Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Summer
“From now on, this will be my private office,” Chloe announced, chin tipped up.

The smug expression on her face had no resemblance to the modest, soft-spoken intern I remembered.

“By ability?” I asked, my voice low.

I stepped forward, closing the distance between us. “You mean your ability to steal my basic app framework, change a few names, and pretend you built the whole system? Or do you just mean your ‘ability’ to look busy typing random nonsense whenever Mr. Miller walks past your desk?"

My quiet words stung, each one targeting her most sensitive spots.

These were details I’d only pieced together in hindsight.

She took advantage of the fact that I was too busy caring for my grandfather’s illness to pay close attention. She utilized her position as an intern, despite not having access to the core system, and only handled intermediate files and basic test cases.

In just a single month, she carefully created the illusion that she had 'deeply participated' in the project and even 'led' the entire system development.

The fake confidence on Chloe’s face shattered instantly, replaced by a deep flush of embarrassment.

Her breathing turned rapid, her composure unraveling.

"Y-You’re lying!” she snapped, her voice shrill, her eyes darting with panic.

She couldn’t even look me in the eye.

“You know better than anyone whether I’m making this up,” I replied, my tone staying cold. “The system you claimed to write is just a cheap copy of my original work. You just added some useless features on top to trick the bosses.”

I tilted my head, pressing the point. “Would you like me to line up your code with my original designs, side by side, and post it on a tech forum for everyone to check?”

That broke Chloe completely.

Her biggest weakness has always been a shallow technical base. She can’t handle serious scrutiny.

After all, Ethan Miller didn’t understand code. He could be fooled by surface polish.

But the tech world—the people who live and breathe code? They see everything.

Right there, Chloe’s face shifted from red to white, then white to a sickly green. Just then, her eyes caught sight of something: the old photo frame on my desk.

It was a family photo taken during a grand gathering last year. My grandfather, the most feared man in the city's underworld, stood right in the center, though in the photo he looked just like a regular, dignified older gentleman.

A flicker crossed Chloe's eyes.

“Look at this old man,” she sneered, staring at my grandfather’s picture. “No wonder he’s dying. He probably couldn't stand having a loser like you in the family.”

Suddenly, with a deliberately casual sweep, she knocked the frame off the desk.

It fell to the floor with a loud crash, shattering glass that scattered everywhere.

Chloe lurched a step forward and deliberately brought her foot down, hard, onto the broken glass and the photograph.

“Oh no, sorry, Bennett. Didn’t see it there,” she feigned innocence, grinding her heel into my grandfather's face. “But honestly, a dying old man and his pathetic family belong right here—under my shoe.”

In that instant, it felt like all the blood in my body rushed to my head. Insulting my family, the most powerful syndicate in the city, was a death sentence.

Smack!

My palm met her cheek, and the loud crack of the slap cut through the office.

Chloe’s head snapped to the side, a vivid red handprint already blooming on her cheek.

“Get out!” I shouted.

The office door flew open.

“Ms. Bennett, what the hell are you doing?!” Ethan barked.

Ethan Miller stood in the doorway, his face dark with anger. He must have been passing by and caught the scene.

Chloe wasted no time. Her inner actress came out instantly as she trembled with just the right amount of hurt and fragility.

“Mr. Miller, I-I just came to apologize to Ms. Bennett about the bonus. I didn’t know why she suddenly got so angry, and then she just hit me…”

“Bennett, you've gone too far!” Ethan roared. “The bonus decision is final. You don't get to lay a hand on a coworker just because you're jealous! She came here to be nice, and you treat her like this?”

“Apologize?” I turned to him coldly, pointing at the shattered frame and the footprints on the photo. “She insulted my family and trampled on them. That’s your idea of an apology?”

  • You Fired Me, Now Your Empire Burns   Chapter 12

The day the official corporate bankruptcy and liquidation trial concluded, I was sitting alone in a high-end, private café overlooking the city skyline. I was expecting to head back to my family’s estate to enjoy my early retirement, but a sleek, black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb, and a familiar figure stepped out.It was Arthur Brighton, the billionaire chairman of Brighton Tech.He didn't bother with empty corporate pleasantries or useless small talk. He walked straight over to my table, pulled out a chair, and sat down, placing a sleek leather folder between us.“Ms. Bennett, I assume you’ve been watching the news,” Arthur began, his eyes sharp, reflecting a deep, calculating respect. “Ethan Miller’s company is officially dead and buried. Justice has been served to those thieves, but as a businessman, I care about the reality of the damage. My company lost a massive amount of infrastructure money during that meltdown. But what breaks my heart more is the shopping app itself.”

Hearing Ethan Miller bring up his late mother Victoria and nervously whine about the tech department employees made a wave of disgust wash over me. It was the ultimate, pathetic display of weaponized guilt from a man who had never spared a single thought for anyone else's livelihood when he was sitting high and mighty in his glass office. Before my brother could even pull his weapon, the heavy double doors of the inner parlor swung open. My mother stepped out into the grand foyer.Originally, she had promised my grandfather she wouldn't interfere in family syndicate business, preferring to let her children handle their own battles. But after sitting inside and listening to Ethan’s endless, sniveling excuses—especially the disgusting way he was trying to use his dead mother to morally bankrupt her daughter—she had officially reached her boiling point. She didn't call for a bodyguard. Instead, she marched straight over, grabbed a heavy, solid wood cleaning broom leaning against the corne

The pouring rain beat mercilessly against the windshield of Ethan Miller’s car as he sped through the exclusive, heavily wooded outskirts of the city's most secure district. He had spent the last half-hour desperately using every corporate contact and tracking tool he owned to find my residential address. He expected to find a modest, middle-class suburban home or a cramped apartment building.Instead, his GPS guided him down a long, winding private road that terminated at a set of towering, monstrous iron gates.Ethan slammed on his brakes, staring through the sweeping windshield wipers in absolute, unadulterated shock. Behind the reinforced iron bars lay a massive, sprawling stone estate that looked less like a home and more like an impenetrable fortress. High-tech security cameras rotated silently along the stone walls, and spotlights cut through the dark, rainy night. This wasn't the property of a regular software engineer. This was the legendary, heavily guarded compound of the

The victorious smiles on Ethan and Chloe's faces didn't even have time to fade before they twisted into an ugly expression of unadulterated shock.Across the massive, high-definition display screens of the Brighton Tech pavilion, and on the monitors of millions of frantic beta-testers watching at home, the shopping app didn't just experience a typical lag. The exact millisecond thousands of concurrent users attempted to log into the payment and checkout gateway, a catastrophic chain reaction triggered within the core code. Every single device connected to the network instantly hit a hard, unrecoverable Blue Screen of Death. The central database servers were literally fried, screaming out a fatal infrastructure error that completely locked down Brighton Tech’s entire regional network.Ethan and Chloe stood frozen on the main stage, looking completely shell-shocked. The confident color drained from their faces in real-time, leaving them a sickly, ghostly pale under the flashing venue l

Chloe timed her response perfectly, her voice dropping into that classic, weaponized humility that made my skin crawl. “Oh, Mr. Miller, you’re giving me way too much credit. Honestly, I was just doing my job. Anyone in my position would have done the exact same thing.”She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, looking up at him with wide, adoring eyes. “Besides, fixing that little backend issue earlier wouldn't have been possible without the rest of the tech team's support, and, of course, your absolute trust in me, Mr. Miller.”Then, turning slightly toward the camera lens, she squeezed out a look of deep, profound victimization. “As for the... unfortunate drama with Ms. Bennett... I just believe the truth speaks for itself. It hurts to be treated like that, but I know the public can see who is right.”This little back-and-forther, cooked up entirely to farm pity, instantly set the live chat on absolute fire. Ethan’s stream was completely overrun by a massive wave of brain-dead comm

But Ethan wasn't done milking the drama yet.Taking full advantage of the viral algorithm, he immediately jumped back onto his account to drag me through the mud again, this time weaponizing the glitch from the Brighton Tech presentation. He set up his ring light, stared dead into the camera, and flashed a punchable, smug grin at his viewers.“As you can see, guys, some people just can't handle being fired without throwing a temper tantrum,” Ethan announced, his tone dripping with fake sarcasm. “Today, during a high-stakes presentation for our absolute biggest client, the shopping app framework previously coded by Bennett suddenly suffered a complete backend meltdown. It almost cost our company millions in damages.”He leaned closer to the microphone, lowering his voice for dramatic effect. “We have strong reasons to suspect that a certain toxic, disgruntled ex-employee intentionally left a malicious backdoor in the source code out of pure spite to sabotage us.”Then, he clapped his ha
