LOGIN"What exactly are you trying to accomplish, Lady Ashborne?"
Sebastian and the other Velmont family lawyers looked stunned at being summoned so suddenly under the current circumstances. "Find out which assets are registered under my personal name and which are under Vaeldric's. Map everything out and report back to me as soon as possible, including every agreement tied to them." They nodded without asking many questions. Still, I caught them exchanging glances behind my back, clearly confused about what was happening. Concern was written all over the faces of the three-man legal team. "I also want to know what options I have to freeze every asset under my name. If possible, freeze all of them. Vaeldric may only access them with my permission. No more and no less." "All of them, my lady?" The hesitation on Sebastian's face was impossible to miss. The lines that age had carved into his skin seemed even deeper as he frowned. After nearly forty years serving the Velmont family, it was understandable that such a reckless-sounding request would catch him off guard. Especially when Father had already given his approval for them to fulfill whatever I asked without interfering. Even a request this outrageous hadn't shaken Father's support. I could see the faint trace of a smile hidden at the corner of his lips. After all, he was the one who had taught me never to tolerate being looked down upon. A Vermont should never allow themselves to be humiliated. If someone stepped on you, make them apologize. Then smile graciously as you step on them in return. That was the kind of justice I was raised with. Whatever happened behind closed doors was one thing. In public, however, you must always remain elegant and forgiving. Because everything a noble does inevitably becomes public spectacle, whether right or wrong. "Every single one of them. As soon as possible. If you can begin today, then do it today. Thank you. You may leave now. I need more rest before tomorrow's funeral and memorial gathering." --- I stared at my baby, lying still before me. Clean. Peaceful. Beautiful. I held him for the first and last time. Pressed a kiss against his forehead. Whispered my farewell. His fingers were delicate. His eyelashes long. How handsome you would have been if you had stayed and become my child. But perhaps this was simply your fate. After everything your father has done behind my back, I'm not even sure I could have given you the warm and loving family you deserved. No tears came. Perhaps I had already cried them all away. Now I felt calmer. And, more importantly, rational. "What kind of stunt are you pulling, Seraphina?" Vaeldric's voice cut through the silence. He looked restless. His jaw was tight enough that it seemed he might grind his teeth, trying to contain his anger. "Is holding my child and saying goodbye considered a stunt to you, my lord?" Strangely enough, my voice remained calm. At that moment, I realized I had finally let go of everything I had been holding onto for years. I was no longer afraid of losing the Ashborne title. Nor anything that came with it. "What exactly do you mean by freezing everything?" Ah. So he had finally noticed. Not surprising. Vaeldric had always been quick to notice anything that threatened his interests. "I'm not touching what's yours, my lord. I'm merely taking back what's mine." "How can you separate and freeze part of our family's assets? Even if they're under your name, everything is connected. I won't be able to operate anything properly if you insist on being this dramatic." "Do families also abandon one another when one of them is fighting for their life, Vaeldric?" I asked. "If that's the case, then I'm merely returning the favor." He stared at me. Speechless. Meanwhile, I paid him little attention, continuing to rock my baby gently as though he were merely sleeping. "Come now, Vaeldric. Can't you see my child is trying to rest? Don't make a scene." I carefully laid my baby back down. "You made the right choice leaving, my darling. It seems your father isn't nearly as calm or wise as we once believed. Sleep peacefully and happily." I stroked his cheek one last time before turning away. Vaeldric remained frozen where he stood. For the first time in his life, he was facing rebellion from the obedient, conflict-averse wife he had always known. It was only natural that he didn't know what to do with the stranger standing before him. Not that I cared. I kept walking. The funeral would begin soon. The memorial reception would follow. My mood needed to remain steady. Controlled. I had no intention of letting the public see just how broken I really was. "You're blowing this completely out of proportion, Seraphina," Vaeldric called after me as his footsteps drew closer. "You're being impulsive and unreasonable." I stopped. "I wouldn't have gone this far without a reason. You know that better than anyone." Slowly, I turned to face him. "That night, you left me and our baby, Vaeldric. What exactly were you expecting from me now?" "I never left you." For the first time, his voice sounded calmer. His expression became more controlled. "I only took Lysara home. That was all." "I don't care." I spoke quietly. Yet I made sure he heard every word. "Why is everyone blaming me?" he asked. "I tried to do everything I could. I lost him too, Seraphina." For the first time, he looked tired. As though he no longer had the energy to argue. I looked at him for a long moment. Then I answered. "You didn't only lose your child, Vaeldric." My voice was steady. "You lost me too."Obstetrics DepartmentPatient: Lysara Varen12 weeksI read the words on the torn piece of paper over and over again. The document inside the envelope Magnus had given me was incomplete. Whether it had been cut on purpose or accidentally, I couldn't tell. All I had was this fragment."What does this mean?"I handed it to Lucien. My voice trembled. I still couldn't grasp what it was trying to tell me. But my mind had already started putting the pieces together.Obstetrics Department. Twelve weeks. Lysara's name. It could only mean one thing. Pregnancy.Lucien looked just as stunned as I was. We exchanged a glance, both searching for an answer. The difference was, he slowly smiled as if he had already figured it out, while I was still trying to catch up."How long have they been together?" Lucien tapped his fingers against the balcony railing."I don't know when it started. The oldest solid proof I found was at the inn a year ago. Maybe... maybe it had already been going on long before
SERAPHINA POVI looked at Magnus for a few seconds before finally nodding. Refusing my father-in-law's invitation in front of so many nobles would only create an awkward scene. Magnus wasn't someone I could dismiss as easily as Vaeldric."Of course."We walked away from the crowded ballroom. Neither of us spoke. The music still drifted faintly through the grand doors, but the farther we walked, the quieter everything became. Magnus stopped at a balcony overlooking the palace gardens."Congratulations. Tonight, you've managed to make all of Valerion talk about you.""So amusing. I don't remember asking for that."A faint smile crossed his face. The awkwardness settled between us almost immediately. The truth was, we had never hated each other. He had been the first person to welcome me as his daughter-in-law. Now, he was also the first one to wage war against me."That's the difference between us," he said. "You see attention as a consequence. I see it as a weapon."I didn't answer. Th
SERAPHINA POVThe music began to play softly beneath the lingering whispers and relentless camera flashes. Adrian led the first step with ease. I followed without missing a beat."I have to admit something."I raised an eyebrow. "That's usually a terrible way to start a conversation."The corner of his lips lifted, clearly pleased with my response. His plan had worked. The awkwardness between us disappeared, and the conversation flowed naturally, despite the countless eyes silently judging us."Everyone thinks I chose you.""So that means you didn't." I tilted my head. "Then who did you actually choose?""Today?" He glanced around the ballroom. "Valerion."A quiet laugh escaped me. That sounded exactly like something a future king would say, though I doubted it was entirely true.Adrian didn't answer immediately."You weren't surprised when I asked you to dance," he said instead. "You looked like you were expecting it.""Of course I was surprised. My face is just calmer than I am."Od
VAELDRIC POVThe music hadn't started yet, but the ballroom was already filled with the chatter of the guests. Not only Valerion's nobles had gathered tonight; distinguished guests from neighboring kingdoms had come as well.I watched Adrian step down from the stage after the long and solemn investiture ceremony. He had surpassed all of his siblings, legitimate or otherwise. Completely. The nobles instinctively stepped aside, making way for him. The daughters of the great houses held their breath, each silently hoping.Everyone knew what came next. The first dance. A tradition that had been passed down in Valerion for centuries. The first woman chosen by the Crown Prince wasn't simply his dance partner. It was a statement. A show of support. A sign of trust.I glanced at Father. He looked calm as ever, even raising his glass of wine toward Duke Evermont and several other nobles."Adrian knows what he's doing," he said quietly. "Still... I'm curious t
SERAPHINA POVI had just finished reading the report Lucien had sent when Abella knocked on my bedroom door. It was still early in the morning, yet the manor already seemed unusually busy."My Lady."She walked in carrying a stack of envelopes that nearly filled both of her arms."What's all that?""Letters. They're all for you."I set my tablet aside and walked over as she placed the pile neatly on the table. There were far more than I usually received.I had almost stopped receiving formal letters altogether. Not after becoming Lady Ashbourne. My days had revolved around nothing but the manor.Ah... I almost forgot. The letters had started arriving again ever since things between Vaeldric and me fell apart. How ironic. It had taken a catastrophe for people to remember I existed. But these letters were different. Even before my marriage, aside from urgent business matters, I had never received this many.Besides, wasn't messaging or email far more efficient these days? Paperless, con
VAELDRIC POVThere is no sound louder than silence. Not a single word was spoken on the ride home.Father sat across from me, equally silent. I turned my gaze toward the window instead. Unfortunately, my own reflection was far more unsettling than anyone else's face.Who delayed the consent? The question echoed relentlessly inside my head. Everyone knew it was a simple question, one with an answer I knew perfectly well. But answering it would have been the same as committing suicide.I must have looked like a fool, taking so long to decide."You stayed silent for too long." Father finally broke the silence. "In war, hesitation kills faster than any sword."I clenched my fists. "I almost answered. I can't keep lying."For the first time, I heard Father grind his teeth. He was clearly restraining himself from tearing me apart right there."And fortunately, you didn't." His voice steadied again."You keep asking me to lie."Father shook his head. "I asked you to choose.""What's the diff
