I turned back toward the door, hand hovering near the handle. My heart pounded hard. I shook my head. "It's her fault. She was never meant to be here."

The words sat heavy. They made it worse. I grabbed the handle, pulled the door open fast. No one there. The spot where she stood looked empty. Guilt hit me square in the chest. I wanted to go after her, call her name. Then Frank appeared on the stairs, rubbing his eyes.
