For a relentless, page-turning feel, try 'The Woman in the Window' by A.J. Finn. The protagonist’s agoraphobia traps you in that New York townhouse with her, making every observation and doubt feel magnified. The first-person present tense really locks you into her spiraling anxiety. It perfectly captures that modern, isolated, screen-mediated suspense where you can’t be sure what’s real.
I’m always on the lookout for these, but sometimes that first-person POV in a modern thriller can feel a bit gimmicky. That said, Gillian Flynn absolutely nails it. 'Gone Girl' switches between first-person accounts, and Amy’s sections are a masterclass in unreliable narration. You’re right inside her head, but you still can’t trust a single thought. It makes the suspense so much more personal and claustrophobic.
A more recent one I tore through was 'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides. The therapist’s first-person perspective feels so immediate, and you’re just as in the dark as he is, trying to piece together what happened. The ending genuinely made me put the book down and just stare at a wall for a minute. It’s that kind of punch.
Oh, you have to check out 'Rock Paper Scissors' by Alice Feeney. The whole thing is told through alternating first-person chapters from a husband and wife on a weird, tense trip. You get both of their paranoid inner monologues, and the setting is this isolated, creepy converted chapel in Scotland. It’s so atmospheric. The contemporary part comes from their modern marriage issues and tech references, which just makes the suspense feel like it could happen to anyone. Feeney is great at making mundane details feel sinister.

From USA Today bestselling author and the author of Billionaire’s Secret Baby, comes a brand-new suspenseful romance about a socialite falling in love with the man ordered to protect her. With one hell of a twist, this steamy romance is a must read!
Agent Scott Tabor was as sexy walking away as he was coming toward you. You know the kind of attractive that makes your mouth dry, and your palms sweat before you ever speak to the man? Yeah… that’s my reality.
But let’s back up a second.
It all started a few weeks after my parents died in a freak accident. While I was trying to grieve, my long-lost uncle came into the picture. At first, I thought Uncle Frank was trying to make an effort—until I came home to a nightmare.
Forced to abandon my apartment, I turned to my lawyer and old boyfriend, Nate Livingston. Only his very pregnant wife wasn’t too happy with me hanging around. And who could blame her?
Meanwhile, Uncle Frank was doing everything in his power to make my life a living hell.
Enter Scott Tabor, FBI agent extraordinaire and my new roommate. I’m sure we can keep everything platonic. After all, we are both adults. Adults with wants, needs, and dare I say, an insane attraction for each other?
Her name was Cathedra. Leave her last name blank, if you will.
Where normal people would read, "And they lived happily ever after," at the end of every fairy tale story, she could see something else. Three different things.
Three words: Lies, lies, lies.
A picture that moves.
And a plea: Please tell them the truth.
All her life she dedicated herself to becoming a writer and telling the world what was being shown in that moving picture. To expose the lies in the fairy tales everyone in the world has come to know.
No one believed her. No one ever did.
She was branded as a liar, a freak with too much imagination, and an orphan who only told tall tales to get attention. She was shunned away by society. Loveless. Friendless.
As she wrote "The End" to her novels that contained all she knew about the truth inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, she also decided to end her pathetic life and be free from all the burdens she had to bear alone.
Instead of dying, she found herself blessed with a second life inside the fairy tale novels she wrote, and living the life she wished she had with the characters she considered as the only friends she had in the world she left behind.
Cathedra was happy until she realized that an ominous presence lurks within her stories. One that wanted to kill her to silence the only one who knew the truth.
