I'm a total sucker for this, especially when the alpha is the one who's broken and the 'family' forms around putting them back together. The typical setup is the vulnerable omega being sheltered, but flipping it is so much more interesting. An alpha with maybe a messed-up sense of protectiveness, isolated by their own strength, who gets slowly adopted by a bunch of betas and omegas who aren't afraid of them.
The bonding rituals in these stories are my favorite part. It's never the official pack ceremonies; it's the silly, domestic stuff. The omega who insists on cooking for everyone even though they're a terrible cook, and the alpha painfully eats it to be polite. The group nest that isn't fluffy pillows and scenting, but a shared safehouse with mismatched blankets and a secret knock. That stuff sticks with me more than any epic battle.
It works because it takes the biological imperative and makes it personal. The instinct might draw them together initially—a scent of distress, a territorial dispute—but the family is forged over burnt casserole and bad movies.
Honestly, I think it's often clumsily done. Too many authors use the alpha/omega dynamic as a shortcut to bypass actual character development for the found family. A whiff of 'pack pheromones' and suddenly they're all devoted? Feels cheap.
The good ones, though, show the friction first. An omega resistant to being 'claimed' by any pack, an alpha learning to temper their dominance for the sake of group harmony. The bond develops through shared vulnerability, not just biological pull. Maybe they're all runaways from rigid societal roles, creating their own rules. That struggle to connect against their own instincts is what makes the eventual loyalty meaningful.
Okay, so I feel like a lot of ABO fics that get super into the pack stuff actually sideline the 'found family' part? They'll have this huge, sprawling pack, but the bonding is just this automatic omega-caretaker-alpha-protector thing, and it feels more like assigned roles than chosen family. Like, everyone slots neatly into a hierarchy because of their dynamics, not because they actually like each other. It ends up feeling transactional.
The ones that nail it for me are where the bond forms in spite of the dynamics, not because of them. The grumpy alpha who shouldn't care but ends up bringing soup to the sick omega next door because they're just a decent person underneath the posturing. Or the omega who rejects the whole 'nurturer' stereotype but still fiercely protects their weird little group of outcasts. That defiance of the expected trope is where the real heart is. I'm thinking of fics like 'The Left Hand of Darkness' but in ABO dress—where the bond is intellectual and chosen first.
My personal litmus test is if I can forget the A/B/O labels for a chapter and still feel the strength of the connection between the characters. If I can, they've built a real found family.

I'm the strongest warrior of the Silvermoon Pack. For ten years, I've been secretly in love with my Alpha, Aiden. The only wolfless Alpha.
We grew up with nothing but each other. I bled for him. I cut down his enemies and searched for a cure to awaken his wolf.
He promised me a place at the top—always by his side.
The fated mate bond never snapped into place for us. It didn't matter. I loved him anyway.
Then I found out the truth. His heart belonged to someone else. A she-wolf named Gianna.
When a rival pack kidnapped her, Aiden sent me to get her back.
I did, but I died. And so did my wolf.
He welcomed Gianna home with open arms, ready for their Mating Ceremony, but he refused to believe I was dead.
He thought I was just jealous, hiding in a fit of rage. He even ordered my banishment.
But on the night of the full moon, as the entire pack gathered for their Alpha’s ceremony, my second-in-command crashed the altar in his war truck.
He walked toward Aiden, carrying my blood-soaked body.
Aiden’s body trembled. He collapsed to his knees, clutching his chest in agony.
"I can feel it. The mate bond…it’s breaking. Rhea was my fated mate... How can she be dead?!"

Now, caught between seduction, power, and betrayal, Alyssa must fight for her destiny. Because in a world where Lunas and Alphas reign, only the strongest survive.
Most folks talk about the knotting pheromones stuff, but what hooks me is how the dynamic externalizes power imbalances that would otherwise stay psychological. It’s a built-in hierarchy you can see and smell, literally. That lets authors explore control, resistance, and consent through a supernatural lens without it being a straightforward human tyranny.
I just reread one where the omega lead wasn’t just submissive; they used their perceived ‘weakness’ as a strategic blind spot, gathering intel while the alphas postured. The relationship wasn’t about overcoming biology but weaponizing everyone’s assumptions about it. The real tension came from the gap between societal expectation and individual cunning.
Sometimes I wonder if we’re drawn to it because it simplifies messy real-world power plays into something tangible, almost like a game board with clear pieces. Yet the best ones make you forget the rules and just feel the connection, or the lack thereof.
