The deeper we went, the quieter the building got, until the usual noise of Blackgate, shouting, metal doors, distant radios, faded into something closer to silence. Nobody explained anything. Julian's POV Vincent's report on the infirmary incident sat on my desk for exactly four minutes before I picked it up. Before that, there were other things that needed handling first, the way there always were. A shipment moving through the docks two states over, delayed by a customs inspection that shouldn't have happened and almost certainly hadn't happened by accident. A guard on the north block who'd started skimming off a deal he thought nobody had noticed. A judge, three counties away, who needed reminding of an arrangement that predated his appointment to the bench. I handled each of them the same way I handled everything, a call here, a name mentioned there, instructions passed through enough hands that my own fingerprints never touched any of it directly. The judge would remember his obligations by morning. The guard would find himself transferred somewhere considerably less comfortable within the week.
