Honestly, the biggest improvement for me wasn't about the light at all—it was the dark mode. Flipping to white text on a black background on an e-ink display is a total game-changer in a dark room. The screen itself emits almost no light; the text just floats there. It feels easier on my eyes than even a warm front light shining on a white 'page.' I know some people hate the inverted look, says it gives them ghosting issues, but my device handles it pretty cleanly.
I still use a tiny bit of front light with dark mode, just enough to illuminate the text slightly, but it's a fraction of what I'd need otherwise. My eyes don't feel dried out or strained after a long session anymore. It's the closest digital reading gets to the experience of a physical book under a single lamp.

E-ink does most of the heavy lifting, obviously, but it's the warmth and scheduling of the front light that really changes things. On my current reader, I have the warmth cranked up to a soft amber after sunset, which completely kills that harsh blue glare. It feels more like reading by a lamp than a screen. I also appreciate that I can schedule it to shift automatically, so I don't even have to think about it.
What gets overlooked sometimes is the margin and line spacing options. A super cramped page in a tiny font forces your eyes to work harder, especially when you're tired. Being able to widen the margins and add a little space between lines reduces that strain significantly. It lets my eyes relax and just follow the text without squinting or losing my place every other line. The combination of a warm, even light and a generously spaced page layout is what finally stopped my late-night reading headaches.

They minimize flicker and offer incredibly adjustable lighting. My old tablet had PWM flicker that would give me a headache within twenty minutes, but a good e-reader's front light is constant and uniform across the whole screen. You can dial the brightness and color temperature down to the exact level that feels comfortable for your specific environment, which is something a regular book and a lamp can't really do. That level of control is what makes the difference.

"Kane stays unmoving, and I realize he’s barely breathing. I don’t think he needs oxygen to stay alive, so that’s not too surprising, but I can’t’ figure out why he is so still. His hand at my waist is so very close to my breastbone, the longing for him to slide it up only a few inches, to touch me in places no one ever has before, has a gasp leaving my lips. I have to bite down again to keep from moaning, and he hasn’t even kissed me yet."
Emory
I was born to be the Alpha of my pack. But now... I am here, in the castle of our greatest enemy, the Vampire King. I should hate Kane, but the more time I spend with him, the more I long for him. I am not here to be his lover, though. I am here to be his feeder. But even before his lips graze my skin the first time, I know I would give myself to him in every way imaginable if only he should ask.
Kane
I long to taste the wolf shifter, but not her blood, her body. But I'm already betrothed to marry another vampire, and if I call that off, I have resigned my kingdom to yet another war. There has to be a way to keep Emory as my feeder but not claim her in my bed. I just haven't figured it out yet. But I have enemies, and every moment she spends here in my home, Castle Graystone, she's in danger. I can protect her, but at what cost? Am I willing to risk everything to make her mine? Or should I put my duty to my kingdom first?

switching between tablets and dedicated e-readers, and the difference in eye comfort is night and day. Tablets are like staring into a flashlight—the blue light and glare make my eyes feel gritty after just an hour. E-readers with e-ink mimic paper so well that I forget I'm not holding a physical book. The lack of backlight (or adjustable warm light on newer models) means no more midnight headaches when I binge-read 'The Witcher' series.
Physical strain matters too. Tablets force my hands into awkward positions because they're heavier and bulkier, while my Kindle fits in one hand like a paperback. I once tried reading 'One Piece' manga on a tablet during a commute—the combination of screen glare and constant zooming left me with a migraine. E-readers don't have that problem; the monochrome display might lack color, but it trades vibrancy for longevity. After switching to an e-reader, my optometrist noticed reduced eye strain during checkups—no coincidence there.
