The recess lasted fourteen minutes and changed the room's alignment by something she couldn't measure precisely but felt.

When Halverson called them back, three of the wolf pack bloc had moved seats. Not dramatically — just repositioned by a chair or two, enough to break the tight formation they'd held since the session opened. The Old Court faction's members had remained exactly where they were. She noted both. The mobile bloc was reassessing; the fixed one had already decided.

Isara's line picked up on the fourth ring.It was not Isara who answered."This channel isn't monitored past intake," said a voice Kaela didn't recognize. It was female, unhurried, with the kind of calm that came from training rather than nerves. "State your business or disconnect."Lucien didn't disconnect. "This is Varkas. I need to speak with the principal.""The principal isn't taking contact requests." A pause followed, textured with something that wasn't quite hesitation. "But I was told, if this number called, to say something back."Kaela leaned into the frame of the comm, close enough that Lucien's jaw tightened at the proximity, not the message."Say it," Lucien said.“ 'Ask him what he thinks he was protecting.’ " The voice recited it flatly, like a line memorized without being understood. "That's the whole message."The comm went dead on the other end. There was no confirmation of who had sent it. No denial either.Lucien set the receiver down with more care than it needed

The door didn't need forcing. It opened from the inside, and Davan stood in the frame with his hands already raised, palms out, unarmed, the handset nowhere in sight."Confirmed visual," the unit lead said into her comm. "Subject is — ""Standing right here," Davan said. "You can stop describing me."Nobody laughed. Two rifles stayed up. He didn't flinch from them, which told Kaela something, though she wasn't ready to say what.Lucien's voice came through clean on the shared line, from the base feed. "Secure the room first. Him second.""Copy."The unit swept past Davan into the room behind him. It was a single space, with low light, one chair, one table, and one object on the table that hadn't been there in any of the annex schematics: a folded square of paper, white, centred, as if someone had measured the middle of the table before walking away."Nothing else," the unit lead reported. "No devices, no second exit, no sign anyone else was here.""Then who was on the other end of tha

The annex door gave easier than it should have.Voss stopped Adrian with a hand before he could push through. "That's not resistance failure. That's a door somebody left unlatched on purpose."Adrian was already looking past the frame, at the seam where the hinge met the wall. "Claimant corridors run a secondary bolt behind the visible one. If the visible lock gives easy, the second one's still live." He reached past the handle, found the recessed panel exactly where memory said it would be, and thumbed it dark. "There. Now it's actually open."Inside the annex was cold air, a bank of monitors black and unpowered, and chairs pushed in.Voss ran a hand along the nearest console. There was no warmth, no hum. "This hasn't run tonight.""It ran recently, though." Adrian crouched by the base unit, where a cable had been pulled loose rather than unplugged; it had been yanked, not shut down. He checked his watch against a log sheet clipped to the wall, half-filled in a hand neither of them r

Adair didn't look up from the screen. "Two hits.""Show me." Lucien crossed to the console before she'd finished the sentence."First one's clean, relatively. Old resonance annex outside Karsev, decommissioned same year as ours, power draw restarted eleven months ago." Adair scrolled. "Second one's not clean.""Define not clean.""It's not filed as a resonance site at all." She turned the monitor towards him. "It's filed as a youth counselling annex. Public programme, state-adjacent, still technically operating two days a week for something called adolescent transition support."The room went still in the way it had gone still around ‘rehearsal for a schedule’."That's not repurposed," Kaela said. "That's laundered.""That's what I'm saying." Adair's voice had lost its usual flatness. "If she's running the same equipment under a programme that has actual children walking through it twice a week, the annex wasn't the ceiling. It was the smallest version of this."Voss swore under his b

Voss was already moving before Lucien finished giving the order, which meant he'd started before it was an order at all."Node 3B," he said into the comm, already at the door. "Decommissioned annex, east archive wing. That's where the ping lands once you filter out relay noise. I've got two on the ground now, ETA 90 seconds.""Decommissioned," Kaela repeated."Fourteen years," Adair said, still at the screen. "Sealed after the claimant intake reforms went through the first time. Nobody's badge should even register there."Adrian's head came up."That's not an archive wing," he said. "That's a processing annex. Recalibration chambers. Six of them, back when claimant status still ran through direct conditioning instead of paperwork." He said it flatly, the way Lucien had taught the room to expect from him now: information, bounded, no reach past the question. "If she's in there, she's not reading files. There's nothing to read. It's hardware."Lucien was already pulling up a floor schem

The audit populated in blocks and not lines. Adair had it scrolling on the wall screen so no one had to crowd his slate, and the room watched names accumulate the way you'd watch a wound keep bleeding after you thought you'd found the source."Most of these are clean," Adair said. "Expired on schedule, re-issued, logged. Standard churn." He didn't slow down to explain the ones that weren't. He let the screen do it, and the screen stopped on a name that made Kaela's stomach drop before her mind caught up to why.Orveen."That's not a claimant credential," Lucien said, flatly. It was not a question, though it came out like the front half of one."No," Adair said. "It's tagged as legacy-remnant. Which is either a leftover from a role that predates the claimant system entirely and was never formally closed out — " he looked up as he continued, “ — or something somebody forgot to revoke because they didn't know it existed to revoke.""Which is it?""I don't know yet. That's the problem."K

"Say it again," Kaela said, her voice shaking — but not with fear. The words hung over the Wolfe Pack's great hall like smoke that wouldn't clear. Three hundred wolves had gone perfectly still. The ceremony torches threw long shadows across the flagstone floor. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.Adrian

What You AreThey ran.Not blind. Lucien moved with direction, taking angles through the dark that suggested he'd already mapped this forest, already chosen a route before tonight. That should have been reassuring. Instead it made the back of Kaela's neck prickle, because a man who had pre-planned

She couldn't name it.Lucien drove fast but not recklessly, which told her he'd done this before — not this exact situation, but something adjacent.
