Some lists popping up about 'must-reads' for this year feel weirdly dated. 'The Bandit Queens' by Parini Shroff came out early last year, but I'm still seeing it everywhere. It's got a whole group of women in a rural Indian village, and the dynamics are so sharp and funny in a dark way. Not exactly a 2024 new release, but if you're looking for diversity in voices and a story that doesn't center a typical Western protagonist, it absolutely holds up.
On the newer side, 'The Berry Pickers' by Amanda Peters is one I keep hearing about. A Mi'kmaq family's story of a missing child, spanning decades. The perspective is deeply rooted in a specific Indigenous experience, and the writing handles grief and memory in a way that feels entirely its own. It's quiet but so potent.
I gravitate towards fantasy for this. 'The Water Outlaws' by S. L. Huang is a wuxia-inspired romp with a large, queer, found-family cast led by a woman warrior. It's a retelling of 'Water Margin,' so the scope is huge and the action is fantastic. Completely reframes the idea of who gets to be a hero. Also, 'To Shape a Dragon's Breath' is being called an Indigenous Goblin Train. The world-building is steeped in the author's Sámi heritage, which is a perspective I've never seen in dragon lore before. It feels fresh and necessary.
Honestly? I'm a bit skeptical of any 'best of 2024' list this early. Most of the big, buzzy books with diverse leads haven't even landed yet – they get hyped for the fall. I'm more interested in what slipped through last year. 'The Fraud' by Zadie Smith wasn't on my radar until recently. It's historical, based on a real trial, and has this incredible Jamaican servant character at the heart of it. Smith's prose is, as always, a masterclass in voice.
For something completely different, 'Chain-Gang All-Stars' is a brutal, satirical take on the prison system with a predominantly Black and brown cast. It's not an easy read, but the character work is fierce and unflinching. Makes most other dystopian fiction feel tame.

Welcome to the filthy heart of sin, baby.
All the Ways We Sin is a raw and unapologetic erotica collection where passion doesn’t just burn : It fucks you senseless
From the thrill of your dangerous stepbrother pinning you against the wall while your parents sleep down the hall… to the shame of sneaking into your mother’s fiancé’s bed.
These stories don’t play nice. They’re supernatural, sci-fi, taboo, LGBTQ+, romantic, dark, obsessive, and so dangerously addictive you’ll be touching yourself before you finish the first page.
Every chapter is a brand-new sin. A fresh and wet craving. A whole new world where your desire ...always...fucking wins.
Some stories will lick you slow and sweet until you’re trembling. Some will drag you into the dark, choke you with lust, and leave you bruised and dripping.
Some are wild, strange, and so twisted they’ll make you cum harder than you ever have in your life.
But every single one answers the same dripping question:
If nobody was watching…
how fucking dirty would you sin

“I want to taste you, can I?" He asked pleadingly. I was gonna say no, but the throbbing in my nether region said yes.
“Yes," I breathed shakily. He then started to kiss my hip bone trailing as he pulled my panties off.
“Raise your legs," he instructed and I obeyed. He pulled my legs apart and inhaled. “Exquisite," he praised as he lowered his head and gave me a long, luxurious lick.

I’ve noticed 2024 is shaping up to be an incredible year for diverse representation. One standout is 'This Day Changes Everything' by Edward Underhill, featuring a nonbinary protagonist navigating a whirlwind romance during a chaotic train ride. The book beautifully captures the fluidity of identity and first love. Another gem is 'Where the Rhythm Takes You' by Sarah Dass, a Caribbean-inspired retelling of 'Persuasion' with a strong Black heroine rediscovering herself through music and family legacy.
For fantasy lovers, 'The Poisons We Drink' by Bethany Baptiste offers a dark, witchy tale with a Black protagonist fighting systemic oppression in a magically divided America. It’s raw, powerful, and unapologetically political. On the contemporary side, 'The Boy You Always Wanted' by Michelle Quach explores cultural expectations through a Vietnamese-American girl’s journey to fulfill her grandfather’s last wish. Each of these books not only celebrates diversity but also weaves it seamlessly into gripping narratives that resonate deeply.
