From a purely practical standpoint, the Briggs translation is often cheaper and more readily available in paperback editions than the Pevear/Volokhonsky. That matters! If you're dipping a toe in, not wanting to invest in a fancy hardcover, grabbing the Briggs is a no-brainer. The readability is high, the physical book is easier to carry around, and you won't feel guilty if you decide it's not for you. Sometimes the 'best' translation is the one you'll actually read.

I've only listened to the audiobook, which is based on the Briggs translation. Listening to a sixty-hour audiobook is a commitment, and if the translation was clunky, it would be unbearable. Instead, it was completely compelling. The narrator's performance combined with the clarity of the text made those hours disappear. So if you're an audiobook person, the Briggs translation is a fantastic choice for that format too.

Some people will tell you to start with P&V for the 'authentic' experience. I call that gatekeeping. The authentic experience is the emotional and intellectual journey Tolstoy laid out. Briggs delivers that in spades. Getting hung up on lexical choices misses the forest for the trees. The forest is breathtaking, and Briggs gives you a clear path through it.

It's solid. Not much more to add. Everyone else has covered it.

Is the Anthony Briggs translation of War and Peace good for newcomers?

It gets the job done without fuss. That’s my review. It’s a reliable, workmanlike translation that doesn’t stumble. You won’t be raving about the beautiful prose, but you also won’t be cursing awkward phrasing at 2 a.m. For a book this massive, a smooth, predictable ride is sometimes better than a more beautiful but bumpier one. Consistency is an underrated virtue in a translation.

Honestly, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is my hill to die on. Yes, it aims for extreme fidelity to the Russian, which can feel a bit stilted in places, but that's the point. You're getting Tolstoy's rhythms and stylistic quirks, not a smooth reinterpretation. For a modern reader who wants the closest possible experience to the original text, warts and all, this is it. Their notes are also incredibly thorough, explaining cultural and historical context that other versions gloss over.
