Chapter 2

Author: Eggs Tomato
I jerked my head up and stared at Liam. My ears were ringing, and my mind had gone completely blank.

While I'd been working myself to the bone to give Rachel a better life, she had given birth to another man's child.

"What's wrong, Sam?"

I fell silent. When Liam saw the look on my face, his expression changed.

"We didn't get a divorce," I said shakily as I tightened my grip around my glass.

Upon hearing this, Liam froze. As he tried to process his shock, he found himself at a loss for words.

After a long pause, he suddenly remembered something. He fumbled for his phone and frantically tapped through the screen before handing the device to me.

"Look. This is her social media feed. Are you not able to see it?"

I took the phone from him and began scrolling through Rachel's posts. The more I saw, the heavier my heart became.

Five years ago, Rachel began filling her social media page with photos of herself and another man.

In the photos, the pair embraced each other beneath falling snow and kissed amid fireworks lighting up the night sky. They also traveled and wandered through unfamiliar cities together.

Two years later, her feed transformed into an online diary of her newborn child.

From the day their daughter was born, she began to document every moment of her life on social media.

I continued scrolling with trembling fingers, but she had posted an overwhelming number of photos. It was nearly impossible for me to go through everything.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips.

I felt sick to my stomach. The feeling was unbearable. I wanted to let it all out, but I couldn't. In the end, all that remained was a lingering feeling of bitterness that refused to fade.

After piecing everything together, Liam's face darkened with fury.

"So you never got a divorce?" he snapped, looking outraged. "You were working your ass off overseas to give Rachel the best life possible. Meanwhile, she was using your money to support another man? She even gave birth to his child!"

I let out a self-mocking laugh.

I was quite possibly the stupidest man on the entire planet. She had me fooled for seven years. She'd played me for an absolute fool.

"What are you going to do now?" Liam asked.

I clenched my fists and forced myself to calm down. In a bitter voice, I declared, "I'll file for divorce and take back everything that's rightfully mine."

I was determined to take everything back. There was no way I'd let her get away with this unscathed.

After several rounds of drinks, I dragged my exhausted body home.

It had been a year since I last returned home. Back then, my company had just started to gain its footing. I had only managed to meet up with Rachel for a short while before I rushed back overseas. So, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

I repeatedly entered the passcode to the electronic lock, but each attempt was met with the same cold, mechanical voice.

"Incorrect passcode. Please try again."

After multiple failed attempts, the system automatically alerted the neighborhood security guard.

I was escorted away once again.

I showed the guard my marriage certificate and insisted that this was my home. But after he asked me a simple question, I found myself at a loss for words.

"If this is your home, why don't you know the passcode?" he asked.

I tried to come up with a suitable response, but I didn't know what I could possibly say.

Was I supposed to tell him that my wife had cheated on me?

I let out a wry laugh. In the end, I didn't say anything and got up to leave.

Just as I reached the entrance, I bumped into Rachel, who had hastily rushed over.

"Why didn't you just call me and ask for the passcode?" she asked. "What's gotten into you, Sam? You've been acting so distant ever since you came back."

"Go ahead," I replied casually, my face completely expressionless.I was actually a little curious myself. Rachel and I were already divorced. What kind of drama was Jasper trying to stir up now?The second Rachel hung up, she looked at me with a frantic look. "Sam, my daughter has a fever again. She's completely unresponsive…"At that, I curled my lips into a faint smile and said considerately, "You should hurry. You don't want to delay her treatment."Rachel flashed me a look of pure gratitude. "Sam, wait for me. We're definitely going on that date today!"I didn't say a word, nor did I nod. I just quietly shut the door.I didn't love her anymore. Why would I wait for her?Once I was fully awake, I packed my bags and made myself some lunch. After eating, I grabbed my luggage and headed to the airport alone.Right before I boarded the plane, a text from Rachel popped up. "Honey, everything is taken care of here. I'm on my way to you now. Let's go on our date!"With a blank

I continued casually, "My assets belong to me. Of course I'm taking them back."With that, I turned and walked away, completely ignoring the looks on Rachel's and Jasper's faces. On my way back to Liam's place, Rachel kept calling me. When she realized I wasn't answering, she started flooding my phone with texts."Honey, you're just joking, right?""I know you're angry, honey. But I was really just trying to repay a debt.""Please forgive me, honey. Can you just pick up the phone?""I won't help Jasper with his act anymore. Let's just go home and live our lives, okay?"The endless notifications were giving me a massive headache, so I blocked her number entirely. Then, I opened a travel app and booked a flight out of Jekovia for tomorrow afternoon. When I got back to Liam's, I filled him in on everything that had happened.Upon hearing the news, Liam laughed with delight.I handed him the management of Rachel's company to look after, sorted out a few remaining details, and th

I looked at Jasper's smug expression and let out a helpless laugh. "Hey, I'm trying to get a divorce. But Rachel is throwing a total fit, crying about how much she loves me and how she can't live without me. She flat-out refuses to divorce me. What do you want me to do about it?"With that, I turned and strolled away, leaving Jasper standing there, his face turning an angry shade of purple.I knew he would make a move soon.Sure enough, Rachel called me the very next day.Her voice was incredibly hesitant over the line. "Um, honey… Jasper's dad is hospitalized again. The doctor says it's really critical this time. Jasper told me his dad wants to see our marriage certificate. He says it'll cheer the old man up and help him recover faster."Honey, I'll sign the divorce papers for now. Once Jasper and I finish putting on this act for his dad, we can just get remarried, okay? My hands are tied here. Jasper saved my life, and I have to repay the debt. Honey, just send me your address,

Rachel's voice came through. "Honey, you finally picked up. Why are there strangers living in our house? They're saying the place belongs to them now. What's going on?""I sold the house, Rachel. And I'm going to say this one last time—we're getting a divorce," I replied impatiently while rubbing my temples. Upon hearing this, Rachel snapped. She shrieked through the phone, "I am not divorcing you, Sam Jensen! I tore the divorce papers to shreds and threw them away. I won't divorce you! "Honey, where are you? I'll come to you, okay? Let's just sit down and talk."I forced down the anger rising in my chest and kept my tone flat. "Fine."After hanging up, I called Miles and asked him to draft another copy of the divorce agreement for me to pick up.Armed with the new paperwork, I headed out alone to the cafe where I'd agreed to meet Rachel. The moment she spotted me, she waved frantically.I walked over with a blank face, sat down across from her, then slid the divorce papers o

All the emotions I had buried came rushing out in that moment. I yanked my hand out of Rachel's grip and looked at her coldly. "Rachel, do you honestly think I'm an idiot?"Do you really think I know nothing? We're literally standing in a hospital. Want me to drag you and that child actress in for a DNA test right now?"With every word I spoke, the color drained from Rachel's face.Watching her stand there, pale and trembling, I opened my mouth to say more. But before I could, she reached out and slapped me across the face with everything she had. With bloodshot eyes, her voice shook as she cried out, "Sam! I told you, there's nothing going on between Jasper and me! You just got back to Jekovia. Why do you have to be so aggressive? Didn't I tell you I'd explain everything once I got home?"I stared at Rachel, who was looking at me with red-rimmed eyes, and froze for a moment.By the time I snapped out of it, Liam had already pulled me away. He dragged me into his office and start

I became lost in my own thoughts. In the end, I didn't even realize that we'd arrived until the taxi driver called out to me.I wiped the corners of my eyes before climbing out of the car. Just as I was about to shut the door, the driver called after me and said, "There's nothing you can't overcome, young man. Sometimes, you just have to allow things to unfold on their own."His kind words caught me off guard, and a warmth spread through my chest. Once I snapped out of my daze, I thanked him with a smile. He was right—everything happened for a reason. Maybe this was simply the universe's way of testing me.I walked into the hospital and headed toward Liam's office. The moment I reached the elevators, I spotted a familiar figure. What a small world. Of all the hospitals in Astor City, I still managed to run into Rachel at this one.I didn't want to interact with her, so I decided to walk toward another elevator. But before I could do so, she abruptly turned around and made eye
