Just ripped the first page out of my draft for the twelfth time. Hooks are agony. What finally clicked was realizing I don't need a meteor strike on page one. Sometimes the hook is just a character being unreasonably, specifically themselves. A character meticulously lining up three pencils on a desk while their world burns outside the window tells me more than an explosion. The promise isn't always event, it's voice. It's the assurance the narrator knows something you don't, and they're going to let you in, but slowly. My last attempt began with a librarian marking a map with locations people disappeared from, not where they were found. That tiny shift in focus did more than any 'bang' could.
Forget 'high concept' for a second. A compelling opening is often a contract about tone. A sarcastic, weary first line sets a different expectation than a lush, descriptive one. The hook is you agreeing to the author's particular brand of weird for the next three hundred pages. So the pressure's off making it universally shocking. It just has to be authentically, peculiarly yours. That weird little detail you're afraid is too niche? That's probably it. Start there.

Honestly, half the time I'm hooked by the fanart or meme community before I even read the book. A compelling opening is crucial, but so is the fandom energy around it. They're not unrelated—a great opening gives fans something to instantly latch onto and talk about.

What's the emotional core? Loneliness? Ambition? Grief? Find an image or a small action that embodies that core emotion for your protagonist, and build the opening around it. If the core is longing, maybe they're watching a ship sail to a place they can't go.

I like when an opening scene does double or triple duty. It introduces the character through action, establishes the world's rules through that action, and hints at the larger thematic conflict. A character bargaining in a market can show their cleverness, the world's economic/social structure, and introduce a theme about value, deception, or survival. This efficiency feels masterful and immerses the reader quickly. The tone becomes one of density and richness—a sense that every detail is considered and connected, rewarding close attention.

Sometimes the action isn't physical. It could be a furious, public argument at a gala, or a hacker's frantic keystrokes as a firewall collapses. The principles are the same: immediate stakes, revealed character, and a forward momentum that leaves a new problem in its wake. Emotional or intellectual action can be just as gripping as a duel if the consequences are personal and severe.

I'm a huge advocate for starting with a lie the narrator tells themselves. It sets up an incredible arc right from page one. Something like, 'I was perfectly fine being alone,' when every subsequent action proves they're desperate for connection. The reader gets to be in on the secret, watching the character's self-delusion unravel. It creates instant depth and a promise of development. The opening becomes a thesis statement for their entire emotional journey.
