I've gone through so many apps, and the one that finally stuck is StoryGraph. It's built for tracking reading, not just buying books. The interface focuses on your currently reading shelf, page/chapter updates, and reading stats. You can set a page goal for the year, and it breaks down your progress by mood, pace, and genre. Importing from Goodreads was seamless, too.
The social aspect is quieter and more focused on actual reading habits than endless reviews. It handles multiple formats well—you just mark whether you read a physical copy, ebook, or listened to the audiobook. The stats page is pure dopamine for a data nerd like me.

Audible's library itself is a tracker for audiobooks. The app shows your progress bar for each title. If you exclusively listen, this might be enough. You can see all your 'In Progress' titles on one shelf. It's not designed for multi-format tracking, but for a single format from a single source, it's perfectly adequate and requires no extra effort.
Just be aware you're locked into the Amazon ecosystem. The app also has a bad habit of resetting your place if you switch devices carelessly. For a simple listener who sticks to one phone, though, it's a passive tracker that works in the background. I wouldn't recommend it for complex tracking needs.

I prioritize apps that respect the child's autonomy. 'The New York Public Library's SimplyE' app gives my tween direct, free access to a huge catalog with just a library card. I don't get a dashboard, and that's okay. She's at an age where monitoring every click feels intrusive. Our 'tracking' is her excitedly telling me about a book she found, or me spotting her curled up with the tablet, absorbed. The progress is in her independent selection and sustained silent reading. Sometimes the best tracking tool is stepping back and trusting that access to great stories, without surveillance, is what fosters real, self-directed progress.
Moon+ Reader on Android is a powerhouse for this, especially if you sideload a lot of EPUBs. It has a built-in sync feature using Google Drive or Dropbox. You need to enable it in the settings, but once you do, it backs up your reading progress, bookmarks, and even your custom themes for each book. The sync isn't instant like Kindle's—you might need to manually trigger it—but for a third-party app handling your personal files, it's incredibly robust. It's perfect for people with a huge library of DRM-free books who want control over their data.
Don't overlook the 'Reading List' function in modern browsers like Safari or Chrome. If you're reading a long-form article or a serial on a website, you can save it to your reading list, and it will sync across your devices signed into the same browser account. It strips away ads and formatting for a clean read.
Again, it doesn't save your precise scroll position, but it saves the link. For linear blog-style stories where you read one page per chapter, it's a built-in, zero-cost syncing solution that requires no extra apps.
