Chapter 4

Author: Lolly
"I've always been the one handling comms on the shared frequency. If you open an unauthorized backup line, you'll interfere with the helicopter's radar positioning!"

He lunged for the phone. I sidestepped him.

"Interfere with positioning? I'm contacting base to pull in a backup search-and-rescue chopper from another sector. Since our great team leader's decided to fly out with his protégée, I figured I'd better find my own way to stay alive."

Chris's face went ashen. If I got through to base, everything he'd been hiding — deliberately stalling my rescue to get Angelina out first — would come out into the open.

A deafening roar sounded above the cave mouth, and the rope ladder dropped down. There was no time left.

Something hard and cruel flashed across Chris's eyes. He grabbed Angelina's arm.

"Angie, hold on tight. Go, now!"

She'd been sobbing about being scared a second ago; she climbed faster than anyone. Chris stood by the ladder and glanced back at me once. There wasn't a trace of guilt in that look — only the cold resolve of a man trying to bury the truth.

"Kate, you can blame yourself for this. You're too smart. And too selfish."

He said it low, then hauled himself up fast. Just as he was about to climb clear of the cave mouth, he stopped. He raised one foot in its heavy snow boot, aimed it at the load-bearing ice pillar teetering at the entrance, and kicked it as hard as he could.

A crack tore through the cave with a sound like thunder.

"Professor Hanks, what are you doing?!"

Todd's terrified scream was swallowed by the roar of collapsing ice. Tons of ice and snow came crashing down. To stop me from reaching that ladder — and to cut off any signal I might send for help — Chris had triggered a localized avalanche and sealed our only way out.

White swallowed my vision in an instant. Then came the suffocating dark.

The shockwave knocked me off my feet, snow burying me past the waist. In the darkness, Todd broke down sobbing.

"We're finished! We're going to die! Why would Professor Hanks do this?!"

I dragged in ragged breaths. The cold was slowly wringing every trace of air from my lungs, and yet, strangely, my mind had gone perfectly calm. I understood then — once a person sees the full truth of being thrown away, there aren't even any tears left.

The comments lit up again in the dark.

[Don't panic! Kate's got another route!]

[The underground river entrance is thirty meters to your back-right!]

[Core data chip! Confirm the chip's still with you first!]

I switched on my headlamp and pulled a silver metal case, wrapped in layer after layer of insulation, out of the bottom of my pack. Inside was the one and only core data chip from this entire expedition. Chris had always assumed the data lived on his own workstation. He had no idea that without my top-level password, everything he'd hauled home was just dead metal. Force it open, and the data would wipe itself in three seconds flat.

I got to my feet and knocked the snow off myself. Todd grabbed my pant leg, sobbing so hard he could barely speak.

"Mrs. Hanks, please save me! I shouldn't have taken their side back there. I was wrong!"

I looked down at him. He'd been stupid and hateful. But he hadn't been the one who kicked that pillar.

"If you want to live," I said coldly, "shut up and stay close."

Todd nodded like his life depended on it — because it did. I followed the route the scanner had mapped, heading deeper into the cave toward the underground river.

[Hang in there! The station's only two hundred meters ahead!]

[Don't give up! In the original storyline, Kate died right here, two hundred meters short!]

[Eat the chocolate now! No point saving it if there's no one left to save it for!]

I tore open the chocolate bar Chris had shoved at me, and bit off half. The sweetness melted on my tongue, but all I could taste was bitterness. That chocolate had been meant as bait to keep me calm and compliant. Now, it was just fuel to keep me alive.

Three hours later, I finally spotted the ventilation shaft of the abandoned multinational research station. A rusted iron grate was wedged tight against the ice wall.

Todd was nearly at the point of collapse. "It won't budge. We're not getting in..."

I didn't waste breath answering. I pulled out the one ice pick I had left and drove it into the gap between the grate and the ice wall. The screech of metal on metal set my teeth on edge. My palms had already gone numb from the cold, and every time I put weight into the pull, it felt like my wrists were splitting apart at the bone.

[The career glow-up is just as satisfying!]I smiled, shut off the display, and turned back to the next round of work.…At year's end, as the new lead of the expedition, I brought my team aboard the icebreaker and set out for the polar region once more. This time, there was no two-faced hypocrite playing favorites. No sniveling little schemer putting on a show of innocence. Everyone around me had clear eyes and steady hands — the kind of people you could actually trust to watch your back. The new team members were sharp and well-trained. Some checked equipment, some verified supplies, others ran through the emergency evacuation routes again and again.Todd had come along too. After the incident, he'd cooperated with the investigation on his own, testified honestly, and admitted that Chris had misled him back in the cave and that he'd joined in blaming me. Afterward, he'd asked to step down from the core team and started over from the most basic logistics work. Before we set out

"—the Kate who loved you was the one you froze to death in that cave. YOU killed her."Chris staggered and dropped to his knees at the mouth of the storm drain. Ignoring the filthy runoff, he shoved his arm in up to the shoulder, desperate to fish the lighter back out. His fingernails tore and bled from scraping at the pipe, but he came up with nothing.Security carried him off, and he was still shouting my name over and over. I didn't look back. The comments drifted by, slow and quiet.[Good.][That hurt him worse than any slap could have.][Kate's really free now.]…Chris's academic fraud scandal was confirmed beyond any doubt. Not only was he stripped of his professorship, he now faced a massive breach-of-contract settlement. The academic connections he'd once been so proud of turned on him overnight, avoiding him like the plague.Worse still, investigators found multiple records on his personal computer showing repeated attempts to bypass security and illegally duplicate

By the time I left the National Convention Center, reporters had swarmed the street outside so thick you couldn't move. Investigators led Chris away. Angelina was taken into custody by police on the spot, suspected of sabotaging rescue communications equipment. As they put her in the squad car, she was still screaming his name. Chris didn't even turn his head.A line of gold text drifted across my vision.[Satisfaction unlocked: the scumbag's career collapses, the schemer gets arrested on the spot.][But it's not over yet. Chris still has a whole world of regret coming!][Kate, don't give him too much screen time. Three days is plenty!]Back at the research center, I got straight to work rebuilding the core data team. The project couldn't stop. Those hundred-year climate secrets buried under the ice didn't deserve to be lost just because two terrible people had made a mess of things.Over the next three days, Chris camped outside the research center every single day. On the f

I pulled a stack of documents out of my briefcase and dropped them on the table. On top was the data analysis report Angelina had submitted before joining the team."Did you really think you'd covered every angle?"Angelina's crying cut off instantly. I flipped the file open."You deliberately hid your physical exam results and lied about a history of asthma — all to win Chris's sympathy and, when the moment counted, secure yourself a seat on the rescue chopper. And here's the worse part: that core code you turned in, the code you claimed to have written entirely on your own—" I paused a while before continuing, "—is stolen garbage, lifted wholesale from an overseas open-source database and localized."Angelina's face went bloodless."That's a lie! I typed every line of that myself!"I kept my voice level. "Whether it's a lie or not, the technical review team has already issued their final determination. Your code comments still had the original author's initials left in them."

I took half a step back, and two security guards immediately moved to block Chris from me."What I've been through?" I said, my voice flat. "Weren't you busy in your office at the base, trying to crack my data password while you got ready to turn me into a convenient martyr for your acceptance speech?"Something in Chris's face went rigid. I turned to face the room."Of course Professor Hanks couldn't open the data. What he had on his workstation was only a sync cache, not the core source file. Full authorization has belonged to me, and only me, from the very beginning. I used an irreversible encryption algorithm designed for extreme field conditions — force it open, and the data destroys itself automatically."A low murmur rippled through the panel of experts.Chris's lips trembled. "Kate, you think ruining me means you take all the credit for this project?"I raised my hand. A recording played for the entire room. Chris's voice, cold and flat, rang clear through the hall."If

The most prestigious annual polar-expedition honors gala in the country was held at the National Convention Center. Chris stood in a crisp black suit, a white mourning flower pinned to his chest. Angelina, in a formal gown, stuck close to his side. The big screen behind them looped what Chris had billed as the last footage of me — carefully edited to keep only a silhouette from the moment supplies were handed out, casting himself as a tragic hero who'd made an agonizing sacrifice for the greater good.Camera flashes from the press nearly blinded the room."Professor Hanks, given the breakthrough this polar project has achieved, do you have anything you'd like to say to the late Ms. Kate Connery?"Chris took the microphone, drew a slow breath, and let his eyes redden right on cue."Kate wasn't just my wife — she was an irreplaceable part of this project. She left the chance of survival to a younger team member and left the glory to me. I'm standing here today to accept, on her beha
