The inside of the Maybach was too quiet. It was like a space that sucked all the air out of my lungs when the heavy doors of the car closed us away from all the noise of the press. Outside people were yelling; inside all I could hear was the sound of Julians watch ticking away.

Julian did not look at me. He sat still like a statue, with his hands on his knees. I could see a vein beating in his neck. I had surprised him. For a man like Julian Vane being surprised is a big mistake.

"You are good at making moves Elena " he said finally. His voice was low and scary. It made the hair on my arms stand up. ". A move only works if you can handle what happens next. You just let the world into a room that I spent a lot of time keeping closed."

"The door was already open Julian " I said, my voice shaking. I turned to face him. I made myself look into his cold blue eyes. "Your father was going to use me to hurt you in front of the cameras. I did not just save myself. I saved your company."

Julians hand moved fast. He did not hit me; instead he put his hand on the back of my neck and his thumb pressed on the skin behind my ear. It was not a touch; it was a reminder of who was in charge.

"I do not need someone to save me Elena. I need someone who understands that every word is like a bullet. You just fired a shot without knowing where the other dangers are hiding."

He leaned in close. His smell. Something sharp, like lightning and expensive soap. Was overwhelming. "My father does not play by the rules of the press. He plays by his rules. You think you are safe because the cameras are watching? That just makes it more profitable for him."

By the time we got to the Vane Tower, the tension was thick like something I could feel in the back of my throat. Julian led me through the entrance his grip on my arm tight telling the security teams that I was still under his protection.

Sarah was waiting in the penthouse. She was not being my friend anymore; she was being cold and efficient. It made me want to wash my skin. She gave me a suit. Grey, sharp-shouldered and totally boring.

"The board is in the conference room " she said, her voice cold. She would not even look me in the eye. "Vivienne has been there for twenty minutes. She has already told the press what she thinks."

"Leave us Sarah " Julian said.

As she left,I felt how tired I was. I sat down in one of the leather chairs and the emerald dress felt like it was weighing me down.

"Go change " Julian said, his back to me as he looked out at the desert. "The board needs to see a woman who's in control not a victim of a scandal. Wear the grey suit; it will hide your sweat."

The boardroom was like a tomb. All glass and dark wood. Arthur Vane sat at the head of the table his face not showing any feelings his eyes watching my every move as I sat down next to Julian. Across from us,Vivienne looked like a doll but her eyes were red with anger.

The next hour was a blur. Lawyers talking about agreements and PR people trying to spin the "St. Judes connection" into a story of friendship. I sat there like a ghost realizing that to these people I was not a person.

As the meeting ended Vivienne stayed. She waited until the lawyers had left leaving the three of us in a room of hate.

"You think you are so smart don't you?" Vivienne whispered, her voice sharp. She pulled out a brown envelope and slid it toward me. "The truth you told the cameras? You might want to read the print before you start your little fight."

Julians hand moved fast. I got to the envelope first. My fingers shook as I opened it.

"Check the dates, Elena " Vivienne hissed, a smile on her face. "Julian told you he found your father a weeks ago. Check the money transfers. He has been paying for Silas care since the day he went to jail five years ago. He did not rescue him; he bought him."

I looked at the papers. Bank statements, money transfers. A private account linked to a Vane company paying fees to a hospital I had never heard of. Dated years before Julian ever came back into my life.

The room started to spin. I looked at Julian. He did not look guilty; he did not look sorry. He looked like an artist who had just finished a masterpiece.

"Is this true?" I whispered, the paper shaking in my hand. "You have had him this time?"

Julian stood up the chair scraping against the floor. He walked around the table stopping inches from me. He did not deny it; he did not even try to lie.

"I told you I was taking care of everything, Elena " he said, his voice soft and scary. "I told you I was providing for you. I just did not think you were ready to see the cost."

I stood up the grey suit feeling like a trap. I did not look at Viviennes smug grin. I did not look at Julians cold blue eyes. I just grabbed my bag. Walked out.

I did not take the elevator. I took the stairs my heels echoing in the concrete, like gunshots. I needed to feel my heart beating; I needed to feel something that he had not planned for me.

I walked over to the edge of the bed, my knees suddenly shaking beneath the heavy fabric of the midnight black gown. The cold, confident mask I had worn in front of the high-society crowd completely dissolved. Julian pulled off his tuxedo jacket, tossing it onto a chair before turning to face me. His ocean-blue eyes were still dark with that intense, protective adrenaline, his chest rising and falling heavily. "Are you okay?" he asked, closing the distance between us in three long strides. He reached out, his large, warm hands gently catching my face, his thumbs wiping away a faint trace of sweat on my cheek. "Did she hurt you with those words, Elena? Tell me." I looked up at him, my green hazel eyes wide as my mind continued to spin. "Julian, you broke the engagement. In front of everyone. In front of the entire board of directors." "I told you I would," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp. His fingers slid deep into my blonde hair, tilting my head

Vivienne’s breath was ragged as she stood there, waiting for the crowd to tear me apart, waiting for Julian to look ashamed, and waiting for me to break down in tears. But Julian didn't flinch.Instead, his arm tightened around my waist, lifting me even closer against his side, turning his body into a solid shield between me and the flashing cameras. He looked down at Vivienne with an icy, disgusted stare that made her loud shouts die instantly in her throat."Are you finished, Vivienne?" Julian asked, his voice low, and entirely lethal. He didn't wait for her to answer. Julian stepped forward, pulling me along with him, and raised his chin to address the entire ballroom. His powerful voice carried easily over the whispers, commanding absolute authority."Since you want to talk about our marriage alliance in public, let's make things very clear for the shareholders," Julian announced, his ocean-blue eyes scanning the room like a ruthless king. "As of right now, the engagement betwe

The grand ballroom of the Vane Luxury Resort was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive tuxedos, and flowing silk gowns. Hundreds of the most powerful people in Las Vegas were packed into the room, their voices filling the air with low, excited murmurs.Tonight, nobody was talking about business. They were all talking about the massive scandal that had hit the news yesterday morning. At the center of the VIP section stood Arthur Vane and Vivienne Montgomery. Arthur looked calm and powerful, holding a glass of champagne as he greeted shareholders. Vivienne looked stunning in a white designer gown, but her green eyes were flashing with a cruel, satisfied triumph. She thought she had won. She thought that by exposing Elena’s past, she had scared the girl away forever.Suddenly, the double doors of the ballroom swung open. The loud chatter in the room stopped instantly. The silence was so sudden you could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.Julian stepped into the ballroom, and right

The private elevator doors in the penthouse flew open with a loud bang. Julian stepped out, and I could tell immediately that he was absolutely furious. His jaw was clenched tight, his hair was a mess, and his tie was pulled loose. The usual calm, serious billionaire look he always had was completely gone. Right now, his blue eyes looked wild with fear and anger. He didn't care about his multi-billion-dollar company at this moment. He only cared about me. He ran across the room, his large hands grabbing my shoulders tightly. He didn't hurt me, but his grip was shaking. "Elena," he said, his voice deep and completely frantic. "My security team is downstairs right now clearing out the garage. I have a private jet waiting at the airport. I’m going to get you and your father out of Las Vegas before any of these reporters can get into the building." I looked up at him. For ten years, Julian had been the one watching me from the dark, planning everything perfectly. But now that his f

The morning sun broke, casting a warm, golden glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse.I woke up slowly, the weight of Julian’s arm wrapped securely around my waist keeping me pinned to the mattress. For the first time in ten years, I didn't wake up with a sudden jolt of panic. There was no urge to check over my shoulder, no frantic need to put on the fake, practiced smile I used to protect myself from the world.Turning my head slightly on the pillow, I looked at Julian. He was already awake, resting on his side and watching me with a soft, unblinking intensity. His short black hair was messy, and the sharp, serious look he usually wore as the CEO of Vane Enterprises had completely melted away. In its place was a look of pure, quiet adoration."Good morning," he murmured, his voice thick and coarse from sleep. He leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my forehead, his breath warm against my skin."Good morning," I whispered, a small, genuine smile tou

The storm outside finally began to pass, the violent rain tapering off into a quiet, rhythmic drizzle against the glass. Inside the penthouse master suite, I stayed exactly where I was, sitting on the edge of the massive bed with my head resting against Julian’s shoulder. His arm was still securely wrapped around my waist, his palm resting against the emerald silk of my dress. The heat radiating from his bare skin was a constant, solid anchor. For the first time in as long as I could remember, I didn't try to pull away. I didn't try to calculate an escape route or think of a lie to clear the distance between us. The sheer exhaustion of wearing a fake, practiced smile for the world had caught up to me, and surrendering to his embrace felt less like giving up and more like finally being allowed to breathe.Julian remained perfectly still, as if he were afraid that a single sudden movement would shatter the fragile peace between us and make me retreat behind my wall of ice again. His f
