I miss the days of curated blogs. Now, I rely on 'Pocket' again. I've trained its 'Recommendations' by saving stories I like from around the web. Over time, it suggests similar long-form articles and short stories from places like 'Longreads' or 'BBC Future', which often have narrative nonfiction that reads like fiction in specific genres.
University literary magazine apps! Many have digital editions that are free. 'The Iowa Review,' 'Granta,' etc. They often have apps or very mobile-friendly sites. The curation is top-tier literary, covering various genres within literary fiction. It's not for everyone, but if you want quality prose, it's a secret source.
I'm just here for the comments. I'm taking notes on all these app suggestions. My current method is literally just bookmarked threads on Reddit, which is not sustainable. Hopefully, I'll find a better system in this discussion. Thanks in advance, everyone!

One of my favorite ways to unwind is diving into bite-sized stories on platforms that offer free reads. I stumbled upon 'Wattpad' years ago, and it’s still a go-to for discovering hidden gems—everything from romance to horror, all written by passionate amateurs. The community vibe is strong, with readers leaving comments and votes, which makes it feel like a collaborative experience. Another standout is 'Royal Road,' especially for fantasy and sci-fi lovers. The serialized format there keeps you hooked, almost like waiting for weekly TV episodes. For classics, 'Project Gutenberg' is a treasure trove of public domain shorts. It’s wild how many timeless tales you can find there, from Poe’s chilling mysteries to Chekhov’s poignant slices of life.
If you’re into niche genres, 'Tapas' has a quirky mix of indie stories, often with a visual or episodic twist. And don’t overlook 'Archive of Our Own'—while it’s fanfic-heavy, some original shorts there are breathtakingly creative. What I love about these platforms is how they democratize storytelling; anyone can share their voice, and readers get to sift through raw, unfiltered creativity. It’s like a global book club where the next masterpiece might be just a click away.
Character.ai and other AI chat platforms have a weird corner where people create 'storytelling' bots. You can prompt them with a genre or premise, and they'll generate a short, narrated tale on the fly. The 'curation' is your prompt and the community's shared character designs.
It's obviously not human-authored literature, but as a source of endless, free, personalized audio shorts? It's a trip. The quality is inconsistent and often surreal, but it's a novel way to get a story fix. I wouldn't recommend it for curated quality, but for sheer weird, exploratory fun, it's a platform nobody ever mentions in these conversations.
One of my all-time favorite free short story collections has to be 'The Lottery and Other Stories' by Shirley Jackson. It's a classic for a reason—her unsettling, almost mundane horror sticks with you long after reading. I stumbled upon it during a late-night deep dive into public domain works, and 'The Lottery' alone reshaped how I view societal norms. The rest of the collection, like 'The Daemon Lover,' weaves this eerie tension into everyday settings.
Another gem is 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, often bundled in free anthologies. It’s a masterclass in psychological horror and feminist critique. For something lighter, Project Gutenberg’s collections of O. Henry’s witty, twist-filled tales like 'The Gift of the Magi' are perfect for quick reads. If you’re into sci-fi, Philip K. Dick’s early short stories pop up in various free archives—mind-bending stuff that makes you question reality.
