Honestly, I find a lot of these portrayals kind of icky. It's always this immense, celestial being with the power to unmake reality getting obsessed with some random human. The 'struggle' is so one-sided it's not a struggle, it's stalking with wings. The mortal has zero agency; their only power is being the object of desire. It's just divine-level instalove with a gloss of conflict. I dipped out of the genre after one too many books where the 'climax' was the angel smiting the mortal's ex-boyfriend or something equally juvenile. If you want a real power play, read monster romance. At least the non-human love interest there might actually eat you.

My favorite take is when the power imbalance is legal or cosmic, not just physical. There's this niche within the genre that treats Heaven's hierarchy like a rigid, bureaucratic corporation. The archangel is bound by divine law—cannot reveal certain truths, cannot interfere directly, cannot fall in love. The mortal, operating with no such rules, becomes a chaotic variable. The struggle plays out in loopholes and clandestine meetings. The angel's power is vast but constrained; the mortal's power is limited but free. The romance becomes a conspiracy against the system they're both trapped in. It's less about battles and more about stolen moments that could get them both erased from the Book of Life. That tension, the constant risk, makes the emotional payoff so much sharper.

The power dynamic is almost the entire point for me, and I think a lot of authors get it backwards. It's not just about the angel being overwhelmingly powerful and the mortal being awed. The most interesting stories flip the script. The mortal's humanity, their messy emotions, their stubborn free will, becomes a power the angel literally cannot comprehend or control.
I read one where the archangel was this ancient, detached force of order, and the mortal was a hospice nurse. His power was cosmic; hers was holding a dying person's hand. She didn't defeat him with strength, she eroded his certainty with compassion, which was a force he had no defense against. The struggle was his own ideology crumbling. The romance worked because his 'power down' felt earned, not just him deciding to be nice.
Too many books have the angel just instantly besotted and protective, which voids the tension. The good ones make the mortal's weakness their secret weapon.

They often mess it up by making the mortal too special. If everyone's a secret nephilim or a reincarnated angel, there's no real struggle. The best book I read recently had a truly ordinary human woman, a journalist, who used her job as her weapon. She investigated the angel's mysterious appearances like a story, asking questions he couldn't answer, publishing things that forced his hand. Her power was exposure, truth. It was a clever, modern twist on the mortal-mightier-than-the-sword idea.
