You know it's balanced when the story could theoretically work as a compelling solo journey for each character. Take out the romance subplot, and you'd still have an interesting arc about a person overcoming a fear, mastering a skill, or healing a wound. The romance enhances that arc, adds emotional stakes, provides a unique relationship dynamic, but isn't the sole reason for the arc's existence. That's the test. If removing the love interest would collapse the protagonist's entire development, then the story hasn't balanced love and growth; it's made growth dependent on love, which is a much shakier foundation.

By giving the characters amnesia about each other's growth. No, really. A common pitfall is the 'I changed for you' trope, where a character reforms and then that's it, problem solved. Real growth is cyclical. The selfish character will have moments of selfishness again. The workaholic will relapse. The balanced love story shows the partner remembering the old versions, getting hurt, but also recognizing the effort and the overall trajectory. It's not about achieving a perfect, finished state of 'grown.' It's about loving someone who is actively, messily becoming, and choosing to walk that path with them, backslides and all.

Time for a maybe-unpopular opinion: sometimes the fanfiction versions of characters handle this balance better than the original canon. Because fanfic writers can zoom in on the psychological aftermath of big canon events, exploring how two characters would actually help each other heal and grow from trauma, in slow, granular detail. Without the constraints of a main plot, they can let the emotional and relational growth take center stage. The balance feels more intimate, more focused on the quiet, repairing moments that a blockbuster plot often skips over. The romance becomes a detailed study in mutual recovery.
Sometimes the growth is tangential to the central romance but sparked by it. A character falls in love with someone who has a passion—for art, science, a cause—and through loving that person, they develop an appreciation for that passion themselves. Their world expands. They grow intellectually or culturally.
Or, they love someone from a different background, and in learning to understand that world, they shed their own prejudices and become more nuanced thinkers. The growth isn’t just about being a better partner, but a more complete, curious, and engaged human being. The romance is the door that opens them up to a wider universe of experience, and they walk through it.
Managing stress as a team versus taking it out on each other. Life throws curveballs: work deadlines, family emergencies, financial stress. In unhealthy dynamics, partners snap at each other, becoming adversaries. In healthy growth, they learn to recognize when stress is the real enemy.
They might have a code word, or one might say, ‘I’m really stressed about this work thing, so if I’m short, it’s not about you.’ They give each other grace. They problem-solve together. ‘How can we get through this busy week?’ The stressor is external, and they face it as a united front. This ability to separate external pressure from internal conflict is a skill that develops over time and is a huge marker of a resilient, grown-up relationship.
