I wonder if we conflate 'most studied' with 'most assigned.' There's a difference. A novel might be assigned in thousands of intro courses ('To Kill a Mockingbird') but generate less cutting-edge scholarship than a more niche, difficult text like 'Gravity's Rainbow.'

'Most studied' could mean volume of undergraduates exposed to it, or it could mean depth of critical attention from scholars. They often overlap, but not always.

The campus novel about academia itself gets studied a lot, naturally. 'Lucky Jim,' 'The Secret History,' 'Possession,' 'On Beauty.' They're used to reflect on the life of the mind, critique institutional politics, or explore intertextuality.

It's a bit meta—studying novels about studying. But it makes sense that in a university environment, books that mirror that environment would resonate and offer rich material for analysis.

The academic conference circuit is a good indicator. You'll see endless panels on Joyce, Woolf, Faulkner, Morrison, and Coetzee. The sheer volume of papers presented on these authors every year cements their status as the most studied.

Graduate students build careers on specializing in one of these giants. That ongoing production of new scholarship, even on well-trodden texts, ensures they remain central to the discipline.

What must read book classics are recommended by universities?

I've noticed that universities often recommend classics that shape intellectual thought and cultural discourse. 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee is a staple, praised for its exploration of racial injustice and moral growth. Another frequent recommendation is '1984' by George Orwell, a dystopian masterpiece that delves into themes of surveillance and totalitarianism. These books are not just literature; they are tools for understanding society. Universities also love 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen for its sharp social commentary and timeless romance. 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald is another favorite, offering a critique of the American Dream. For those interested in philosophy, 'The Republic' by Plato is often required reading. These classics are chosen because they challenge readers to think critically and reflect deeply on human nature and societal structures.
