After Death

Familial Bond

Melodramatic

On New Year’s Eve, I ran after my sister, Yelena Smith, who had left the house in anger. However, a bunch of thugs dragged me into an alley. The torture ripped me apart, both inside and out, and I had been living with severe PTSD ever since. I tried to hurt myself countless times. My sister would grab my hand as I held the knife and drive it into her own body. It was as if she was punishing herself. For every cut I made, she gave herself two. Our blood would mix while she held me and cried. “Felix, please! I’m begging you. Stop hurting yourself! “I swear I’ll heal you!” After that night, my sister, who had always been careless and aimless, seemed to become a different person. She burned her racing cars, which she used to be so proud of, to ashes. She also started studying, which she used to hate. It took her five years to become a chief psychiatrist. However, just when I was finally starting to get better, I heard voices outside my door. “Miss Smith, your acting’s too convincing. If I hadn’t known the truth, I would’ve never thought that you hired those thugs. “To avenge your step brother, you’ve been interfering with Felix’s recovery with medication while guilt-tripping him with love just to make him suffer. Aren’t you being too cruel?” My sister let out a dismissive snort. “He bullied Julian like that in the past. He deserves every bit of this. “But I know my limits. Felix is still my biological brother after all. I’m just teaching him a lesson. I could never bring myself to make him end his life.” I felt like I had fallen into an ice-cold abyss. I even forgot to breathe for a moment. Everything turned out to be my sister’s punishment all along. That night, I dragged my broken body up to the rooftop. ‘Yelena, you don’t have to punish me anymore this time,’ I thought.

Chapter 1

“Felix!”

Just as I was about to fall, a sudden force dragged me back.

Yelena lunged forward and hugged me before we rolled onto the floor.

Before the sense of weightlessness left me, a sharp slap landed on my face.

My eardrums buzzed, and I covered my burning cheek.

Looking up in a daze, I saw Yelena’s teary eyes.

“Are you out of your mind?! Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?

“You ended up like this because of me. If you actually jumped, I’d end my life too!”

Her chest heaved violently. Even her wrists trembled as if she was genuinely shaken with fear.

My eyes landed on her wrist where one of her wounds had split open and started bleeding.

It resulted from an episode I had not long ago. I had tried to grab a knife, and she had accidentally cut herself while trying to stop me.

However, the words I had overheard outside the door today resurfaced.

Ultimately, it was all an act on her part.

My nose began to sting, and I stood there frozen before murmuring,

“Yelena… I didn’t want to jump.

“I just wanted you to stay with me a little longer…”

I regretted it once the words left my word.

The panic in Yelena’s eyes disappeared the second she heard what I said.

As if she remembered something, a hint of annoyance flickered in her gaze.

Then, she swung my hand away, and her voice turned cold. “How many times is this, Felix Smith?

“You clearly know that tonight is Julian’s birthday. You had to pick now to throw a tantrum and find every excuse to drag me away just to spoil things for everyone, didn’t you?”

She was too strong, and after five years, I had been worn down to nothing but skin and bones.

A single shove from her sent me crashing to the floor.

The moment my body hit the floor, a familiar searing pain shot through my legs.

It hurt so much…

My tears fell uncontrollably as I clutched my deformed legs and curled into a ball.

Five years ago, when those people pressed me for Yelena’s whereabouts, my silence enraged them.

That day, they crushed my legs repeatedly, and my legs never healed properly again.

Those memories surged in my mind, and bitterness rose like a tide in my throat.

I lay on the floor while I sobbed to the point that my whole body trembled.

Yelena froze when she saw me. When she snapped out of her daze, she immediately reached out to help me up.

She pursed her lips before she softened her tone with some awkwardness. “Don’t cry, Felix. I said all of that in anger.

“I just got too worked up. Why else would I have rushed back the moment the butler told me you weren’t in your room—”

Before she finished her sentence, a ringing phone cut her off.
