Chapter 3

Autor: Dream Seeker
After all the endless dragging around, I felt myself starting to run a fever.

Valen was the first to notice that something was off with me. He pressed his palm against my forehead, then pulled out a thermometer to check my temperature.

“103.6 degrees? Sera, you really know how to cause trouble for us.” He let out a heavy sigh.

Chloe walked into the room, looking somewhat worried. “Maybe we should cancel today’s itinerary. Sera is burning up so badly; it’s too dangerous to leave her alone at the hotel.”

Valen hesitated.

I forced a faint smile. “Don’t skip it on my account. You guys should go.”

“Are you sure? But your fever is so high…” Chloe brought over a mug of hot tea. “Sera, take some fever reducers first.”

I took the pills from her and swallowed them down.

Watching me finish the medication, Valen glanced down at his phone. “The tour guide is already here. It’s too late to cancel now anyway.”

“Sera, I’m leaving the medicine right here. Remember to take it. We’ll be back soon.”

With that, Valen and Chloe left.

Under the heavy fog of the medication, I managed to sleep for a little while. When I finally blinked my eyes open, they still hadn’t returned. I called the hotel front desk and ordered a bowl of warm chicken broth.

While waiting, I opened social media. Two photos instantly stabbed right into my eyes.

Valen and Chloe had taken photos in the same spot, striking identical poses. My fingers trembled slightly.

I tapped directly into Valen’s profile.

“And we’re off! I’m definitely going to get better shots than Chloe!”

“Managed to catch the northern lights with lucky Chloe.”

“The lonely black sand beach. Thank goodness the princess was here with me.”

Princess... A sweet little nickname I didn’t even know existed.

Beneath the post, a mutual friend had left a comment: “Hey Valen, where’s the wife? Why didn’t she tag along?”

Valen had left a blunt, simple reply: “She’s just unlucky. Ran a fever, so she’s stuck lounging at the hotel.”

The broth arrived, and I set my phone down, using the spoon to slowly stir the steaming liquid.

The year we graduated from high school, I had come down with a massive fever. Valen had been absolutely frantic back then. He had personally cooked the chicken noodle soup I craved, blowing on it to cool it down before feeding me spoon by spoon.

During those two days of fever, he stubbornly dragged me to the hospital, practically demanding that the doctor admit me for an overnight stay. It had left me completely amused.

On the walk back home, he carried me on his back, looking incredibly sullen. I leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss right behind his ear.

“Alright, look at me. I’m totally fine.”

He had grumbled softly, “But my heart aches for you.”

I swallowed the cooled broth, feeling a tiny shred of my strength return.

Right then, they walked back into the room.

“Sera, look at this! Valen took a photo of me and made my face look absolutely massive!” Chloe thrust her phone directly in front of my face.

On the screen was a selfie of the two of them. Chloe stood right in front while Valen held up the phone with one hand, snapping the shot.

My eyes began to sting. Back in our school days, before selfie sticks were a thing, we used to take photos in that same stance. We even had an entire photo wall back home filled with memories taken in that very pose.

Unable to stop my voice from trembling, I practically fled the room. “I’m feeling really sick. I’m going to go lie back down.”

The space outside my bedroom door went dead silent.

A moment later, Valen walked in. He reached out his hand to test my temperature against his knuckles. “It’s down.”

I leaned my head slightly to the side, dodging his touch. His hand hovered frozen in mid-air for a second before he pulled it back with a look of pure exasperation.

“Sera, even if you’re sick, you shouldn’t act out this terribly.”

I snapped my head up to look at him. “I’m acting out?”

“Chloe saw that you couldn’t join us, so she specifically tried to share the photos to make you feel included. Who exactly are you throwing a tantrum at?

“You’re the one who insisted on coming to Iceland in the first place. We flew all the way out here to keep you company, and now you turn around and flip over nothing.

“Seraphina Winters, can you grow up and be a little reasonable for once?”

I stared at him, utterly stunned.

“That’s enough.” Chloe walked into the room out of nowhere, gently pulling on Valen’s sleeve. “Valen, stop talking. It’s my fault anyway…”

“Don’t speak up for her,” Valen said, his face darkening with irritation. “She’s the one who didn’t bundle up enough and froze herself into a fever. Did anyone blame her for it? Just because you’re uncomfortable doesn’t mean the entire world has to revolve around you and cater to your every whim.”

Valen grabbed Chloe by the wrist.

“Let’s go. Let her stay here and think about her attitude!”

Chloe cast a worried glance back at me before following Valen straight out of the room.

The door slammed shut with a deafening thud.

  • When the Wind Blows, She Never Looks Back   Chapter 10

Rain pursued me for nearly two years. He chased me from Seattle all the way back to our hometown and stayed by my side from my internship days until I transitioned into a full-time position. My mom constantly remarked that he was infinitely more dependable than Valen ever was; my dad remained tight-lipped and offered no official opinion.Yet, every single time Rain came over for dinner, my dad would always sneakily whip up an extra dish or two. There was one evening when Rain had to work late at the office, so I headed home alone. When my dad set the table and noticed a spare set of utensils and a glass sitting empty, he froze for a few seconds before quietly putting them away. After that night, he never laid out a spare place setting in advance again. But whenever Rain did show up, a fresh, extra side of roasted nuts would magically appear on the table. One winter, I came down with a severe fever and couldn’t make it to work.Rain called my phone repeatedly. When I didn’t answer,

Six months later, I returned home—except this time, I had a permanent little shadow trailing right behind me.“Sera, where am I crashing tonight?”“Sera, let me carry your bags for you.”I walked ahead, a mix of mild exasperation and fondness washing over me.Rain Beckett was a guy I had met down in Seattle. We had both just graduated from college and, as it turned out, actually grew up in the same hometown. We hit it off almost instantly. Because he was a few months younger than me, he used it as an absolute excuse to follow me around all day, constantly calling me his “favorite senior.”Rain chattered relentlessly as he followed me right into the residential courtyard.“Wow, Sera, there are so many trees around your neighborhood.”“Sera, how old do you think that tree is?”“Sera—”I brought my steps to a sudden halt.Valen was standing beneath that same old scholar tree right outside my apartment building. He had leaned down quite a bit, and there was a tiny, jagged nick on

I didn’t cast another glance in his direction as I headed straight back inside. The moment I pushed the front door open, I found my mom and dad pressed flat against the balcony windows, peering down into the courtyard with everything they had. My dad was already muttering a string of curses under his breath.“That kid honestly has the nerve to show his face here!“He’s been standing under our building for twenty minutes now, putting on a total pity party!“Let me tell you, when your old man was chasing your mother back in the day, I was never this pathetic!”My mom chimed in from the side, cutting him off effortlessly. “When your father tried to pursue me, I chased him away on day one. Later, he tried to corner me at the entrance of the department store downtown, so I literally slipped out the emergency exit to escape him.”“Why on earth are you bringing that up in front of our daughter?!”“You’re the one who started boasting first.”I slipped off my house shoes, walked into th

After lounging around the house as a total couch potato for a week, my limited-time status as the pampered family favorite officially expired. My parents began to find everything I did annoying.“Just look at you—you don’t wash the dishes, you don’t make your bed, all you do is lay on the sofa all day,” my dad grumbled, mopping the floor as he aggressively pushed the mop right past my feet. I hurriedly lifted my legs out of his way.My mom sat nearby, mindlessly eating potato chips and adding fuel to the fire. “I told you yesterday we shouldn’t spoil this girl. Look at her, it’s only been a week and her true colors are already showing.”I squeezed my throw pillow tightly and fired back with absolute confidence, “You guys were the ones who told me to come home and relax! Mom, your exact words were that you were going to help me gain back every single pound I lost.”My dad let out a soft chuckle. He mopped a few more strokes before he couldn’t help but chime in again, “Sweetheart, w

I canceled every single hotel reservation for the remainder of the trip.I wasn’t about to play the saint anymore; they could figure out their own accommodations for the rest of their stay.I vividly remember our freshman year of college when Chloe looked at me with those timid, fragile eyes. Her mother had stood right beside her, patting my hand as she pleaded, “Our Chloe has always been in fragile health. Please look out for her.”From that exact moment on, I took it upon myself to shield and protect her. I even explicitly told Valen to look out for her, too.Who could have guessed that all that looking out for her would land her straight into his heart? My phone buzzed repeatedly with bank notifications confirming the incoming refunds. Staring at the dollar amounts, a wave of regret washed over me. I shouldn’t have booked such high-end luxury hotels in the first place. What a massive waste.I immediately sent two thousand dollars of the refunded money to my mom, adding a memo

The moment I got back home, I collapsed onto the soft bed my mom, Margaret Winters, had freshly made for me.My parents followed me into the room, looking at me with deep concern written all over their faces. “Sera, weren’t you supposed to be in Iceland for two weeks with that Valen kid? It’s only been a few days. Why are you back by yourself?”I buried my face in the pillow. A heavy wave of exhaustion crashed over me, leaving me without the energy to speak.Arthur Winters, my dad, started getting anxious. “Sweetheart, did that Valen kid do something to you? Just say the word, and your old man will go break his legs!”I let out a soft laugh. Shaking off the crushing weight from my heart, I could finally laugh from the absolute depths of my soul.“Dad, calm down.” I rolled over and stared up at the ceiling.Pasted right above me were the glow-in-the-dark stars Valen and I had bought together when we were kids, the ones that used to illuminate the room whenever the lights went out.
