Chapter 4

Author: Seize The Day
Three days later, at a designer department at Fortune Square, I was accompanying the new acting director of our company, Luna Carpenter.

Luna was a decisive woman with a cold and aloof aura. She was previously from a top-tier investment bank.

I had just signed a multi-million-dollar research project. She deliberately brought me some new clothes in preparation for the partners meeting dinner.

“Mr. Scott, try this suit.” Luna pointed at an expensive suit.

I took the clothes. I heard Georgia’s snarky laugh somewhere nearby.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Nathan? Weren’t you so broke that you couldn’t even cough out nineteen thousand dollars for me?”

I turned around.

Georgia held Fred’s arm and stared at me in disgust.

They were clearly shopping to make themselves feel better after I told them that I would throw them out of the house.

Georgia glanced at the suit that I was holding, then she snorted.

“Are you here to enjoy the air-conditioning after I dumped you?

“That suit costs a hundred thousand dollars. Will you be able to afford it if you somehow stain it?”

She raised her voice and attracted the sales associates and the customers’ attention.

She had always been the best at humiliating me in public to pressure me.

Fred also spoke up smugly. “Georgia, don’t be mean to Nathan! Nathan’s only looking at the clothes. After all, it’s not as easy for him to earn money.”

Georgia snorted and dragged Fred to a watch display.

She pointed at a watch that was thirty thousand dollars.

“I want this for you.”

She looked at me tauntingly.

“See? This is what a man should enjoy. Fred’s going to start his job soon. This watch suits him.

“As for you, you can be a garbage collector for the rest of your life!”

She took out a credit card arrogantly from the bag and passed it to the sales associate.

That was the sub-card that I had given to her in the past.

She thought that I had only removed her online access. She did not know that I had completely cut her off from my bank account.

The sales associate took the card and tried to swipe it.

The machine blinked a red light.

The sales associate passed the card back to Georgia politely. “I’m sorry, ma’am, the system indicates that this card is frozen.”

Georgia’s smug expression froze on her face.

“That’s impossible! Try again!”

The sales associate tried again, but it still did not work.

Everyone was eyeing them.

Fred looked embarrassed. He instinctively let go of Georgia’s hand.

I sneered and walked forward.

“Ms. Anderson, isn’t it shameful that you’re using your ex-husband’s card to buy your lover a watch?

“Let me remind you, the legal notice regarding the three hundred thousand dollars’ worth of marital assets that you transferred will be sent to you tomorrow.

“Be prepared to pay your debt.”

Georgia’s face turned pale as she yelled at me, “Nathan, you’re a cruel man! How dare you set me up like this?

“Do you think I’ll be afraid of you just because you froze my card? How dare you taunt me like this, you broke trash?”

She rushed over as though she wanted to claw my face off.

“Where’s the security? Escort this crazy woman out!”

Luna walked with two bodyguards flanking her.

She did not even spare a glance at Georgia. She walked directly toward me.

“Mr. Scott, can’t you settle this small issue soon?

“A few of the board members are waiting for you at tonight’s partners’ dinner.”

Everyone fell silent when she said that.

Georgia stared at me with wide eyes.

“P-Partner?”

Luna glanced at Georgia and then turned to the sales associate. She said casually, “Please bag the suit that Mr. Scott likes, along with this watch.

“Put these on my tab. Treat this as your welcome gift to the company, Mr. Scott.”

Georgia completely broke down. I took the suit from Luna and no longer looked at Georgia.

Then, I walked out.

Behind me, I heard Fred’s disgusted voice.

“Why were you pretending to be rich when you’re not? This is embarrassing!”

He flung Georgia’s hand away and walked out without looking back.

Georgia sat on the ground and trembled.

Six months later, the biggest screen in the CBD kept replaying Star Corporation’s promotional highlights. On the screen, I was wearing a custom-made suit as I stood beside Luna at the NASDAQ bell-ringing ceremony.Golden confetti was falling from the sky. “Star Corporation’s core technology has finally gone public. Founder Nathan Scott’s net worth has surpassed five hundred million dollars…” The news reporter’s voice echoed in the square.Beside a trash can, a masked janitor was trying to flatten a few cardboard boxes under her feet. When she heard my name, she froze.Slowly, she looked up and stared at the confident, brilliant man on the screen. It was Georgia. She was sentenced to ten months in prison because the charges of attempted extortion and trade secret infringement were dropped.Fred was sentenced to eighteen months in prison for theft and selling stolen goods. Two months ago, Georgia was released. The court ordered her to sell off her family home. She could

The police car drove away with its sirens on full blast. The banquet hall was even livelier than it was before. The people in the investment industry trusted people who were shrewd and tactful. What I did earlier was a brilliant strategy for eliminating any lingering suspicions about me, and it also demonstrated my counter-surveillance and risk management abilities to Star Corporation.Luna offered a toast in my honor. “Mr. Scott, you did a great job! Star Corporation needs partners who are as capable as you.”“Thank you, Ms. Carpenter. It was just like spring-cleaning for me.” I drank the wine. We finally signed the agreement. Three days later at the visitation room of the detention center, I saw Georgia through the thick glass. In just three days, she had aged a lot. Her hair was dry, and she had huge eye bags. She was wearing a prison uniform and trembled violently. When she saw me, she launched herself at the glass and picked up the phone.“Nathan, you’re her

The situation was extremely tense in the banquet hall. The lead lawyer of Luna’s legal team ran in and said in a low voice, “Ms. Anderson, if it involves an intellectual property dispute, we’ll have to stop the signing immediately. As for the board…”Luna did not say anything. She turned around and looked at me. She was trying to understand what I planned. Georgia noticed it and felt even bolder. She slammed the pendrive on the table.“So? What do you think? If you can’t give me five million dollars, I’m happy with three million!“As long as I receive the money, I’ll destroy the evidence. Nathan, this is your last chance!” She took out her phone and displayed her bank account details. I looked at her twisted face. She really thought she had won.I laughed. It started as a chuckle and turned into a guffaw. My laughter broke the silence in the hall.Georgia felt unnerved by my laughter. She yelled, “What are you laughing at? Have you lost your mind?!” I slowly butto

The celebratory dinner was hosted on the top floor of a luxury hotel. Georgia had not shown up anywhere for the past three days. Dave told me that she did not respond to the papers being served to her, and she had also skipped her court session. The three-hundred-thousand-dollar debt and the accrued interest had resulted in an enforcement order. Her bank accounts were frozen. She was truly broke. I sat in my office as I watched the surveillance footage on my computer. It was footage from the company’s server room from last night. At 2 a.m., a janitor wearing a cap opened the door to my private office with an access card. Then, they walked toward my old desk and took a pendrive. I had deliberately left it there on my old computer. Even though the person wore a mask, I knew that walk. It was impossible not to recognize Georgia’s mannerisms after living with her for three years. It was her. She was at her wits’ end, so she had disguised herself as a janitor and snu

The uniformed officials walked toward me with handcuffs. The crowd instinctively took a few steps back. My parents’ faces were pale from fear. They struggled to stand up from their wheelchairs to beg John for his mercy. I stopped my parents as I glared at John. “You don’t have a warrant, and there isn’t a case. How can you just take me with you?”“Really?”John sneered.“I can take you away if I get a tip from the public about a financial fraud. Take him away!” Georgia laughed even louder. “Nathan, what does it matter if you have ten million dollars? You’re nothing before real power!“If you beg for my forgiveness now, I can ask Uncle John to let you off the hook.” I did not move. Just as I was getting handcuffed, a cold female voice sounded nearby.“Who are you to detain my employee without proof?”It was Luna! She wore a simple suit, and her entire legal team followed behind. Her heels clicked against the road. Everyone fell silent. John frowned. It was obvi

I got into Luna’s Maybach. A faint cedarwood scent lingered inside the car.Luna passed me a document. “This is the final agreement for the project handover. Once you sign it, you’ll receive ten million dollars in your bank account next week.” I took the pen and signed my name. I did not ask her why she had helped me out earlier. I knew nothing came for free. She must have helped me because she needed me for my skills. “If your ex-wife finds out about your net worth now, I bet she’ll feel extremely sorry,” said Luna and looked out of the window calmly.I laughed. “She won’t have the time to think about that. Tomorrow, once the papers are served to her, she’ll be busy finding money to pay me back.”The next morning, the legal papers regarding the three-hundred-thousand-dollar marital asset dispute were served to Georgia. Dave texted me.[She received the papers. She called me a dozen times, but I did not pick up.]I tossed my phone on my desk and continued to code.
