LOGINScarlett made her way back to the cabin, her head still reeling from the brief argument with Lucas. The forest with all its shadows seemed to bear down on her, yet she forced her eyes fixed forward, not letting her mind wander. No second-guessing of decisions. Not now.
As she pushed open the door to the cabin and stepped in, she found Alex and Rachel already up and tension hanging thick in the air. Alex's eyes immediately locked with hers, a silent question passing between them.
"Did you find anything?" Alex asked in a low voice.
Scarlett shook her head. "No, but we need to move fast. Lucas's pack won't wait long before coming after us."
Rachel nodded, her face set in determination. "We need to get to the Shadow Pack. They're the only ones who can help us now."
Scarlett bit her lip, her heart hammering against her chest. The Shadow Pack was dangerous, cruel, and bargaining with them was a gamble. But there was no other way. Lucas's pack was stronger, and they were no match without an ally.
"Are you positive that they would help us?"
Scarlett spoke her mind.
"They loathe Lucas's pack as much as we do."
Alex told her. "If they see that we could offer them something in exchange, they would ally with us."
Scar knew he was right. The Shadow Pack had never really gotten along with Lucas's pack. If they played their cards right, they could have a powerful alliance.
"Fine," Scarlett answered, strong in her voice. "We go to them. But we still have to be careful. It's not like they're known for their loyalty, after all."
Rachel stood, collecting their supplies. "We will be. Ready."
Minutes dragged by, then they were hiking; the shadow consumed them as they trekked further into the Shadow Pack's domain. The remainder of the journey was strained; each rustle of leaves or crack of a twig was surrounded by anxiety. Scarlette's thoughts were fully immersed in turmoil, as what they were going to do began to bear down on her.
No neon lights went off. It was just the feeling that the air had changed as they drew closer to the Shadow Pack's camp; it became colder, more oppressive. Wolves watched them from the shadows: nothing more than silhouettes and glimmers of eyes in the dark.
Still, they reached a clearing, and some wolves had gathered. At their core, Ethan, the Shadow Pack's beta, was to be found there. His eyes were sharp and calculating.
"What brings you here, Scarlett?" Ethan asked, his voice smooth but with an edge of danger.
Scarlett took a deep breath and a step forward. "We need your help. Lucas is coming after us, and we need allies."
Ethan's eyebrow raised as a hint of a smirk played at his lips. "And what makes you think that we would be interested in helping you all?"
Scarlett met his gaze unwaveringly. "Because we have something you want. Lucas's pack is strong, but together we can take them down. You get to weaken your enemy, and we get to survive."
Ethan thought over her words, narrowing his eyes. "And what's in it for us besides that?"
Scarlett knew that this was the moment to play her hand. "If you help us, we could share control of the territory we take from Lucas. It's a chance to expand your influence."
The other wolves around Ethan just looked away, clearly interested in the proposition. But Ethan wouldn't be an easy one to fool.
"And how do we know that you will do the follow-up?" he said doubtfully.
"Because if we don't, you'll have nothing to lose by finishing us off. But if we work together, we can both come out on top."
He looked at her for a long, silent moment. Finally, he nodded, and a slow smile spread over his face. "Alright, Scarlett. You've got a deal."
Scarlett felt the wash of relief at that, though she carefully kept her face expressionless. "Good, we have to move quickly. Lucas won't wait long before he moves."
Ethan signaled his wolves, who moved to prepare, grabbing weapons and collecting supplies. Scarlett could feel the shift in the air the tension was so heavy with the anticipation of the battle about to unfold.
As they walked out of the camp, Ethan strode similarly with Scarlett at his side, his voice low as he commented, "You're playing a dangerous game, Scarlett, but got to say, I like your style."
Scarlett gave him a sidelong look; her expression spelled out hard. "This isn't a game, Ethan. It's survival."
Ethan chuckled softly. "'Survival' is the most dangerous game of all."
They traveled quickly, and the Shadow Pack moved with a lethal grace that put Scarlett on edge. She knew they were dangerous allies, but they were necessary. Without them, they had no chance against Lucas.
As they neared the edge of Lucas's territory, Scarlett's heart thudded in her chest. This was it; this was the moment when everything would change. The moment when she would face Lucas again was not a betrayer but an enemy to be defeated.
They reached the periphery of the territory, and Scarlett signaled with her hand for all of them to go no farther. "We have to be really careful," she whispered. "We don't know how many of them are out there."
Ethan nodded, and he fanned his wolves out, letting them take position. Scarlett, Alex, and Rachel stayed close, scanning the dark forest around them with their eyes.
Then, with a howl that rang clear and sharp in the stillness of the night, something inside Scarlett went cold with blood. It was a call, a summons, a warning.
Lucas's pack was ready for them.
The next second, the forest was alive in turmoil. Wolves came blazing from all the sides and, in a blur of teeth and claws, clashed with the Shadow Pack. Scarlett was in instinct mode, finding herself where she fell into movement with his typical lightning speed, attacks and dodges going forth and back with all the precision.
In the center of the whirlpool of bodies, Scarlett at last regained view of Lucas, his powerful form only vaguely visible when he battled his way toward her. His eyes found hers, and Scarlett was filled with anger and hurt and something she couldn't quite put her finger on.
Lucas made it to her, and they were spinning into a blur of attack and defense. They were evenly matched, each blow returned in kind, each move echoed by its opposite.
"Why are you doing this, Scarlett?" shouted Lucas over the havoc, frustration in his voice.
A death stare was all she afforded him, her breath coming in short gasps. "Because you left me no choice, Lucas. You made me your enemy!"
There was a gleam in Lucas's eyes, a flash of hurt, but he did not back down. "You don't have to be. We can end this, Scarlett. Just stop!"
She couldn't stop now, not after everything that he had done. It was also fueling: betrayal, lies urging her to just keep fighting.
A powerful kick sent Lucas sprawling to the ground. Scarlett panted heavily, heart pounding, as she stood over him with her hand clenched around the weapon in her hands.
Lucas looked up at her; his eyes were filled with something that made her hesitate. "Scarlett," he said softly, "Please. Don't do this."
Time stood still at that one moment. The battle, the noise, the chaos all faded away, and there were only the two of them: Scarlett's hand was shaking as she gazed down at him, racing through her thoughts.
But then she remembered the pain, the betrayal, and her resolve hardened. "It's too late, Lucas," her voice was cold.
She lifted her weapon, but before she could finally bring it down, a huge force crashed into her and threw her to the ground. Scarlett hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of her.
Coming to her senses, Scarlett found Ethan standing over her, his expression fierce. "Not yet, Scarlett," he said, low and dangerous. "We still need him."
Scarlett did get to her feet, her mind in turmoil. Ethan's words cut through her anger, forced her to see the bigger picture. Killing Luke now would be satisfying, but it would solve nothing. They needed him alive to end this war once and for all.
Scarlett snapped back in frustration and finally dropped her weapon, her chest heaving with the effort to control her emotions. "Fine," she snapped. "But this is not over."
Ethan nodded, his eyes glinting with approval. "Good. Let's finish this."
As the battle still raged around them, Scarlett realized this was just the start. The alliance with the Shadow Pack had seemingly secured them for some time, but the war ahead was long. And deep down, she realized that whatever her feelings for Lucas were as confused and painful as they were, the battles to come would only make those heaped upon her much harder.
But for now, they had to survive. And Scarlett was ready to go to any measure possible to ensure they did.
For several seconds, no one moved.Scarlett kept staring at the engraved stone resting in her palm, her thumb tracing the rough edges while her mind struggled to make sense of the message carved beneath it.Don't trust the guide. The words were uneven, as though they had been scratched into the stone in haste. Tiny flakes of dust still clung to the grooves, and one corner was stained with Kael's blood. He had not written those words to frighten anyone. He had written them because he believed he might never have another chance.Lucas stepped beside Scarlett."Let me see."She handed him the stone carefully. He examined it for several moments before passing it to Ethan."The writing is definitely Kael's."The Black Fang Alpha remained kneeling beside the abandoned cloak. He hadn't spoken since recognizing it.Scarlett watched him quietly.Leadership often demanded impossible choices, but there was another burden few people talked about.Watching good people disappear under your command.
The strip of black cloth rested in Lucas's hand like a silent warning. No one spoke. The embroidered crest of the Black Fang Pack was unmistakable, but it wasn't the symbol that unsettled Scarlett. It was the dark stain soaking into the fabric. The blood hadn't dried completely.Whoever had worn it hadn't been gone for long. The forest around them suddenly felt different. A few moments earlier it had been nothing more than another stretch of woodland separating them from Moonwater Lake. Now every tree seemed capable of hiding danger, every shadow appeared deeper than before, and every gust of wind sounded like footsteps just beyond their reach. The Black Fang Alpha accepted the torn cloth from Lucas. His fingers closed around it carefully, almost respectfully.Scarlett noticed the subtle change in his expression. Until this moment, he had carried himself like a leader focused on a mission. Now something far more personal had entered his eyes.Concern.Not for the map.Not for the cons
The sound of approaching horses rolled across the valley in slow, steady rhythms, carried by the morning breeze. Every member of the group instinctively fell silent, listening as the hoofbeats grew clearer with each passing moment.Scarlett carefully folded Elena's letter and slipped it inside her jacket before closing the wooden box. Whatever happened next, she refused to leave behind anything her mother had protected with her life.Lucas noticed the movement and gave a slight nod."Good."His voice remained barely above a whisper."If they've followed us this far, we assume they know this place."Scarlett agreed. The hidden compartment beneath the stones was still open. Anyone arriving now would immediately know someone had discovered Elena's first secret. The advantage of surprise was already gone. The Black Fang Alpha looked toward Ethan."How many?"Ethan had climbed halfway up a rocky slope to gain a better view of the valley. Remaining low, he watched the ridge through the bran
No one reached for the wooden box immediately. The sound of the ancient mechanism settling back into silence still echoed faintly across the valley, and every wolf understood that a single careless decision could destroy something Elena had hidden for more than twenty years.Scarlett stepped closer, unable to take her eyes off the weathered box resting inside the stone compartment. Its surface was worn smooth by time, yet remarkably intact. There were no elaborate carvings or jeweled decorations, only a small crescent engraved into the center of the lid. The symbol matched the one hidden inside her necklace and the markings carved throughout the forest. Her mother had left her signature. Not for the world, for her.Lucas knelt beside the opening without touching the box."What do you think?"Scarlett exhaled slowly."I think she expected me to find it."A faint smile crossed Lucas's face."Then she probably expected you to know how to open it."The statement lingered in Scarlett's tho
The forest seemed to hold its breath.Scarlett stared at the carved words etched into the ancient tree, her pulse quickening as the meaning settled over the group. You are late. The message wasn't old. That much was obvious. The cuts in the bark were fresh. Small fragments of wood still clung to the edges of the carving, and the scent of newly exposed timber lingered in the cool morning air.Someone had been here recently.Very recently.Lucas stepped closer to examine the symbol above the message. The moonlight filtering through the canopy caught the grooves in the bark, making the markings appear almost alive."It hasn't been here long."Ethan nodded in agreement."Hours."The answer immediately darkened everyone's expressions. If the estimate was correct, whoever left the message was ahead of them by only a small margin. Not days. Not weeks.Hours.Scarlett's fingers tightened around the metallic strip hidden inside her pocket. The same symbols, the same pattern, the same language
The stranger's warning lingered in the clearing long after he finished speaking."Someone else has already found the second piece."Scarlett immediately disliked how confident he sounded. Not because she trusted him.Because throughout every confrontation, he had rarely spoken without purpose. Every statement seemed carefully chosen, designed to influence the people around him. Sometimes he lied. Sometimes he manipulated. Yet the most dangerous moments were when he simply revealed enough truth to create doubt. The possibility that another piece of the map had already been discovered changed everything. What had begun as a search was becoming a race.A dangerous one.Lucas stepped closer to Scarlett."We need to move."His voice remained calm, but urgency lingered beneath it.Scarlett nodded. For once, there was little room for debate. Every hour mattered now.The silver-haired woman turned toward Aldric."How long would it take to reach Moonwater Lake if we leave immediately?"The old
