Chapter 2

Author: Ingrid Pure
I looked at the expensive silk pajamas the thief was wearing and the collection of limited-edition designer sneakers neatly arranged in the shoe rack by the entrance. My anger curdled into a cold, absurd calmness.

I laughed from sheer rage. "A beggar? Excuse me, miss, but it seems your family and education never taught you about theft. Well, stealing someone else's property is called theft under the law. And under morality, it is called shamelessness.

"Are all those designer brands you wear bought with whatever scraps of decency you have left?"

"Hey! Watch your mouth!" she snapped, her expression darkening instantly. "Theft? When did you ever see me stealing? I just picked up the wrong delivery. People mix up deliveries every day. You're the one being dramatic, installing trackers and everything. How disgusting can you be?"

"You picked up the wrong delivery?" I held up my phone, opened my order history, and questioned, "I've had four deliveries stolen this week alone! And every single time, you conveniently avoid the cheap stuff and go straight for mine?

"Besides, you live in this private dorm, while my deliveries are dropped off at the delivery rack outside the regular men's dorm building. You crossed half the campus late at night to 'accidentally pick up' a guy's delivery? Do you take me for an idiot?"

Stumped by my barrage of questions, she struggled for words, and her expression turned extremely ugly. "My name is Francine Merrick. My father is Bill Merrick, the chairman of Merrick Corporation."

She stepped forward, jabbing her finger hard into my chest. "You want to talk to me about law? About morality? Well, I'll have you know that there is nothing in this school that I can't handle!

"So what if I ate a few of your meals? I'll pay you 1,000 dollars, alright? That's enough chicken curry to feed a broke college student like you for a year! Take the money and get the hell out of my sight!"

With that, she pulled a wad of cash from her bag and flung it right at my face. Hundred-dollar bills scattered through the air as she looked down at me arrogantly, her eyes full of malice.

I looked at the money on the floor, then back at her arrogant face. I crouched down and said, "Francine Merrick, was it?"

The corner of her lips was about to curl into a mocking smile, but all I did was simply tie my shoelace and straighten back up.

"The money is clean," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "But you're filthy. Keep it for yourself. I don't want a single cent in compensation. All I want is a public apology."

Francine's smile froze on her face. "Declan Cordery, don't push your luck! Trust me, I can see to it that you don't last a day at Greyfriars!"

"It doesn't matter whether I trust you. But what's certain is that you're about to pay the price for your actions," I said, looking at her and pointing at her stomach. "You ate most of that chicken curry, didn't you?"

She froze. "What do you mean?"

"I mean I laced it with medical-grade emodin and croton oil. By my calculations, the effects should be kicking in right about now."

As if to prove my words, Francine's face instantly flushed before it quickly paled, and then it turned a sickly shade of green. She clutched her stomach with both hands, and her body began to shake.

Under her horrified gaze, I calmly dialed 911. "Hello, police? I've caught a serial thief red-handed. But she seems to be having some kind of attack right now. Yes, probably from eating something that's gone bad…"

Francine's eyes widened. She pointed at me, unable to speak for a long moment. Then she let out a pained groan and bolted toward the bathroom.

From behind the door came her hysterical roar. "Declan Cordery! I'm going to kill you! I swear I'll kill you!"

I stood at the doorway, listening to the commotion inside.

This was only the beginning.

The auditorium doors swung open again. Several police officers in uniform walked in, accompanied by Hunter and several members of the Disciplinary Board."Mr. Bill Merrick, we have received a report that you, in collusion with certain university officials, have been involved in fabricating evidence, destroying surveillance footage, and engaging in improper exchanges of benefits in an attempt to interfere with the course of justice."Harry produced an arrest warrant. "Please come with us."Richard swayed and slumped limply into his chair. The reporters below went completely wild, frantically snapping away on their cameras.I stood on the stage and slowly let out a long breath.Francine, the elaborate trap you so carefully designed ultimately became the grave that buried you and your father. It felt pretty damn good.…The tide of public opinion turned faster than a tornado. Once the surveillance video was verified by the police and released online, the keyboard warriors who ha

I walked back to the dorm with the USB drive tightly clenched in my hand. So it turned out that this whole setup had a larger power structure behind it.The school, eager to cover up some sordid scandal, or maybe to curry favor with Merrick Corporation's investments, hadn't hesitated to make me the scapegoat to quell this murder case triggered by "delivery theft".The next morning, public backlash hit its peak. Merrick Corporation's hired trolls flooded the internet with posts. Several influencers with massive followings even published long articles, digging into my family background and trying to paint me as a dark, resentful, antisocial extremist."Uncovering the Student Behind Greyfriars' Suicide Case—A Withdrawn Personality, Frequent Conflicts, and a Troubling Pattern of Behavior.""Expert Analysis: How a Troubled Student's Twisted Psychology Gradually Pushed an Innocent Young Woman Toward Death."The school took action at an alarming speed. Hunter zoomed in on the surveillance footage several times. Although the image was still somewhat grainy, every subtle movement Francine made was now clearly visible. At 3:35 am, Francine sat straddling the windowsill on the second floor. Outside the window was a 12-inch-wide decorative awning. Because of the light rain earlier, the surface of the awning was wet and slippery. She held onto the window frame with both hands and tentatively stepped one foot onto the awning.Through the close-up, I could see her face. There was no trace of despair or resolve to die. Instead, it was filled with tension, calculation, and a morbid sort of excitement. She even pulled out her phone and took a photo in the direction of the rooftop. It was later confirmed that she sent that photo to her best friend with the caption, "I'll make him regret it for the rest of his life.""Look here," Hunter said, pointing at the screen as he rewound the footage three seconds. Francine hesitated on the windows

That night, at 11:50 pm, all the lights across campus had already been turned off. I avoided the resident advisor and patrolling security guards and hurried toward the old anatomy building of the medical school. The building, due to its age, had long been abandoned and was usually completely deserted. Eerie moonlight spilled over the mottled walls, adding to the sinister atmosphere. At the end of the corridor on the second floor, a dim light glowed from an office.I pushed the door open to find a man sitting inside, intently focused on a tablet screen."You're here, Declan," he said without looking up. "I'm Hunter Steadman, a senior majoring in forensic medicine, and I'm currently interning at the Criminal Investigations Unit.""Were you the one who sent me the email?" I asked, walking up to him. "What exactly is this truth you mentioned?"Hunter turned off the tablet and looked up at me. His eyes held an almost clinical rationality. "Everyone out there thinks you drove Francine t

"It's Francine… She really jumped.""Oh my god, wasn't she just released yesterday? How could she…""I heard she had a breakdown after she went home yesterday."Whispers rippled through the crowd. Then, out of nowhere, someone shouted, "Isn't that Declan?"In an instant, every pair of eyes in the crowd locked onto me.The looks of admiration from just days ago shifted within seconds. Now, they were filled with shock, suspicion, and anger, even."That's him, isn't it? He drove a young woman to her death over a few dozen dollars' worth of delivery!""Exactly! She was already detained, and still he posted that video online to expose her. How is that any different from cyberbullying?""That's way too cruel. It was just a couple of deliveries. Did he really have to push things this far?""Now someone has lost her life. I wonder if he can even sleep at night."In the blink of an eye, I went from a hero who stood up for my own rights to a murderer who drove a student to suicide. On

"Declan Cordery, you lunatic! Are you really so hell-bent on ruining me?" Francine screamed, tears finally spilling down her face."I didn't ruin you," I said, looking at her and letting out a cold laugh. "You ruined yourself with your cheap sense of superiority and your ignorance of the law."I turned and walked out of the police station.Behind me, the interview room was filled with Deborah's sharp cries and the sound of Bill making phone calls, trying to pull whatever strings he could. But it was all too late. I believed the law would uphold my legitimate rights. And sometimes, the iron fist of the law struck faster than anyone would expect. Bill was certainly wealthy and had plenty of connections. He tried to prove that Francine had merely picked up the wrong delivery, but he missed two things. The first was that I had blurred out the faces and uploaded the video of me tracking down the thief last night to social media. The caption was simple. "Luxury cars, mansions, LV bags
