I find escapism in books that are almost aggressively fun. 'Dungeon Crawler Carl' is a wild ride—earth gets dungeonified, and a guy fights for survival with his ex-girlfriend's talking cat. It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but in the best way. The audiobook performance is phenomenal, adding a whole other layer. It's fast-paced, hilarious, and so over-the-top that you can't possibly think about your own problems while listening. Pure, unadulterated entertainment.

For a short, potent escape, try novellas. 'To Be Taught, If Fortunate' by Becky Chambers is a stunning sci-fi about a space exploration crew. It's hopeful, scientifically fascinating, and packs a huge emotional punch in a small package. You can finish it in one sitting and feel like you’ve been on a grand journey, which is perfect for a busy life.

Honestly? Re-read an old favorite. The comfort of knowing exactly what's coming, of revisiting characters who feel like friends, is the ultimate escapism for me. I just re-read 'The Hobbit' for the fifth time, and it was like coming home. No anxiety about plot twists, just pure enjoyment of the journey. Sometimes the best escape isn't a new world, but a familiar one you can slip into like a well-worn pair of slippers.

"Why did your feelings suddenly change?" Xander asked me looking completely lost. There was no way I could say it was because if I stayed with him, I might die. His cold eyes were piercing through me but it didn't make me fret.
I averted my eyes knowing my next reply was a big lie. "I love someone else now, and I can't stand you anymore. Since we would be together for two months, our parents' promise will be honoured." Then he froze unable to believe my words.

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.

Web serials are perfect because the escape is ongoing. You can check for updates daily. 'A Practical Guide to Evil' is a finished masterpiece. A young girl in a fantasy world where narrative tropes are real laws of physics decides to become a villain to fix her country.
The meta-commentary on stories is brilliant, the characters evolve dramatically, and the scale gets epic. You can get lost in it for months.
For a truly unique cozy vibe, seek out 'The Cybernetic Tea Shop' by Meredith Katz. It's a quiet, hopeful sci-fi novella about a technician and an ancient robot running a tea shop. It tackles themes of permanence, memory, and gentle companionship against a futuristic backdrop.
It’s short, beautifully paced, and leaves you with a quiet, melancholic but hopeful feeling. The coziness comes from the small, meaningful interactions in a world that could be cold but isn’t. It proves that sci-fi can be just as comforting as fantasy when it focuses on heart over hardware.
Maybe something about deep exploration? 'The Lost City of Z' by David Grann. It’s the true story of Percy Fawcett’s obsession with finding a mythical city in the Amazon and his disappearance.
The escape is into the suffocating, magnificent danger of the jungle and the singular, monomaniacal drive of an explorer. You feel the bugs, the disease, the impenetrable green wall of the rainforest. Your mind is occupied with survival logistics, historical detail, and the tantalizing mystery of what might be out there. It’s an adventure story where the setting itself is the most compelling and terrifying character. You come up for air feeling like you’ve been on an expedition.
