Isn't it also about the business model? Web fiction often builds an audience through free chapters, then monetizes through Patreon, advanced chapters, or eventual ebooks. The style has to be addictive enough to drive those voluntary payments. That can lead to a style heavy on perpetual escalation and unresolved romantic or plot tension. Ebook style, sold as a complete product, needs to deliver a conclusive, satisfying arc to justify the one-time purchase. The economic incentive shapes the narrative structure.

I've seen writers fail by not adapting. A beautifully written, slow-burn literary story posted as a web serial will likely languish without readers, not because it's bad, but because the style is mismatched to the platform's culture and consumption habits. Conversely, a fast-paced, trope-heavy web serial published as an ebook without substantial editing to deepen character and theme might get panned for being shallow. Understanding the venue is part of the writer's craft now.

Accessibility is a huge factor. The best novels often have high barriers—complex prose, deep thematic layers, slow burns. Web fiction trends toward radical accessibility: straightforward prose, immediate hooks, and clear emotional stakes.
However, the influence comes in the form of 'aspirational' templates. New web authors often start by trying to write the next 'Stormlight Archive', with all its complexity. The trend is shaped by them slowly learning to simplify, to prioritize clarity and momentum over poetic density. The great novels set a quality bar that many strive for, but the platform's demands create a trend that often moves in a different, more populist direction.
Reading widely in your genre is the unspoken grammar book. You absorb the rhythm and conventions of, say, hardboiled detective noir versus epic fantasy. You internalize sentence patterns, pacing, and diction. Then, when you sit down to write, that absorbed style becomes a foundation you can build on or react against. It’s osmosis, but it works.
Visual thinking is key. Even in text-only formats, the most successful stories are incredibly cinematic. Scenes are blocked like movie shots, action is easy to follow, and character descriptions are often minimal but evocative, letting the reader's mind (or fanart) fill in the details. You can tell many writers are influenced by manga and anime in how they visualize and pace action sequences or emotional reveals. The technique is writing for the mind's eye with a clarity that feels almost directed.
Economy of language defines the form. A novel can afford a slow burn; a short story needs to stab straight to the heart. Every word, every image, must pull double duty, establishing character, setting, and mood simultaneously. The prose itself often becomes unsettling—either through stark, clinical detachment or a feverish, lyrical intensity that mirrors a character's unraveling. The ending is paramount; it needs to resonate, to land with a finality that feels both surprising and inevitable. A weak ending can ruin a perfectly built tale, while a strong one elevates everything that came before.
