Chapter 4

I stepped into the bathroom, and washed away the whole stress of the day. My mind wandered back to Lucas, I couldn't help it. We would have completed the ceremony now, and gone to his chambers. I won't have had to be alone.

My face darkened, imagining him with Manda. I was feeling uneasy, I'm sure they're together.

The betrayal of Mira came back to me, she made me bring down my guard. I should have been more careful. The signs were there, how she kept fishing for information from me, the one time I caught her going through my things. I should have asked her to explain, than to just accept the flimsy excuse she gave. Well the deed has already been done. I'll have to move on.

I showered and stepped out, I went to the wardrobe and selected a flowery gown that looked comfortable.

I let my hair down, and stepped out of my new room.

Agatha had told me that Aurelia's room was a few doors away from mine, I went to look for her.

It wasn't difficult locating her room.

The door was slightly ajar.

I knocked softly before pushing it open.

My breath caught.

The room was beautiful.

Moonlight streamed through tall windows draped with lavender curtains. A large canopy bed stood in the center of the room, its white curtains tied back with silver ribbons. Shelves lined one wall, filled with storybooks, stuffed wolves, and dolls dressed in tiny gowns.

A small table sat near the window, covered in crayons, colored pencils, and sheets of paper.

Everything looked perfect.

Yet something about the room made my chest ache.

Perhaps it was the drawings pinned neatly to a board above the desk.

Most of them were of Aurelia and Kael.

In one, they stood beneath a full moon holding hands.

In another, Kael carried her on his shoulders.

I found myself smiling.

Then my gaze drifted to a different drawing.

A family portrait.

Aurelia had drawn herself.

She had drawn Kael.

And standing beside them was a woman with long yellow hair and a smiling face.

My smile faded.

The woman had been drawn again and again in different pictures.

Sometimes she stood between them.

Sometimes she held Aurelia's hand.

Sometimes she was surrounded by hearts.

Aurelia had never met her mother.

Yet she had imagined her a hundred different ways.

My heart squeezed painfully.

For all the luxury surrounding her, she was still just a little girl wishing for something she didn't have.

"Aria!"

I turned to find Aurelia sitting on the floor beside her bed, a huge white wolf plushie clutched in her arms.

"I've been waiting for you."

"Really? I asked

"I'm here now".

"I hope you like your room? Will you like to redecorate it or repaint it?" She asked.

"No Aurelia, it's perfect" I said meaning it. Also I had no intention of staying long, this was just temporary. I was going out tomorrow to find what I'll do concerning where to leave, I can't stay here with Aurelia and Kael, I can't impose myself on anyone, no matter how much Aria wants me to stay. I've been rejected enough, I need something permanent and staying here could only be temporary.

I didn't tell Aurelia any of these, I didn't need to bother the little kid with any of my troubles.

"Aria, can you help me draw now? I hope you're not tired. Aurelia asked me so sweetly.

"Yes sweetheart, I can help you. I'm not tired". I replied her, when if I was I would have still agreed to help her. I can't just explain it but although I've only know Aurelia for such a short period I deeply adore her. It's like our soul connects in a way.

She brought out her pencils, crayon and drawing board. And spread it out on the floor.

I sat down beside her, and she stared drawing, asking my opinion so often on colours to use, pencil and everything. I didn't even realise how much time I spent with her drawing.

I heard the door open, Kael stepped in, he noticed me and his gaze got a bit intense, before he looked away.

He spoke to Aurelia, "Moonbeam it's time to sleep, you'll continue drawing tomorrow".

I quickly stood up, Aurelia I'll see you tomorrow, sleep well I said giving her a kiss on her forehead. Goodnight Alpha Kael. I said to Kael, trying to head out.

Aurelia held onto my hands, "Wait Aria, you'll tuck me in with dad" she said.

I looked at Kael, I didn't think he liked that. But he didn't refuse. I've noticed he does anything that makes Aurelia happy, he might be a cold Alpha to everyone, but he really loves his daughter.

So I followed Kael and Aurelia to her bed. She lay on her bed, and Kael put a blanket over her.

She then asked " Daddy, won't you read the Wolf's Princess tale for me, I hope you remember where we stopped the last time".

I was surprised, so Alpha Kael reads bedtime stories to his daughter.

Kael picked up the book from the shelf and began reading.

Halfway through, I caught him glance in my direction.

His expression didn't change.

Yet somehow, I had the uncomfortable feeling he was aware of every second I spent in the room.

Before long Aurelia fell asleep.

We both stood up, I quickly apologized " I'm so sorry Alpha Kael, I know I'm intruding, I'll try not to do so again". I said.

He just nodded, without sparing me a glance.

"I'll be gone soon," I said.

"I'm going to look for a place to stay tomorrow."

Kael was silent for a moment.

Then he said,

"And where exactly do you plan to go?"

I blinked.

"I'll figure something out."

His expression remained unreadable.

"I see."

The words sounded almost dismissive

"Be ready to give an explanation to Aurelia that she'll understand" he added, and walked away.

I was certain finding a place to stay will be difficult, but explaining things to Aurelia couldn't be that hard.

At least, that's what I thought.

I woke to laughter. Not the quiet murmur of servants beginning another day. Not the distant footsteps that usually echoed through the manor before sunrise. Laughter. Bright and excited. Unmistakably Aurelia's. For a moment, I simply lay there, smiling to myself. Today. She was seven. A gentle knock sounded against my door. "Luna?" "Come in." Miss Agatha stepped inside carrying a garment bag draped carefully over one arm. "Good morning." "Good morning." She smiled. "I hope you slept well." "I did." "Excellent." She laid the garment bag across the chaise near the window before turning back to me. "I believe someone has been asking whether you're awake every fifteen minutes." I laughed. "Has she really?" "I'm afraid so." "Twice she attempted to come upstairs herself." "And twice she was persuaded that waking the Luna before sunrise was perhaps not the best birthday gift." I covered a smile with my hand. "That sounds like Aurelia." "

"Luna?" I turned. Miss Agatha stood a few steps behind me, her expression carrying the kind of quiet warmth that always seemed to put people at ease. "You look as though you're trying to plan three weeks' worth of work before supper." I let out a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. "Does it show that much?" "I'm afraid it does." A small smile tugged at my lips before fading almost as quickly as it had appeared. "I've been thinking." "I gathered as much." I glanced toward the front gardens where Aurelia had already disappeared with two maids, eagerly telling them all about the pendant Alpha Ashbourne had given her. "Her birthday is in three days." "It is." "And the Midsummer Summit is only three weeks away." Miss Agatha nodded patiently. "I know." I rubbed my forehead. "I've barely begun learning what it means to be Luna." "Now I'm expected to prepare for the most important gathering Blackwood has hosted in years." "And somehow..." My shou

The meeting concluded not long afterward. The council members departed one by one, each already discussing preparations for the Midsummer Summit in quieter voices. The moment the chamber doors closed behind the last elder, the room seemed noticeably lighter. Adrian rose from his chair. "It appears my visit has lasted longer than I intended." Kael stood as well. "Blackwood has enjoyed your company." "I appreciate the hospitality." His gaze shifted to me. "And the conversation." A faint smile tugged at my lips. "I learned quite a bit." "I hope so." He buttoned his jacket with practiced ease. "Three weeks may not seem like much time." His expression remained warm. "But it is enough." "If you use it well." I nodded. "I intend to." "I never doubted that." For reasons I couldn't quite explain... Those words meant more than I expected. When we'd first met, he'd come to judge the rumours surrounding Blackwood's new Luna. Now... It felt as thou

Elder Rowan's announcement settled over the room like a quiet warning. Kael rose first. "Show them to the council chamber." "Yes, my Alpha." Rowan inclined his head before leaving. Adrian remained seated for a moment, studying Kael with mild curiosity. Kael adjusted the cuff of his jacket. "If the council has come unannounced, then they believe whatever matter brings them here cannot wait." I stood as well. "Should I come?" Kael looked at me. "Yes." The answer came without hesitation. "You are Luna." Something inside me settled. Not because I suddenly felt prepared. Because Kael hadn't given me a choice. He simply expected me to stand beside him. Adrian rose from his chair. "I hope you won't consider it presumptuous if I accompany you." Kael met his gaze. "You're welcome to observe." "Thank you." Together, we made our way through the estate. The council chamber occupied the eastern wing of Blackwood House. Unlike the drawing room, it h

The dining room had been prepared with the same precision as the rest of the estate. Sunlight poured through the tall windows, reflecting softly against polished silver and crystal. The long dining table could have seated twice as many guests. Instead... Only four places had been set. Kael. Adrian. Me. And Rowan, who stood discreetly nearby despite my growing suspicion that he had no intention of actually sitting down. The servants moved almost soundlessly, placing each course before disappearing as efficiently as they had arrived. For a while... The conversation remained comfortably light. The unusually warm weather. Repairs to one of the western trade roads after heavy spring rain. I listened far more than I spoke. Not because I felt unwelcome. Because I was learning. Every conversation between Alphas seemed to have two versions. The words being spoken. And everything hidden beneath them. Adrian set down his fork. "I passed through Redbrook

The atmosphere in the drawing room had changed enough that the formality from earlier no longer felt quite so rigid. Adrian reached for his teacup, taking an unhurried sip before setting it carefully back onto its saucer. "I nearly forgot." He slipped a hand inside his jacket. "For someone who has unintentionally become the most persuasive voice in the room." Aurelia blinked. "Me?" A faint smile touched his lips. "You." He withdrew a small velvet pouch and held it toward her. "I brought this with me." Aurelia didn't move. Instead, she looked instinctively at Kael. Her father gave a small nod. "You may accept it." Only then did she step forward, taking the pouch with both hands. "Thank you, Alpha Ashbourne." "You're very welcome." She loosened the drawstring with carefully before tipping the contents into her palm. A delicate silver pendant rested there. It was shaped like a crescent moon, its surface engraved with tiny patterns that shimmered wh

I was all alone outside, sitting on the cold floor, with my white dress now brown. On a night I should have been with my mate, the future Alpha. "It's time" my newly found friend Mira informed me. I've waited for this night for so long, I've been on a strict diet, having to eat those very tasteless meals. I barely slept. Not because I was afraid. At least, that was what I kept telling myself. The truth was far less flattering. I was anxious. Anxious about seeing Vera. Anxious about seeing Manda. Anxious about walking back into a house that had never truly felt like home. By the time morning

I thought long and hard about the marriage proposal. For days, I had turned it over in my mind from every possible angle. The council. The pack. The responsibilities that would come with becoming Luna. None of it was a decision to be taken lightly. The truth was, I wasn't walking into t
