Chapter 2

Author: Seize The Day
“That’s none of my business. Maybe you and Fred can beg for some money.”

I carried my computer and walked out of the shop without looking back.

Georgia cursed behind me angrily.

“Nathan, you’re a stingy and selfish person!

“You’ll regret this!”

I hailed a cab and went back to my newly-rented apartment.

I had just sat down when my phone started buzzing.

Georgia was sending me a lot of voice messages.

“I don’t care what you do, but you have to transfer nineteen thousand dollars to me before 8 a.m. tomorrow.

“Fred lost his appetite for dinner over your antics!

“He already has stomach issues. If this makes him more ill and spoils his exams, you’ll get what’s coming to you!”

I listened to those voice messages. Georgia was going insane.

When I had stomach bleeding from working overtime, she was posting about her afternoon tea sessions with Fred.

But if Fred missed a single meal, she got this anxious!

I switched my computer on and went to the banking website.

Then, I plugged in a pendrive and pulled out all of our expenses for the past three years.

I had trusted her in the past, so I had never questioned her spending.

Times had changed, and I wanted to get down to the very last cent.

The screen was covered in lines after lines of expenses. I felt humiliated when I read them.

[Luxury food delivery services, three thousand dollars a month.]

[VIP study room, yearly subscription of twenty-four thousand dollars.]

[Luxury male clothes, single payment of eight thousand dollars.]

I stared at that eight-thousand-dollar expense as my fingers trembled.

I recalled that last winter, the leather shoes that I had worn for three years were biting my soles.

I asked Georgia if I could buy a new pair of shoes for five hundred dollars.

I still remembered what she had said back then.

“Our mortgage is very expensive. Can you be a little more frugal? If the shoes are still wearable, just bear with it. We have to use our money wisely.”

It turned out that she bought custom-made leather shoes for Fred that cost five thousand dollars.

She used the remaining three thousand dollars to buy him a tie.

The reason was that Fred needed to go for an important interview, so he needed to dress for the occasion.

My three-year marriage was a complete joke.

My phone lit up again.

Georgia saw that I was not answering her voice notes, so she texted me a long written paragraph.

[Nathan, you’re an adult. Aren’t you embarrassed of yourself for getting jealous over a hardworking young man? If you transfer me the money, I’ll get Fred to buy you a meal after he passes the examination.]

Immediately after, she sent me a voice message again.

It was Fred’s voice.

“Nathan, I heard from Georgia that you’re in a bad mood. Please don’t be mad at her. It’s all my fault. I won’t go for the examinations anymore. Please don’t fight with Georgia because of me.”

He was trying to play the victim.

As expected, Georgia immediately sent me more texts.

[Listen to what Fred’s saying! He’s such an understanding young man! Look at how calculative and stingy you are in comparison!]

[Transfer the money now! Otherwise, I won’t forgive you!]

I ignored her.

I immediately put all the receipts in a zip file and sent them to a lawyer, who was my university friend.

I also sent him a note.

[Dave, please help me look into this. How much can I get back if she transferred our marital asset to a third party?]

Dave Reid immediately replied with a text.

[How much is the total sum?]

[From my preliminary calculation, it’s more than three hundred thousand dollars.]

[Alright, leave it up to me. I’ll make sure they pay everything, including the interest, back to you.]

I switched off my computer and let out a long sigh.

I decided that I would not just cut them off financially, but I would also make them pay everything they had taken from me.

Six months later, the biggest screen in the CBD kept replaying Star Corporation’s promotional highlights. On the screen, I was wearing a custom-made suit as I stood beside Luna at the NASDAQ bell-ringing ceremony.Golden confetti was falling from the sky. “Star Corporation’s core technology has finally gone public. Founder Nathan Scott’s net worth has surpassed five hundred million dollars…” The news reporter’s voice echoed in the square.Beside a trash can, a masked janitor was trying to flatten a few cardboard boxes under her feet. When she heard my name, she froze.Slowly, she looked up and stared at the confident, brilliant man on the screen. It was Georgia. She was sentenced to ten months in prison because the charges of attempted extortion and trade secret infringement were dropped.Fred was sentenced to eighteen months in prison for theft and selling stolen goods. Two months ago, Georgia was released. The court ordered her to sell off her family home. She could

The police car drove away with its sirens on full blast. The banquet hall was even livelier than it was before. The people in the investment industry trusted people who were shrewd and tactful. What I did earlier was a brilliant strategy for eliminating any lingering suspicions about me, and it also demonstrated my counter-surveillance and risk management abilities to Star Corporation.Luna offered a toast in my honor. “Mr. Scott, you did a great job! Star Corporation needs partners who are as capable as you.”“Thank you, Ms. Carpenter. It was just like spring-cleaning for me.” I drank the wine. We finally signed the agreement. Three days later at the visitation room of the detention center, I saw Georgia through the thick glass. In just three days, she had aged a lot. Her hair was dry, and she had huge eye bags. She was wearing a prison uniform and trembled violently. When she saw me, she launched herself at the glass and picked up the phone.“Nathan, you’re her

The situation was extremely tense in the banquet hall. The lead lawyer of Luna’s legal team ran in and said in a low voice, “Ms. Anderson, if it involves an intellectual property dispute, we’ll have to stop the signing immediately. As for the board…”Luna did not say anything. She turned around and looked at me. She was trying to understand what I planned. Georgia noticed it and felt even bolder. She slammed the pendrive on the table.“So? What do you think? If you can’t give me five million dollars, I’m happy with three million!“As long as I receive the money, I’ll destroy the evidence. Nathan, this is your last chance!” She took out her phone and displayed her bank account details. I looked at her twisted face. She really thought she had won.I laughed. It started as a chuckle and turned into a guffaw. My laughter broke the silence in the hall.Georgia felt unnerved by my laughter. She yelled, “What are you laughing at? Have you lost your mind?!” I slowly butto

The celebratory dinner was hosted on the top floor of a luxury hotel. Georgia had not shown up anywhere for the past three days. Dave told me that she did not respond to the papers being served to her, and she had also skipped her court session. The three-hundred-thousand-dollar debt and the accrued interest had resulted in an enforcement order. Her bank accounts were frozen. She was truly broke. I sat in my office as I watched the surveillance footage on my computer. It was footage from the company’s server room from last night. At 2 a.m., a janitor wearing a cap opened the door to my private office with an access card. Then, they walked toward my old desk and took a pendrive. I had deliberately left it there on my old computer. Even though the person wore a mask, I knew that walk. It was impossible not to recognize Georgia’s mannerisms after living with her for three years. It was her. She was at her wits’ end, so she had disguised herself as a janitor and snu

The uniformed officials walked toward me with handcuffs. The crowd instinctively took a few steps back. My parents’ faces were pale from fear. They struggled to stand up from their wheelchairs to beg John for his mercy. I stopped my parents as I glared at John. “You don’t have a warrant, and there isn’t a case. How can you just take me with you?”“Really?”John sneered.“I can take you away if I get a tip from the public about a financial fraud. Take him away!” Georgia laughed even louder. “Nathan, what does it matter if you have ten million dollars? You’re nothing before real power!“If you beg for my forgiveness now, I can ask Uncle John to let you off the hook.” I did not move. Just as I was getting handcuffed, a cold female voice sounded nearby.“Who are you to detain my employee without proof?”It was Luna! She wore a simple suit, and her entire legal team followed behind. Her heels clicked against the road. Everyone fell silent. John frowned. It was obvi

I got into Luna’s Maybach. A faint cedarwood scent lingered inside the car.Luna passed me a document. “This is the final agreement for the project handover. Once you sign it, you’ll receive ten million dollars in your bank account next week.” I took the pen and signed my name. I did not ask her why she had helped me out earlier. I knew nothing came for free. She must have helped me because she needed me for my skills. “If your ex-wife finds out about your net worth now, I bet she’ll feel extremely sorry,” said Luna and looked out of the window calmly.I laughed. “She won’t have the time to think about that. Tomorrow, once the papers are served to her, she’ll be busy finding money to pay me back.”The next morning, the legal papers regarding the three-hundred-thousand-dollar marital asset dispute were served to Georgia. Dave texted me.[She received the papers. She called me a dozen times, but I did not pick up.]I tossed my phone on my desk and continued to code.
