I was just trying to compile a list like this for a friend who was tired of the same old recommendations. The obvious picks are still great—Claire from 'Outlander' is a classic for a reason, all that medical knowledge in a totally foreign time. 'The Hunger Games' gave us Katniss, obviously. But some of the more interesting ones lately come from genres you might not expect. N.K. Jemisin’s broken earth books, starting with 'The Fifth Season', have Essun, who is powerful in a terrifying, world-ending way, and it’s not about being likable at all. It’s about survival and rage.

For something completely different in tone, I adore the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. The first is 'The Eyre Affair'. She’s a literary detective who can jump into books. It’s clever and whimsical, and her strength is more about wit and stubbornness than physical combat. On the fantasy front, you can’t skip 'Gideon the Ninth'—Gideon Nav is a sword lesbian with a terrible sense of humor, trapped in a haunted house in space. It’s a wild mix of genres, and her voice is instantly iconic.

For historical fiction, Hilary Mantel’s 'Wolf Hall' trilogy, while focused on Thomas Cromwell, gives an incredible, sharp presence to women like Anne Boleyn and Mary Tudor through his perspective. They’re not protagonists in the usual sense, but they feel incredibly potent and real. In sci-fi, 'Ancillary Justice' by Ann Leckie features Breq, who used to be a starship AI controlling hundreds of bodies. Now she’s just one, seeking revenge. The perspective on identity and power is fascinating. My last pick would be 'Circe' by Madeline Miller, a retelling that turns a sidelined nymph into a complex, self-determined witch who chooses her own exile. The strength is in her gradual, hard-won autonomy over centuries.

Honestly, half these lists just recycle the same novels. Where's the love for older, weirder stuff? Try 'The Left Hand of Darkness'. Yes, the protagonist is male, but the entire book is a deep exploration of gender and society, and the prime minister of the alien world, who is a pivotal character, exists outside our binary. For a truly formidable lead, 'The Power' by Naomi Alderman flips the script entirely—women develop a physical power, and the book follows several, like Allie and Roxy, as the world changes. It’s messy and confrontational, not a simple empowerment fantasy.

I have a soft spot for the genre of characters with complicated morals and rough edges, so 'Gideon the Ninth' immediately comes to mind. The protagonist isn't a traditional 'strong' hero; she's a foul-mouthed, irreverent fighter who would rather make sarcastic comments than lead an army. That sense of defiance and reluctant competence felt more real to me than many a noble warrior. Another one I'd mention is 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet'. The strength there comes from empathy and diplomacy, not combat. Rosemary is processing a lot of personal baggage and still manages to build connections and solve problems through understanding. It's a different kind of fortitude, the sort that holds a community together without needing to be the loudest voice in the room. I keep going back to books that explore resilience quietly, without fanfare.
