LOGINHonestly, I had no answer to Jake's question, because I didn't know how to explain to my son why his father kept making another woman's child his priority.
That evening, after putting Jake to bed early, I went to find Jackson. He was in his study, reviewing some pack document plans.
"We need to talk," I said from the doorway.
He didn't look up. "I'm busy."
"It's about Jake." I said, refusing to let him shun me away.
"What about him?" He asked, uninterested.
I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. "You hurt him today. In the garden."
"I didn't hurt him. I was spending time with Lily." He responded casually, feeling no remorse for hurting his son's feelings.
"And ignoring your own son in the process!" My voice rose despite my efforts to stay calm. "He asked for five minutes on that swing, Jackson. Five minutes. But you couldn't even give him that."
"Lily was upset—"
"Jake is five years old! He doesn't understand why you treat Lily better than him! Lily is not even your daughter, yet you treat your son like he doesn't matter!"
Jackson finally looked at me, his eyes cold. "Maybe if his mother wasn't so pathetic, I'd pay him more attention."
The words struck like a slap. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me." He stood, walking around the desk. "You walk around this pack house like a ghost. No authority, no power, no presence. You're not a Luna. You're barely even a wife."
"Because you've never let me be! You swore to punish anyone who ever called me your Luna, Jackson!" Tears burned my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "You've never marked me, never claimed me, never given me a chance—"
"I never wanted you!" he shouted. "Isn't it obvious?”
“I wanted Sophia! I was supposed to marry her, build a life with her, but you ruined everything!" He spat angrily.
"I ruined everything?" I laughed bitterly. "You got drunk and forced yourself on me! I was just a maid doing her job!"
"And you got pregnant to trap me!" He shot back.
"I was eighteen years old and terrified! I didn't trap anyone!" I tried to defend myself.
Jackson grabbed my arm, pulling me close. "You know what I think? I think you saw an opportunity and took it. Poor little Elena, suddenly elevated to “Luna”. Must have felt like winning the lottery."
I jerked free from his grip. "I never wanted this. I never wanted to marry someone who hates me."
"Then leave!" He snapped angrily.
The words hung in the air between us.
"What?" I couldn't believe my ears.
"Leave," Jackson repeated, coldly. "Take your things and go. I'll give you money, set you up somewhere far from here. You can start over."
"And Jake? What happens to him?" I asked him.
His jaw tightened. "Jake stays with me."
"Absolutely not—"
"He's the Alpha's son. He belongs to this pack." Jackson's voice was final. "You can leave, Elena. But my son stays."
"You don't even want him! You ignore him, neglect him—"
"He's still mine!” He cut me off. “And I won't have people saying I let my son be raised by a low-rank omega in some distant pack." Jackson returned to his desk. "Those are your options. Stay and be invisible, or leave without Jake. Choose."
I stood there, shaking with rage and helplessness. He had me trapped again, just like his father had.
His phone chimed on the table and he checked it. He read the text and his lips curved into a wide smile as he typed his response back.
I didn't need anyone to tell me that the text was most definitely from Sophia. I mean, it was completely obvious.
"I hate you," I whispered, my voice shaky.
"The feeling is mutual." He didn't even look up from his phone. "Close the door on your way out."
I fled to my room, finally letting the tears fall. Through the wall, I could hear Jake crying in his sleep, calling for his papa. My heart broke into a million pieces as I cried myself to sleep.
Many hours later, I was awakened by my phone ringing. I rubbed off sleep from my eyes and realized it was a call from an unknown number.
I was hesitant at first but eventually picked the call.
"Hello?"
"Elena Stone?" A woman's voice, unfamiliar.
"Yes. Who is this?" I asked, curiously.
There was a brief moment of silence before the response came,
"A friend. Someone who knows what Sophia is really doing in your pack."
My heart raced. "What are you talking about?"
"Meet me tomorrow. The old coffee shop on Market Street. Two o'clock." The woman paused. "Come alone. And don't tell anyone, especially not your husband. Your son's life might depend on it."
"Wait, what—"
The line went dead before I could finish talking.
I stared at the phone, my hands trembling. “What did she mean about Jake's life?” I thought to myself.
Suddenly a crash echoed from downstairs, followed by loud chaotic shouting. I ran to the hallway, looking down into the foyer.
Pack warriors were everywhere, and Beta Raphael was shouting orders.
"Lock down all exits! Search every room!" I saw him yell orders at the warriors.
"What's happening?" I called down.
Beta Raphael looked up at me, his face grave. "There's been an attack on the southern border. Several pack members are injured."
My blood ran cold. "What?! Is Jackson—"
"He left earlier. He's currently at the resort with Sophia. We can't reach him." He answered, concerned etched on his face.
His phone suddenly rang, and he answered it quickly. "What? Are you sure?" His face went pale. "Understood. Increase security around the pack house immediately."
"Raphael, what is it?" I asked, my heart beating fast.
He hesitated, then said quietly, "The attackers are headed specifically to your quarters."
The room spun, and I grabbed the railing for support.
"Where is Jake now?" Raphael demanded.
"He is in his room. Sleeping." I responded quickly.
"Please get him, and bring him to the safe room. Now. I'll be there shortly." Raphael replied, and ran off again.
I didn't even wait to ask questions too. I ran to my son's room, my heart pounding hard.
The moment when I opened the door, my world stopped. The window was open, curtains blowing in the night breeze.
But… Jake's bed was empty.
"JAKE!" I screamed, rushing to the window.
Beta Tristan led the way through one corridor after another, his pace brisk and unyielding, and I hurried along behind him, careful to keep close enough that I wouldn't fall behind and far enough that I wasn't stepping on his heels. We finally stopped in a long, narrow hallway lined with closed doors on either side. He turned to face me, his arms folding across his chest."This is where you will spend most of your time from now on," he said. "Before we go any further, I need you to understand something.""Yes, sir." I paid close attention to every word."I will not condone slackness." His voice was laced with firmness, and finality. "Not one ounce of slackness from you or anyone serving in this household will be condoned. Do you understand?""Yes, Beta." I answered, and nodded quickly."The Alpha," He continued, his tone dropping slightly, "is a very sensitive man. He is more sensitive than you can imagine, especially given everything that has happened in recent times which I'm sure y
"Yes, Alpha." Those words strangely echoed in my head, refusing to make sense. My eyes darted around the corridor, scanning every shadowed corner, every alcove, and every space large enough to hide a man, but there was nothing. There was absolutely no one. The hallway remained exactly as empty as it had been a moment before, save for the four of us standing frozen in it.I didn't understand.Beta Tristan was the first to recover. He blinked once, sharply, like someone clearing water from his eyes, and straightened his shoulders."You heard the Alpha." He said, his voice tight, and directed at Cain and the two guards. "He has instructed that she is not to be sent back."My heart dropped to my stomach and then straight through the floor.I stared at Tristan, waiting for him to be wrong. I desperately waited for someone to correct him, and say he made a mistake but nobody did. Cain's face was still pale, and the guards stood rigid, both of them avoiding my eyes entirely."Leave us." Bet
The walk to the Alpha's quarters felt endless. It felt like we were heading to the end of the world. The guards kept a firm grip on each of my arms, half dragging me along the stone path, my bare feet stumbling over uneven ground I couldn't fully see in the dark. Tears blurred everything around me, but even through them, I noticed something strange the moment the towering structure of the quarters came into view.It was quiet, but I didn’t understand the silence. I had tried to live in silence for a long time, and it was that heavy and suffocating type of silence that came after loss, but this one was different. This silence had something else attached to it. It was like a pressure that pressed against my skin the closer we got, like the air itself was holding its breath. My stomach turned over slowly inside me, and then I heard something I hadn't heard in longer than I could remember.“Something is different here.” I froze for half a step, startled as I recognized the voice of my wo
~MOON DAWN PACK~"JAKE!!!"I jerked awake, my own scream tearing through my throat before my eyes were even fully open. My hands clawed at the air in front of me, still reaching, and trying to hold onto something that wasn't there."Jake!" I gasped, scrambling upright on the thin mat. "Jake, I'm here, I'm right here—""Elena." I heard my name as gentle hands grabbed my shoulders firmly. "Elena, stop. Look at me. Please, look at me right now."It was Mira. Her face came into focus slowly, her brows pulled together, her eyes wide and worried."He's gone," I choked out, the dream still vivid and raw behind my eyes. "They took him. He was right there, Mira. I had him, he was in my arms and they took him again—""Elena, listen to me." Her grip on my shoulders tightened. "You have to lower your voice right now. Else, Cain will hear you.""But I had him." The tears streamed down my face, hot and unstoppable. "I finally had him and they took him. They ripped him right out of my arms and he wa
~ELENA~The forest pressed in around me from every direction, dense and unfamiliar. The trees were too tall and the air was too thick with the scent of wet bark and rotting leaves.Honestly, I didn't know how I got here. I just knew I was standing in the middle of nowhere.I turned slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs inside of me. My eyes scanned the whole place as I searched the shadows between the trees, waiting for something to move, but nothing did."Hello?" My voice came out barely above a whisper, but silence answered me.“Hello.” I tried again, a bit louder this time, but my voice echoed back to me.And so I kept walking, my steps careful on the uneven ground, and my senses stretched as far as they could reach. I knew something was wrong, I could feel it deep inside me, but I couldn't even point out what was wrong in this place I couldn't name. I couldn't even remember arriving here. I couldn't remember where I was before or what I was doing or how I arrived where I was
Zane pulled the door to Milan's room shut behind him and stood in the corridor for a moment. He stared at the small container still in his hand, and thought of what Milan had asked him to do.“But this isn't right.” He muttered inaudibly to himself. Then he slipped the container into the inside pocket of his jacket, and started walking away.He hadn't gone far down the corridor before he heard quick footsteps behind him, and then Vera appeared at his side, slightly breathless, her eyes searching his face for answers before he could even open his mouth to speak."Well?" She asked, keeping her voice low. "Was there anything? Did he say anything useful?"Zane shook his head, his expression showing slight disappointment. He made sure not to tell her anything about the substance Milan gave to him.Vera's shoulders dropped, sadly. She exhaled slowly through her nose, the sound of someone who had expected the answer but had been hoping anyway. "So what do we do now?""I'm going to try speaki
The silence that followed was suffocating. Raphael laid crumpled against the shattered remains of the bookshelf, wood splinters digging into his palms, and books scattered around him like fallen soldiers. His skull throbbed where it had connected with the edge of the shelf, and he could feel the s
Hearing Sophia’s voice, Jackson's expression immediately turned into concern. One I couldn't find in his eyes even after we had informed him that his own son had been kidnapped.“What is going on? What's happening to Lily? She has a fever? How high?" He turned away from me, his voice softening. "Ok
WEEKS ONRED FLARE PACK“No! I forbid you to go out there in search of her!” Alpha Jackson yelled at Beta Raphael.“Again?!” Beta Raphael sprung to his feet, getting a bit upset. “Come on, man.”They had both been discussing some important pack matters when he asked Alpha Jackson again for permissi
