I need more fantasy romance where the couple is older, established, or reunited. So much of it is YA or NA with first loves. 'The Hexologists' is a mystery fantasy with a married couple, Iz and Warren, as the leads. Their magic (she's a sorceress, he's an arcane artificer) and their loving, bantery relationship are equally important as they solve cases. The blend is comfortable and smart—the fantasy is their job, and their romance is the solid foundation they work from. It's incredibly refreshing.

The discussion about 'spice' in these blends is interesting. For some, explicit scenes are part of the fantasy—a literal magical intimacy. For others, the fade-to-black approach lets the tension built by the magical world simmer in a different way. Books like 'The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches' prove a closed-door romance can still feel deeply romantic and magical. The blend is about emotional connection, not physical demonstration.

As an audiobook listener, the narration can make or break this genre. 'Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries' is narrated perfectly—the reader captures the main character's academic dryness and her slow-burn fascination with her gruff colleague. The subtle magic in the fae descriptions feels more immersive when spoken. A good narrator can make the blend of folklore and romance feel seamless, like you're being told an old tale by a fire.

I think the blend works better in first-person POV for this genre. Getting inside the protagonist's head as they discover magic and fall in love simultaneously makes both experiences more immediate. 'Assistant to the Villain' uses this to great comedic effect—the heroine's internal monologue as she navigates her crush on her evil boss and the absurd magical workplace hazards is hilarious. The fantasy and the romance hit you at the same time, through the same lens of her growing confidence and affection.

The marketing for 'One Dark Window' and 'Two Twisted Crowns' nailed it. Gothic, fairy-tale fantasy with a romance that's both dangerous and symbiotic. The magic in this duology is based on a nightmarish deck of Providence cards, and the heroine shares her mind with a monstrous spirit. Her romance with the mysterious highwayman is fraught with this shared burden of magic—they can't trust each other, but they're the only ones who understand the cost. The fantasy is the romantic conflict.

Being the alpha's daughter meant you get to live life the way you want.
Well, that wasn't the case of Cella Ardentis who only knew life inside the castle and had never stepped out of it until she ran away after the supposed betrothal to an unknown alpha.
While on the run she is ambushed by the assassins sent by her father to kill her but she is saved by a mysterious man who happens to be her mate– Aeden Virell but she rejects him.
Fate had a plan for the two star-crossed lovers as they leave the wolf world behind into a new world totally different from the one Cella has known.
Here, Aeden knows way too much and as they get closer trying to navigate the new life together– curses, prophecy, even lies arise to pull them apart.
Will they be strong enough to let love guide them or give in to the stormy fight?
A dark, thrilling romance where desire burns hotter than blood.
Honestly, after reading so many, the ones that stick with me are where the fantasy premise is just brilliantly simple and unique. Like 'The Night Circus'—a magical competition. Or 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue'—a girl is forgotten. The magic doesn't need to be a complex system with ten types of elemental powers. Sometimes a single, powerful, evocative magical idea is enough to fuel an entire breathtaking romance.
The simpler the fantastical rule, the more room there is to explore its profound emotional and romantic consequences. When an author spends less time info-dumping a magic system and more time showing how that one magical truth affects a heart and a relationship, that's when the blend feels truly magical to me. Less can be so much more.
The blend I'm craving lately is where the magic system itself is a metaphor for the relationship. 'The Midnight Bargain' by C.L. Polk does this brilliantly. It's set in a Regency-esque world where women's magic is bound during marriage to protect unborn children. The protagonist's fight to practice magic is inextricably linked to her desire for autonomy and a partnership of equals.
The romance with a sympathetic suitor is tense and beautiful because their connection is built on mutual respect for her craft and her dreams. The fantasy constraint creates the central conflict, making the love story feel urgent and deeply political. It’s more of a fantasy with a strong romantic subplot than a pure romance novel, but the emotional core is utterly romantic in its ideals.
As someone who devours fantasy romance like it's my lifeline, 2024 has been a stellar year for the genre. 'A Court of Silver Flames' by Sarah J. Maas continues to dominate with its intense character arcs and steamy romance wrapped in a high-stakes fantasy world. Another standout is 'The Serpent and the Wings of Night' by Carissa Broadbent, blending vampire lore with a gripping enemies-to-lovers dynamic.
For those craving something lighter, 'Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries' by Heather Fawcett offers a cozy yet magical romance between a scholar and a mischievous fae. On the darker side, 'The Hurricane Wars' by Thea Guanzon is a masterpiece of political intrigue and slow-burn passion set in a war-torn world. Each of these books brings something unique to the table, whether it's world-building, emotional depth, or sheer escapism, making them must-reads for any fantasy romance lover.
Ooh, for something with a more playful, cozy vibe, you gotta check out 'Legends & Lattes' by Travis Baldree. It’s about an orc adventurer who retires to open a coffee shop. The fantasy worldbuilding is delightful and familiar, but the romance is this sweet, low-stakes subplot that develops naturally as she builds her new life. The world feels lived-in in this everyday way—goblins as contractors, a succubus as a pastry chef. The love story isn't the main driver of epic plot, but it's a warm, integral part of building a community in this fantasy setting. Perfect if you want the worldbuilding to feel comforting and the romance to feel earned and gentle.
