I’m always on the lookout for books that capture that same rebellious, adventurous spirit as 'Rapunzel’s Revenge,' and one that comes to mind is 'The Girl Who Drank the Moon' by Kelly Barnhill. It’s not a graphic novel, but it’s got this lush, fairy-tale feel with a heroine who’s powerful in unexpected ways. The prose is gorgeous, and the way it plays with magic and destiny feels really fresh. For graphic novel fans, 'Princeless' by Jeremy Whitley is fantastic—it’s about a princess who rescues herself, and the humor and art style are super engaging.
Also, don’t sleep on 'Castle Waiting' by Linda Medley. It’s a quieter, more slice-of-life take on fairy tales, but the characters are so well-written, and the world feels lived-in and cozy. It’s like a warm blanket with a side of sly wit.
If you loved 'Rapunzel’s Revenge' for its spunky heroine and wild-west twist on fairy tales, you’ll probably dig 'Calamity Jack' next—it’s the sequel, and it’s just as fun but with more heist vibes. Shannon Hale’s writing is so lively, and the artwork by Nathan Hale (no relation!) adds this energetic, comic-book punch that makes the story fly off the page. For something with a similar mix of adventure and humor, 'Zita the Spacegirl' by Ben Hatke is a gem. It’s sci-fi instead of fantasy, but Zita’s got that same determination and heart as Rapunzel, plus the stakes feel huge in the best way.
Another great pick is 'Nimona' by Noelle Stevenson. It’s got that perfect blend of humor, heart, and subverted expectations—plus, the dynamic between Nimona and her would-be villain mentor is hilarious and touching. If you’re into graphic novels with strong female leads, 'Lumberjanes' might also hit the spot. It’s more about friendship and supernatural camp shenanigans, but the girls’ camaraderie and the quirky mysteries give off a similar vibe of fearless fun.
You know what’s underrated? 'The Witch Boy' by Molly Knox Ostertag. It’s a graphic novel about breaking gender norms in magic, and the protagonist’s journey has that same mix of determination and heart as Rapunzel’s. The art’s expressive, and the story’s got this quiet power to it. Another sleeper hit is 'Roller Girl' by Victoria Jamieson—not a fairy tale, but the main character’s grit and growth reminded me of Rapunzel’s arc. Plus, roller derby is just cool.

If you're into the rebellious charm of 'Princess Brat' but want something with a bit more depth for young adults, you should check out 'The Cruel Prince' by Holly Black. It's got that same mix of defiance and royal drama, but with a darker, more intricate plot. The protagonist, Jude, is fierce and cunning, navigating a world of faerie politics where every move could be her last. It's packed with betrayals, alliances, and a slow-burn romance that keeps you hooked.
Another great pick is 'Red Queen' by Victoria Aveyard. Mare Barrow starts off as a nobody but ends up tangled in a world of power and deception. The story blends rebellion with supernatural abilities, making it a thrilling read. Both books capture that 'Princess Brat' energy but elevate it with higher stakes and richer world-building. They're perfect if you love a protagonist who refuses to bow down.
If you loved the dark, twisted royalty vibes of 'Wicked Princess,' you might dive into 'The Cruel Prince' by Holly Black. It’s got that same blend of political intrigue, morally gray characters, and a protagonist who’s just as cunning as she is fierce. Jude Duarte’s journey from human outsider to power player in the faerie court feels like a natural next step if you enjoyed the ruthless ambition in 'Wicked Princess.' Plus, the enemies-to-lovers tension is chef’s kiss.
Another gem is 'Three Dark Crowns' by Kendare Blake—sibling rivalry taken to a bloody extreme. Three queens, one throne, and a battle to the death? It’s like 'Wicked Princess' but with triple the scheming. The world-building is lush, and the characters are so flawed you can’t help but root for them even when they’re making terrible choices. If you’re into complex female leads who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, this one’s a must-read.
