Emilio’s warning stayed with Luciano long after the call ended.

Down the hall, Lana’s piano lesson continued. Nadia’s calm voice counted the rhythm, then gently asked her to begin again. The familiar sound should have been comforting. For a moment, it almost was.

Luciano sat at his desk, reports spread before him. He had read the same page several times without absorbing a word. His attention kept drifting to the window overlooking the gardens.

Everything outside looked normal. The vineyards stretched quietly under the morning sun. No movement, no disturbance, nothing to suggest danger.

Still, something felt wrong.

A knock broke the silence.

“Come in.”

The head of security stepped inside. His posture was steady, but there was tension in his expression. “Sir.”

Luciano set his pen aside. “What is it?”

“We’ve spotted several unidentified vehicles approaching from the eastern service road.”

Luciano frowned. “The service road?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Did they check in at the main gate?”

“No.”

“How many?”

“At least six. Possibly more.”

Luciano stood and moved to the window. In the distance, dark vehicles climbed the narrow road through the vineyards. They moved in formation, too deliberate for visitors, too coordinated to be accidental.

His expression hardened. “Raise the security level.”

"Already done, sir,” the head of security said.

"Lock the gates,” Luciano ordered.

“The front gate is secured.”

“And the service entrance?” Luciano asked.

The head of security hesitated, and Luciano knew something was wrong before the man spoke.

"We lost contact with the team at the service gate less than a minute ago."

Luciano turned sharply. “Lost contact how?”

“No response on the radio. No signal from the cameras either.”

A cold silence settled over the room.

Luciano reached for the phone on his desk, but the line was dead before he even lifted the receiver fully.

“They cut the communications,” he said quietly.

The head of security nodded. “Yes, sir.”

Luciano opened his desk drawer and took out a pistol. He had never intended to use it inside his own home.

He knew how to protect his family and how to use a weapon if he had to, but the men moving toward the house were disciplined and precise. This was no warning. It was an attack.

Before either man could speak again, a deafening explosion tore through the front of the estate. The mansion shook.

The entire structure shuddered. Glass shattered inward. Books fell from the shelves. Dust filled the air. Someone screamed.

A second later came the sharp, controlled bursts of automatic gunfire.

“They’re inside!” the head of security shouted.

Luciano was already moving. “Get everyone away from the front hall. Protect my family.”

The man nodded and rushed into the corridor, barking orders into his radio even as the static swallowed half his words.

Luciano stepped into the hallway, pistol ready.

The house had transformed in seconds. Servants ran in panic. Smoke drifted upward from the foyer. Another explosion echoed through the structure, followed by more gunfire, closer now.

His security team was falling back.

“Nadia!”

He rounded the corner just as she came out of the music room, Lana clutched tightly against her chest. The little girl had gone pale, her face buried against her mother’s shoulder, her small hands gripping Nadia’s dress.

“Papa...” Her voice trembled.

Luciano reached them in seconds. He cupped Lana's cheek, forcing himself to stay calm even as the sounds of the attack grew louder behind them.

"It's all right, sweetheart."

Lana shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "I'm scared."

“I know.”

Another burst of gunfire echoed through the hall, closer this time. Nadia glanced toward the front of the house, then back at Luciano.

“They’re inside.”

Luciano listened for a moment. Heavy footsteps. Shouted commands. Another gunfire near the grand staircase. His security team was falling back. They were outnumbered, and the attackers had already breached the estate and cut every line of communication.

His eyes moved to Nadia. “The study.”

Nadia understood immediately.

Without another word, they moved quickly down the corridor. Luciano kept one arm around Lana, the pistol steady in his other hand. Another explosion shook the house. Somewhere below, a voice cried out, then fell silent.

Luciano tightened his hold on his daughter. “I’ve got you.”

Lana buried her face against him. "I don't want the bad men."

His heart clenched. "You don't have to think about them."

They reached the study. Luciano locked the door behind them.

He crossed quickly to the window and pulled back the heavy velvet curtain. Behind it was a narrow recess built into the thick stone wall during an earlier renovation, hidden from view and known only to a trusted few. It was just large enough for a child to crouch inside.

Luciano knelt and gently helped Lana inside.

She looked around the small space, confused. "Are we playing hide-and-seek?"

He forced a small smile. “Yes.”

Her eyes searched his face. “Can I win?”

"You can." He cupped her cheeks gently. "But you have to follow the rules."

She nodded, trying very hard to be brave. “What are the rules?”

“No matter what you hear, and no matter who calls your name, you stay here until Uncle Emilio comes for you.”

She hesitated. “Even if you or Mama call me?”

For a moment, Luciano couldn’t answer.

Then he nodded. “Even then.”

She studied him, then slowly held out her little finger. “I promise.”

A sharp ache passed through him. He hooked his finger around hers. “Me too.”

Nadia knelt beside them and joined their fingers together, just as they had done that morning.

“Now it’s forever,” Lana whispered.

Nadia kissed her forehead, holding back tears. “We love you more than anything.”

“I love you too,” Lana said softly.

Footsteps thundered outside the study. Luciano lowered the curtain, concealing the recess completely.

He stood and helped Nadia to her feet. Their eyes met. No words were needed. Everything they had built, their life, their home, their daughter, now depended on what happened next.

Luciano took her hand. “I’m sorry.”

She squeezed it gently. “You gave us a beautiful life.”

A heavy blow struck the door. The hinges groaned.

Luciano stepped in front of her, raising the pistol. Nadia stayed close behind him, one hand pressed against his back.

“I’m not leaving your side,” she said quietly.

“You never have.”

The door burst inward.

Luciano fired once, then again. The first attacker in the doorway staggered back. A second shot forced another behind the doorframe.

For the briefest moment, everything stopped. Then more armed men poured into the room.

Gunfire erupted. Bullets ripped through the walls. Wood splintered. Glass shattered across the floor as the air filled with smoke and the sharp scent of gunpowder.

“Down,” he said.

Luciano kept firing, controlling each shot, forcing hesitation. But there were too many of them.

He backed Nadia toward the desk, keeping himself between her and the doorway. Another burst struck the bookcase, sending volumes crashing to the floor.

Then his pistol clicked empty. The sound was final. The attackers surged forward.

Without hesitation, Luciano stepped in front of Nadia, shielding her with his body as bullets tore through the room.

Behind the curtain, Lana crouched inside the narrow recess. Her eyes were squeezed shut, her hands pressed tightly over her ears.

She did not scream.

She did not move.

She kept her promise.

The private hospital suite was quiet once more.Lana lay against the pillows, her skin still pale, her eyes heavy with the lingering effects of the sedative. Even in rest, there was tension in her face, like her mind refused to fully let go.Emilio had not moved from her side since she arrived. He watched her quietly for a moment, noticing how she kept fighting sleep.“You don’t have to stay awake,” he said at last, his voice low and steady. “The antidote is working. You’ll feel weak for a while, that’s all.”He adjusted the blanket over her shoulders with careful hands, an almost uncharacteristic gentleness. “Rest. I’ll be here.”Lana turned her head slightly toward him. The woman’s words from earlier still lingered in her mind, sharp and persistent, refusing to fade. She wanted to ask. The questions pressed against her tongue, but she didn’t.Instead, she gave a small nod. “Okay.”Across the room, Carissa had been watching in silence. After a moment, she stepped closer. “You’ve been

Inside the ladies’ room, Lana’s breathing slowed as the sedative took hold. The world around her blurred at the edges, sound thinning into something distant and unreal. Her knees weakened, and she barely registered the moment her body gave in.Outside, the woman who had followed her in left without urgency. She straightened her posture, composed and unremarkable, and stepped back into the corridor. A passing guard gave her a brief, polite glance. She returned it with a calm nod and continued on her way.Within seconds, she was lost in the flow of guests. No one remembered her face.A faint, satisfied smile touched her lips as she disappeared into the crowd. Her task had never been to abduct Lana Vitale or to kill her. It had been simpler, and more dangerous. To plant doubt. A question that would not fade once it took root.Several minutes passed.Inside the ballroom, the orchestra shifted into a softer piece. Crystal glasses clinked, conversations rose and fell in elegant rhythm, and

The second waltz drifted through the ballroom beneath the crystal chandeliers, its gentle melody carrying couples across the polished marble floor.Nicolo led Lana with easy confidence. “Relax,” he said lightly.“I am trying,” she replied, though her shoulders remained tense. He glanced at her posture and chuckled. "You look like you're getting ready for a boxing match, not a dance. I value my life too much to get elbowed in the ribs.”She laughed. "Good. I'd hate to ruin a face that handsome."The joke eased the tension between them. Little by little, she stopped overthinking and let the music guide her. To her surprise, the steps came naturally. Her balance was steady, her timing effortless.Nicolo noticed it too. "You're a natural," he said.Lana shook her head. "I wouldn't go that far.""I would."After a moment, his gaze drifted across the ballroom. “You know... half the room has been watching you all night.”Lana frowned slightly. “No, they haven’t.”“They have,” he said simply.
