LOGINTessa’s pulse quickened as the silence stretched between them.
His touch was gentler now, but the weight of his actions still pressed down on her chest.
She should have pulled away. She should have stood her ground.
But the contradiction in his eyes, rage warring with something that looked dangerously like longing, kept her in place.
Raymond leaned closer, his breath brushing her lips. This time, Tessa turned her face just slightly, his mouth grazed the corner of her cheek instead of claiming her.
This time, his kiss wasn’t harsh or domineering. It was soft. Needy. For the first time, Tessa felt a flicker of vulnerability in him, something raw that unsettled her.
She froze beneath him, unresponsive, unwilling to give in. But then he pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. His voice was barely a whisper.
“Please, Tessa… kiss me.”
The words startled her. Raymond Anderson, who had never begged for anything, was asking. Almost pleading.
Before she could find her resolve, his lips brushed hers again, hesitant this time, searching.
His hand skimmed her ear in a trembling caress, and despite herself, Tessa felt her body soften.
Against her will, she kissed him back, slowly, cautiously.
A heavy sigh escaped him, as though he’d been holding his breath for years. For the first time in their marriage, she felt him loosen and kissed her more passionately.
—
By the time they finally pulled apart, both were breathless. Raymond held her gaze and then bathed her with soft forehead kisses and a gentle caress, before collapsing right on top of her.
“Thank you.” he murmured, almost inaudible. “Thank you.”
Tessa wasn’t sure if she’d heard him right. Exhaustion dragged her under before she could dwell on it.
—
She woke to hunger gnawing at her stomach the next morning. Lying still, she stared at the ceiling, her body aching in ways that confirmed it hadn’t been a dream.
She had slept with the man she planned to divorce.
A bitter laugh escaped her throat. She dragged herself into the bathroom, letting scalding water beat against her skin as though it could wash away regret.
But no amount of scrubbing could erase the truth, she had betrayed herself.
—
By the time she came downstairs, Raymond was in the living room, a newspaper open in his hands.
Her pulse spiked, but she steeled herself, reminding her heart of what her head already knew.
There’s no shame here. No defeat. We both gave in. But my decision hasn’t changed, I will still divorce him.
She straightened her shoulders, nodded at the servants’ greetings, settled at the dining table. And started eating in silence.
She didn’t look up neither did he spare him a world, but she felt his gaze dart to her again and again. She ignored him. It was safer that way.
When she finally found the courage to look his way fully, Tessa caught the faint smirk tugging at Raymond’s lips.
She instantly knew why, it was his long-sleeved shirt that she wore, with its high collar.
She was covering the love bites he had deliberately left across her skin like chains.
His snort of amusement carried across the room. Tessa paused only a fraction of a second before resuming her meal, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
Raymond almost groaned at her indifference. Then his phone rang.
He scowled but answered. Tessa’s hand froze when she heard the voice at the other end.
“Ray, I’m so nervous about the function tomorrow,” Danielle Greene’s breathy laugh came through, sweet and girlish. “I’m literally restless.”
Tessa’s chest tightened. Danielle, the actress Raymond had made into a star. The woman everyone knew he favored.
His tone shifted instantly, turning gentle, soothing. “It’s okay, Danielle. You’ll be fine. I’ll pick you up myself and take you to the event.”
Danielle’s delighted giggle chimed from the speaker. “That’s comforting. I can’t wait to see you, Ray.”
Tessa stared down at her plate, her grip tightened around her fork. She had suddenly lost her appetite.
So, this is the man I gave up everything for.
Tessa had heard enough. Danielle’s sugary voice was like acid in her veins, and she refused to sit there listening to their flirtation any longer. She pushed herself off the bed, ready to walk away, but as though he saw it coming, Raymond stood up in time and blocked her exit with his huge muscular frame.
“I need to leave?” Tessa said gently.
Her outburst carried through the phone, and on the other end Danielle fell silent for a beat. When she finally spoke, her tone was laced with amusement.
“Is that Mrs. Anderson I hear?” she purred. “Raymond, why don’t you bring her to the event tomorrow? People already whisper about us, you know. They’ll start to think we’re getting married.”
Tessa’s gaze cut to Raymond, ice cold. She knew Danielle’s games too well, little barbs meant to humiliate, to remind her that she was nothing more than the invisible wife. He had never once taken her to an event. Not once.
And then Raymond’s voice shattered her certainty.
“Alright,” he said evenly, his eyes locked on hers. “I’ll bring her.”
Tessa’s stomach dropped. Danielle’s laughter faltered into a sharp intake of breath.
“What?” she snapped, the sweetness gone. She hadn’t expected him to agree. Her petty jab was supposed to sting Tessa, not backfire.
But Raymond didn’t flinch. He kept staring at Tessa, his lips curving into a faint, knowing smile.
“You’re right, Danielle,” he drawled. “I hardly bring Mrs. Anderson anywhere. That will change. James will pick you up tomorrow instead. Sleep well.”
The line went dead, and Raymond pocketed his phone. His eyes never left hers.
“Tomorrow,” he whispered, voice silk over steel, “you’ll smile for the cameras. And they’ll never know you begged me for a divorce.
Danielle had always believed that bad news was something that happened to other people. Not her.She had spent a good part of her life, surviving hurt and protecting herself from being hurt by other people. She could care less about them being hurt in the process.Again, she was Danielle Hart. The woman brands fought over. The woman magazines wanted on their covers. The woman whose face could sell almost anything.Or at least that was what she believed.Until that morning, when her phone started ringing continuously and didn't stop.At first, she ignored it. She was getting ready for a shoot when the first call came in.Then another, and another. At first, it was her manager, then her assistant and publicist amongst others. She could remember frowning as she admired her reflection in the mirror."What now?"She picked up the call from her manager first and the moment she answered, she knew something was wrong. He didn’t even say hello."Danielle."Her manager sounded tense.Very tense
As soon as the call ended, silence settled over the room.Tessa slowly lowered her phone and stared at nothing for a few seconds.Raymond rolled over and put his arm around her, circling her waist, then pressed his lips down her stomach.Without saying a word, Tessa leaned in so she was resting her back comfortably on the bed and cradling his head softly.“Don’t worry about Danielle.” He muttered softly. “She won’t hurt you… or us. I won’t let her.”Then Tessa sighed. “I trust you.” Earning her a grunt and another deep kiss, this time longer."So you're really okay with him coming over?" Tessa asked after a brief pause.Raymond glanced down at her."I mean..."He scratched the back of his neck."It's going to be a little awkward."Tessa laughed softly."A little?""A lot," he admitted. That earned him another laugh."Now don’t judge me, but watching someone who used to be my rival step up to demystify a case I’ve been trying to solve for years.""He was never your rival Ray and you k
The shrill ringtone cut through the quiet room, making both Tessa and Raymond stirr at the same time.Tessa groaned softly and reached for the bedside lamp, blinking against the sudden light. The clock beside her bed read 5:02 a.m.Raymond pushed himself up on one elbow and frowned."Babe, who's calling by this time?"Tessa shrugged."I wish I knew."She grabbed her phone from the nightstand and glanced at the screen. The moment she saw the name, she paused."Derek."Raymond saw it too.His expression changed instantly.Tessa was surprised about the call coming in that early and almost laughed at Raymond’s expression alongside. The jealousy was becoming easier and easier to spot. She answered the call and immediately placed it on speaker."Hello?""Hi, friend."Derek's cheerful voice filled the room. He was too active for that time."Been a while."Tessa smiled."Thank you. Is everything okay? Did you sleep at all? Why are you calling so early?""Haha… So many questions. Yeah, everyth
Raymond tried to chase after Tessa as she stormed into the bedroom. But she didn't look back, neither did she slow down nor acknowledge him.Instead, she walked straight into the closet and shut the door behind her.The loud bang echoed through the room stopping Raymond in his tracks. For a moment, he simply stood there, staring at the closed door. Then he cursed under his breath. He hated this.More than anything, he hated knowing that he was the reason she was upset. The first time Danielle reached out, he had wanted to tell Tessa. He really had.But then he had looked over at her sleeping peacefully beside him and changed his mind. She looked so calm, safe and happy. And the last thing he wanted was to drag Danielle's chaos back into her life.So he had convinced himself he would handle it.He planned to keep Danielle away, deal with the threats and protect Tessa from the stress of it all.At the time, it had felt like the right decision.Looking back now, it felt like the stupides
Tessa was sitting on a hammock in the background that cool evening, a book was open in her hands, but she wasn’t reading it. Her eyes kept drifting to nothing in particular, her mind racing somewhere between calm and uneasy.Raymond had been with her earlier, talking lightly, kissing her forehead before stepping out for a work call.“Don’t move,” he had said with a smile. “I’ll be back soon.”She had laughed and then protested weakly“I’m not your hostage.”He grinned and kissed her softly.“You kind of are.”And then he was gone. His second phone had been left on the table beside her and she hadn’t paid attention to it at first, until it beeped. She ignored it at first. Then it beeped again.Something in her paused and urged her to check it out.Slowly, she reached for it, she hesitated for a second and then picked it up.The screen lit up that instant and another message came in from an unknown number. And another. Her brows slowly tightened as she started reading.Tessa’s breath sl
"OMG! Raymond, you have to see this!"Tessa's voice echoed from the bathroom.Raymond practically ran in, nearly stumbling over his own feet."Jesus, woman. Don't give me a heart attack. What's wrong?" He exclaimed, his eyebrows raised in concern as he took in Tessa’s position… Hair dryer in one hand, phone in another, and an astonished look plastered on her face.Tessa grinned."Guess.""Girl, I’m literally clueless.""Come on, at least try.."Raymond folded his arms."Fine. Your blog got a new subscription?"Tessa burst out laughing."Wow. That’s actually a very horrible guess… Of all things."Raymond smirked and raised a shoulder in defiance “I mean, I told you na”She handed him her phone. The moment he read the headline, his eyes widened."Wow."Tessa nodded. The headline was bold and impossible to miss.Danielle had reportedly lost one of her biggest sponsorship deals with a leading global fashion brand. The article cited the controversy surrounding the allegations against her,
The morning light spilled through the sheer curtains in harsh, jagged stripes, carving sharp lines across the bedroom floor. Tessa’s eyes fluttered open, for a long, hesitant moment, she didn’t move. The space beside her was empty. The sheets had cooled under the morning air, leaving only the faint
The knock was soft at first, almost polite. Then came a pause, Tessa was wondering which housekeeper it was at that time until a voice that carried too much cheer for the hour came up.“Hi, Tessa,” Danielle’s words slid into the room before her full form did. Like silk, deliberately warm. “I made y
The first thing Tessa became aware of was the sound. Not just the usual sterile beeps of the machines, not the shuffling footsteps of nurses down the corridor, but breathing. Low. Uneven. Close. Her eyelids fluttered against the weight pressing them down. When she forced them open, the white light
Tessa's feet barely touched the staircase as she bolted upward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn’t stop until her bedroom door slammed shut behind her, the lock clicking into place. For a moment, she stood there in the dark, chest heaving, waiting for tears. Waiting for the collapse.
