to Adrian.
"How could you do this to me you, bastard? You got my sister pregnant while we are still married to each other!"
"Lydia," he replied in a sharp voice. "Our marriage is almost over in case you forgot."
I gasped softly.
"There is only four more months before I will be completely rid of you."
The words shouldn't have hurt considering the circumstances of our marriage.
But fuck it, it did.
I felt it deep down in my bones, it was almost as if my ribcage was pressing tighter around my heart.
"Look, until then, I would advise you to never forget your place Lydia."
"My place?"
I scoffed in disbelief, refusing to acknowledge that all of this was happening.
My eyes went round the dining table to behold each and every one of them.
But none of them could meet my eyes.
Except her.
My sister.
Vanessa stood beside Adrian, smirking wickedly in what I supposed was triumph.
"What exactly is my place in this family?" I muttered, the question more mine.
"Second place," Vanessa murmured.
My head snapped towards her.
"And is that the reason you were sleeping with your second place's husband?"
Her eyes nearly jumped out of their sockets as she stood there, thunderstruck.
"Y-youu," she stammered. "How dare you?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Mother, can you see how Lydia is taking to me!" She complained.
"Lydia!" My mother called, and I turned around to look at her.
I watched my mother's face grow firm with disapproval before she spoke.
"You should be grateful," she spat, "because everything you own is because of Vanessa!"
Those same lines.
Again.
I have had to listen to them ever since I was adopted into this poisonous home.
"You were unwanted."
The corner of my lips curled in distaste.
"If not for Vanessa who asked us to adopt you, you would never have had education, a home or even a family to call yours."
I sighed exhausted because now my mother sounded like a broken record.
"And is this how you will repay her?" She continued to be partial.
I shook my head slowly as a dry scoff escaped from between my lips.
"Grateful?"
I exhaled sharply through my nose as my teeth ground together.
"I should be grateful that my husband is having a baby with my sister?"
"Vanessa is not really your sister," my father began quietly, joining the conversation.
I was gobsmacked.
"Father, what do you mean?"
He stared up at me.
"You're not blood related. Besides, Adrian should have been hers from the start."
The words hit me like a brick and I looked at Vanessa, who was still smiling.
She had run away from the wedding, why did she want him now?
Because I wanted him?
"You planned this," I whispered. "You wanted him all along, didn't you?"
Vanessa's smile grew wide as she stepped forward, leaning into me.
"Of course I did."
Her voice dropped lower.
"Did you really think I would let you keep him after you stole him?"
My breath hitched.
"I told you Lydia, whatever you think is yours will eventually be mine."
LYDIAWe left after breakfast and made it to the conference room narrowly in time with about four minutes to spare. That was because Lucas had taken more time to freshen up after the meal.Morgan was already present inside the conference room, standing at the head of the table with a folder in her hands and a look on her face that instantly made my stomach to tighten before she had even said a single word because I knew exactly what that look meant.Trouble. Problem. What kind of quagmire were we all in this time and how bad was it?"The Riverside client is threatening to pull out of the project," she said. "They said they had received an anonymous tip this morning which pitched the claims that the lead designer of the project had plagiarized the lobby concept from a firm in Chicago."The floor felt unsteady underneath my body for a tense moment.What. The. Fuck.Like what the actual fuck?Plagiar
LUCASAfter a short while, Lydia raised her head to look at me, still breathing hard from the orgasm I had given her.“Help me down,” she whispered, her fingers curving around mine. So I held her hand in a furk grip, and helped her to easily slide off the counter. But before I could say anything, she dropped to her knees right there in front of me and when I stared down at her in that position, my heart slammed against my ribs at the stark realization of what she was trying to then. My brain struggled to catch up because I was not expecting any of it."Lydia,” I began, breathless, in a voice that was rough, with need and also desire, “you don't have to do this." She looked up at me with those dark eyes that always pulled me in. "I want to. Let me."She blinked.“Please.”I swallowed hard, my grip on her elbow loosening as a sign of defeat and utter surrender to her own wishes.
LYDIAI was roused from sleep by the soft morning light which was filtering in through the curtains. For a second, I didn’t know where I was. Then, everything from last night came rushing back to me—Lucas carrying me home, his calm voice telling me over and over again that I was safe. I turned my head to the side and saw that he was asleep, in a chair, by the window, with his head resting against the back, one arm hanging loose. He looked peaceful while he slept with his chest rising and falling slowly under his shirt from last night. I stayed there for a minute, just watching him—the way he slept, the way his hair fell across his forehead, the stubble on his jaw, the quiet strength in his face even while he was asleep. My heart did something funny that it wasn't supposed to in my chest. And I slipped out of bed carefully because I did not want to wake him up. When my feet touched the cool floor, I winced softly before I grabbed his shirt from the chair and carefully pulled it o
LUCAS' POVI was in my office late Monday evening when a knock came on the door and my head just lifted from the pile of work sitting on my office desk."Yes?" I called just before the second knock came on the door. The door knob turned and Morgan stepped into the doorway of my office."Sorry to disturb you sir, but there is a lady here to see you and she says that it is very urgent," she said as she stepped aside."Who is th—" I started to ask. And the words died in my mouth when Lydia walked into my office looking exhausted. I pushed back from my desk."Lydia," I whispered her name, standing abruptly from my revolving chair.I knew immediately that something was wrong because she was just managing herself carefully, holding it all together like someone who was close to the edge. There were dark circles under her eyes and she looked so tired and frail. Even I could see her hands were shaking slightly."Lydia, are you alright?" I asked before taking a step forward with wide eyes."Lu
LYDIA'S POV This saturday morning felt different from every other morning since my rebirth.I sat at my kitchen table reviewing the documents for the final account transfer which was spread out before me. A cup of coffee which had already gone cold was situated right at my elbow. This was the last of the account transfer documents and after I was done everything would now be under Lydia Vale. Not Darnell. Not Blackwell. It would all be mine. From the safety deposit box that held the original copies of every transaction and every other piece of evidence against Vanessa to the assets I had acquired.Completely mine.Sweet marred my furrowed brows while I carefully worked through each of the many pages—checking every name and number. When I worked last this and reached the final signature line, I signed it and set the pen down to look at what I had done.Lydia Vale. The name sat at the bottom like a prize and the announcement of my achievement. They would never be able to reach m
VANESSA'S POV"That was when the fashion bloggers asked her to just give a direct confirmation of the dating rumours," Fiona said in my ears.My phone was pressed to my left ear and I paced my bedroom while Fiona droned on about some useless gossip. This wasn't my problem. My exact worry now was that Lydia had managed to escape from every trap that we had set. Was it the embezzlement frame-up which I pushed her it? It had failed, woefully. Not even as bad as the financial theft I had set up that had easily gotten blocked. She was thriving at that architecture firm while the family business was now rapidly beginning to crumble around the edges. It was infuriating. "Vanessa!" Fiona suddenly screamed until my ears and taking off guard. My ears vibrated from the loud sound even as my body shook from being startled."What?" I screamed back into the receiver before my legs halted in my pacing."Are you even listening to me?" She asked in a voice that sounded slightly offended.I let out
