Ultimately, it's a useful shortcut if you're in a hurry and trust the store's curation. Is it a perfect, pure reflection of America's reading habits? No. Is it a manipulated marketing tool? Sometimes. Is it generally a list of books that a lot of people are buying and enjoying? Probably. The selection process, for all its behind-the-scenes complexity, results in a table that serves a simple purpose: to help people find a book without spending all day looking. In that, it usually succeeds.

The 'Discover Great New Writers' or 'Pennie's Picks' programs are separate but related. Those are explicitly curated, often highlighting debuts or under-the-radar books. Success in those programs can lead to bestseller status by giving a title an initial boost. So the selection process for the main bestseller list is sometimes the end result of an earlier, more editorial selection. It's a pipeline: curated pick -> increased visibility -> sales velocity -> bestseller label.

It's interesting to think about the data they don't use. They probably don't track how often a book is picked up, browsed, and put back down. They don't track in-store reading sessions. They only track the final transaction. So a book with a captivating cover that gets picked up 100 times but only bought once might be ignored, while a book with a bland cover that gets bought immediately by people who came for it gets the badge. The selection process is blind to potential, only to realized action.

The influence of film/TV adaptations isn't uniform. A fantasy or sci-fi series getting adapted can cause every book in the backlist to shoot onto the genre bestseller list for months. For a literary fiction adaptation, maybe just the specific book gets a bump. For a classic, it might cause a reissue to appear on the classics bestseller list. The adaptation effect is a powerful force, but its intensity and duration on B&N's genre lists are heavily mediated by how franchise-oriented and world-dependent the original book series was. A dense fantasy world benefits more from a visual adaptation than a quiet character study might.
The 'book with a bonus' trend is huge. Editions that include bonus chapters, alternative chapter ones, or short story epilogues exclusive to B&N drive sales. For the super-fan, it's a must-buy, even if they already own the book. This merchandising tactic definitely influences what appears to be 'trending,' as these exclusive editions get prime real estate.
Don't sleep on the power of bookstore employees. Next time you're in a BN, just ask a bookseller what's flying off the shelves this week. They'll not only point you to the official display but might give you the inside scoop on a debut novel that's just starting to gain crazy word-of-mouth momentum. That human rec is often better than any list.
I find the behind-the-scenes lobbying kind of amusing. Publishers have sales reps whose entire job is to 'sell in' a book to the retail buyers. They present the marketing plan, the author's platform, the comparables. It's like a pitch meeting. The buyer then decides how many copies to commit to. That commitment is a huge factor in whether the book will debut as a best seller. So in a very real sense, the first 'choice' is made by a handful of buyers at key retail chains based on a sales pitch and a gut feeling about the market.
A darker, gothic pick that’s always around is 'The Raven Boys' by Maggie Stiefvater. It’s the start of a series about a girl from a family of psychics and four boys from a private school searching for a dead Welsh king in rural Virginia. The atmosphere is everything—dreamy, eerie, and saturated with longing. The characters are complex and flawed, and their relationships are deep and complicated. Stiefvater’s prose is uniquely beautiful, almost poetic. It’s not a fast-paced action fantasy; it’s a slow-burn character study with magic woven into the fabric of the world. It’s a cult favorite that’s crossed over into mainstream bestseller status because it’s so utterly unique and absorbing.
Don't forget the local factor! The 'store' bestseller list is technically an aggregate of all store sales, but individual stores can have wild variations. A store near a university might have academic bestsellers; one in a suburb might have more kids' books. The online list is completely homogenized. So when you compare 'the store list,' you're comparing a national average to a national total, which still flattens out interesting local quirks.
