I think sometimes the focus on 'inclusive storylines' can make books feel a bit...tick-box, you know? Like the romance is secondary to checking representation boxes. I've DNF'd a few that read like a sociology paper with a kissing scene tacked on.

That said, when it's done right, it's incredible. 'Heartstopper' is the obvious example—it's just so genuinely sweet and character-driven that the queer representation feels effortless, not the whole point. For something grittier, 'The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School' balances family drama, cultural pressure, and a secret crush with a lot of humor and heart. The romance there feels earned because the characters are messy and fully realized first.

I guess my take is, look for authors writing from an authentic place, not just following a trend. The best ones make you forget you're reading an 'inclusive' book—you're just reading a great romance that happens to have characters who reflect the real world.

Absolutely. The market's exploded for these lately, which is such a relief. A few years back, you had to dig for them, but now bookstores have whole shelves. I just finished 'Felix Ever After' and it completely wrecked me in the best way—it tackles trans identity and self-love with this raw honesty that felt so real, not like a lesson. 'You Should See Me in a Crown' by Leah Johnson is another favorite; a Black queer girl running for prom queen? Yes, please. It's joyful and full of heart.

Don't sleep on fantasy romance either, where the inclusivity is baked into the world-building. 'Cinderella Is Dead' by Kalynn Bayron is a fierce, queer retelling that flips the script entirely. It's less about finding a prince and more about burning the system down, with a sweet romance growing in the ashes. The variety now means there's something for every mood, whether you want a fluffy contemporary or a plot-heavy adventure where the romance is just one part of a bigger, inclusive picture.

Omg, yes! Check out Casey McQuiston's 'I Kissed Shara Wheeler'—queer chaos in a Southern high school, hilarious and heartfelt. Or 'Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating' for a delightful fake-dating trope with cultural layers. Alice Oseman's entire bibliography is a gift to the genre. The stories are out there, and they're getting better all the time.
