Okay, but has anyone actually had success with podcast interviews? I've been thinking about pitching myself to some smaller bookish podcasts, but it seems like a lot of work for maybe ten listeners. Is it worth the time compared to just writing the next book?

The biggest shift for me was treating my first book as the beginning of the conversation, not the final product. I used the back matter to ask direct questions: "What did you think of Character X's choice? Reply to this email and tell me!" I included links to a Pinterest board for my series mood board and my Spotify writing playlist. The book itself became a portal into a larger world. Readers who finished it didn't just close the cover; they had immediate pathways to engage further, and that kept the story alive in their minds long after they'd read the last page.

Quality covers and blurbs are non-negotiable gatekeepers. You can have the best story in the world, but if your cover looks like a bad Photoshop job from 2003 and your blurb is a rambling synopsis, no one will stick around to find out. Invest in a professional cover designer who understands your genre's visual language. Your cover is a promise. Your blurb is the hook. If those fail, you never get the chance to build readership at all. It's the brutal first impression that dictates whether you get to play the long game.

Readership is built on a pyramid of value. The free content (social media, blog, newsletter) forms the wide base—it's how people discover you and get a taste of your voice. The cheap/first book is the next level, a low-risk commitment. The full-priced series and sequels are the middle, where the real relationship is built. At the top, for your most devoted fans, are the special things: signed hardcovers, Patreon-exclusive short stories, early looks. Each tier offers more value and deeper access, rewarding loyalty and giving readers a clear path to follow if they want more of you.

Wow, the covers point is so true. I almost skipped an amazing dark academia book because the original cover made it look like a textbook. The author rebranded with a moody, illustrated cover a year later, and it completely blew up on BookTok. The story was always there, but the packaging finally signaled the right vibe to its ideal reader. It's wild how much that visual cue matters.

Pre-orders are crucial, but not for the reason most think. It's not just about day-one sales. It's about the extended marketing window. A book available for pre-order for 2-3 months gives you time to slowly build buzz, secure newsletter features, and get those early reviews lined up to post immediately on release day. You can run promotions aimed specifically at driving pre-orders, which then boost your book's rank the moment it goes live. It turns a single-day event into a sustained campaign. Plus, it gives you a concrete link to share long before the book is out.
I've tried nearly every platform out there, and each has its strengths. Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is the obvious choice for its massive reach and seamless integration with Kindle devices. Their royalty rates are competitive, and the print-on-demand service is a game-changer.
But don't overlook Draft2Digital—it distributes to multiple retailers like Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo without the hassle of uploading separately. Their formatting tools are user-friendly, especially for beginners. For those wanting more control, Gumroad is fantastic for direct sales with customizable pricing and instant payouts. Lastly, if you're aiming for a polished look, Vellum is my go-to for creating beautifully designed ebooks, though it's Mac-only.
the key is treating it like running a small business. You can't just write a book and throw it online; you need a plan. Start with professional editing—no shortcuts here. A polished manuscript is non-negotiable. Then, invest in a eye-catching cover design because readers do judge books by their covers. Platforms like Amazon KDP and Draft2Digital make distribution easy, but marketing is where most stumble. Building an email list early helps, and leveraging social media consistently is crucial. Engaging with readers through blogs or newsletters keeps them hooked. It’s a grind, but seeing your book take off makes it worth it.
