LOGINPOV: EVE
Eve woke to sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows and the immediate, brutal awareness that something was very, very wrong.
Her body ached. Not the pleasant soreness of a good workout, but something deeper...intimate. Her thighs trembled when she tried to move. Her core felt tender, used, claimed in ways she'd never experienced.
And she was naked.
Completely, utterly naked in a bed that wasn't hers, wrapped in sheets that smelled like expensive cologne and sex and something darker she couldn't name.
Dimitri.
The memory crashed over her like ice water: The bar. The whiskey. Climbing into his lap. Begging....oh God, she'd begged him to touch her. His fingers inside her. His mouth on her. Coming so hard she'd screamed his name.
And then... nothing. Blackness. Had they...?
She sat up too fast, and her head spun with the remnants of alcohol and pleasure and regret. The room came into focus slowly....masculine, massive, expensive. Dark wood and leather furniture. A door that probably led to a bathroom. Another that must lead out.
Out.
She needed to get out.
Eve swung her legs over the edge of the bed, hissing at the soreness, and stood on shaky legs. Her dress from last night lay in a crumpled heap on the floor. Her shoes were nowhere to be seen. Her purse...where was her purse?
She grabbed the dress, started to pull it on, and that's when she saw it.
A folder on the nightstand. Cream-colored, expensive-looking, with her name written across the front in elegant script.
Eve Thorne
Her hands shook as she picked it up, opened it, and started to read.
AGREEMENT OF OWNERSHIP
This contract, entered into on [last night's date], between Dimitri Valentino (hereafter "Owner") and Eve Thorne (hereafter "Property")...
Property.
The word made her stomach drop.
She kept reading, each line worse than the last:
Duration: Six (6) months from date of signing
Terms: - Property's body, time, and choices belong exclusively to Owner - Property will make herself available at Owner's beck and call - Property will obey all instructions given by Owner - Property will not engage in sexual or romantic contact with any other person - Property's location, schedule, and activities require Owner's approval - Owner reserves the right to punish Property for disobedience
Compensation: - Owner will provide financial support, protection, and pleasure - Owner will ensure Property's safety and well-being
Termination Clause: - Either party may terminate this agreement before the six-month period - Party initiating early termination must pay the other party $50,000,000 (fifty million dollars) for emotional damages
And there, at the bottom, in handwriting that was definitely hers but that she had zero memory of producing:
Eve Thorne
She'd signed it.
She'd signed away six months of her life to Dimitri Valentino.
Fifty million dollars. Fifty. Million. Dollars.
She didn't have fifty million dollars. She didn't have five million dollars. Her company was successful but not that successful. Her divorce wasn't even finalized. Her assets were tied up. She was, for all intents and purposes, broke compared to that number.
Which meant...
She couldn't leave.
She couldn't afford to leave.
She was trapped.
"No," she whispered, her voice cracking. "No, no, no, no, no."
She had to get out. Had to think. Had to find a way to fix this before....
Before what? Before Dimitri woke up and expected her to honor this insane contract?
Yes. Exactly that.
Eve pulled her dress on with shaking hands, not bothering with her bra or panties....wherever those had ended up. She grabbed her purse from a chair in the corner, checked for her phone (dead, of course), her wallet (still there), her keys.
She could leave. She could go to her apartment, charge her phone, call a lawyer, figure out how to break this contract. There had to be a way. Contracts signed while intoxicated weren't legally binding, were they?
She moved toward the door on silent feet, her heart hammering so hard she could hear it in her ears.
The bedroom door opened soundlessly. She stepped into a hallway....tastefully decorated, more expensive art on the walls, thick carpet that muffled her footsteps.
She could hear... nothing. No sounds of movement. No indication that anyone else was awake.
Good.
POV: DANTEThe morning sun was harsh on Dante's face as he stood on the terrace of his estate in Rome, looking out at the city spread below him like a kingdom he was about to reclaim. His legs were perfect now. No pain, he has complete mobility now . The experimental treatment The Covenant had provided had worked beyond anything he'd dared to hope for. The healing was complete. The recovery was absolute. And for the first time since the warehouse in New Jersey, Dante felt like himself again. He felt dangerous. He felt unstoppable. The memory of Salvatore came to him like it always did in moments of clarity. His brother, dead in a Rome alley because Dimitri Valentino had decided he wasn't worth preserving. Four months, and the wound hadn't closed. Four months, and Dante could still see his brother's face in those final moments, could still feel the rage of losing him, could still taste the hunger for revenge.Salvatore.And then there was Isabella. The obsession that had started as pol
Eve's hand tightened on his chest."How is that possible?" she asked."Because they have resources I didn't anticipate," Dimitri said, his voice dropping into something heavier. "They have connections that go beyond what should even be possible. They have government backing. Federal funding. Protection at levels that suggest they're not just operating with government immunity, they're being actively funded by government agencies."Eve processed this in silence."And they're backing Dante," Dimitri continued. "They're not just allowing him to operate. They're actively supporting his recovery, his operations, his vendetta against me. They're using him as a weapon."Eve lifted her head to look at Dimitri's face in the darkness, though she could barely see him. She reached up and touched his jaw, her palm against his skin."That's why everyone was here tonight," Eve said. It wasn't a question."Yes. Mike brought intelligence. Marco and I strategized response. Enzo is investigating their o
"That's..." Enzo started, then stopped. "That's bigger than I thought.""Yes," Dimitri said. "Which is why we need your information more than ever. We need to understand what The Covenant is doing in Rome. We need to know if there are government officials there who are also involved. We need to know if this is a U.S. government operation or if it extends internationally.""I'll dig deeper," Enzo said. "But Dimitri, if government is involved at this level, if we're talking about federal agencies, then we need to be careful about how we respond. You can't fight the U.S. government the same way you fight organized crime.""I know," Dimitri said. "That's why we're not going to fight them directly. We're going to understand them first. We're going to map their operations, their assets, their vulnerabilities. And then we're going to figure out how to protect ourselves without triggering a response we can't survive.""And what about Dante in the meantime?" Enzo asked."Dante stays alive," Di
"Show me," Dimitri said.Mike pulled up the files on the encrypted laptop he'd brought. Financial flows. Government contracts. Shell company structures. Spending patterns that made no sense on the surface but formed a clear picture when you understood what you were looking at.The United States government was funding The Covenant."Here's what I found," Mike continued, pulling up the second set of files. "Dante is the primary asset they're currently weaponizing. But there are others. Multiple other proxies receiving support and protection. And the thing is...when I tried to identify the top-level assets, I hit a wall.""What kind of wall?" Marco asked."The kind protected by federal classification," Mike said. "The names are encrypted. The identities are classified at levels that suggest high-level government involvement. My conclusion is that some of The Covenant's top assets are government officials. People with enough power to provide protection and funding without consequence."Di
Webb called at 4:33 AM."I found something," Webb said, his voice tight with the excitement of a journalist who'd stumbled onto real news. "Or rather, I found evidence of something. There are traces of a privately funded research organization that's been operating for at least fifteen years. They have government contracts. They have government protection. And they have funding from multiple sources including defense contractors and pharmaceutical companies.""What do they do?" Mike asked."That's the part that's classified," Marcus said. "But based on the funding levels, based on the contract language, based on the facilities they're operating from, my guess is biomedical research. Advanced biomedical research. The kind that might be considered unethical by civilian standards."Mike closed his eyes."The Covenant," Mike said."What?" Webb asked."Nothing. Keep investigating," Mike said, and hung up.****THIRTY-SIX HOURS INTO THE INVESTIGATION*Mike had compiled everything into a comp
POV: MIKEThe first call came at 8:47 PM.Mike was in his office, the city spreading out below him like a map of all the connections he'd spent years building. He dialed a number from memory, not from his phone, from actual memory. This was too sensitive for digital trails. The phone rang twice."Yeah?" The voice on the other end was gravelly, suspicious. Tommy. A port manager Mike had cultivated for three years. A man with access to shipping manifests, customs records, and the kind of information that flowed through the city's lifeblood."Tommy," Mike said. "I need information.""The kind that costs?" Tommy asked."The kind that costs a lot," Mike confirmed. "I'm looking for financial flows. Large ones. Moving through New York in the last six months. Flowing toward a specific organization.""What organization?" Tommy asked."Can't say," Mike said. "But you'll know it when you find it because the trail will be sophisticated. Professional. Hidden behind shell companies and internationa
