Take two characters who would absolutely hate each other and force them to work together. The fastidious scholar and the chaotic thief. The war-hardened soldier and the idealistic pacifist. The friction between their worldviews generates endless dialogue and conflict, and the arc of their relationship can become the story's backbone.

I hit a creative wall constantly. What gets me moving is writing the dumbest, most clichéd version of a scene I can think of. The princess is rescued by the knight, the detective finds the obvious clue. Once it's down, my brain rebels and starts coming up with ways to subvert it. Making something bad on purpose removes the pressure and often leads to a more interesting twist.

What's the biggest lie your character believes about themselves or the world? The entire story is then the process of that lie being challenged, shattered, and perhaps replaced. Brainstorming becomes about designing the events and other characters that serve as the most effective (and painful) instruments of that truth-revealing.

Steal from history, but file off the serial numbers. Read an article about a strange historical event, then change the setting, gender, or technology level. The siege of a castle becomes a corporate takeover. A famed explorer's journey becomes a spaceship's voyage. The real events provide a solid skeleton of conflict and stakes that you can flesh out with your own ideas.

Start with the villain's plan. Make it brilliant, logical, and almost sympathetic. Then, build your heroes and plot as the counter-move to that plan. A strong antagonist with clear goals makes the protagonist's journey more defined and the conflict more intense from the very first brainstorming session.

Flip the protagonist-antagonist relationship. What if the story is told from the perspective of the person we'd normally consider the antagonist, and their goals are sympathetic or logical from their point of view? The 'hero' is an obstacle to progress, stability, or necessary change. Brainstorm the antagonist's manifesto. What is their perfect world? Why is it better than the current one or the hero's proposed one? Making them the POV character forces you to humanize them and build a compelling rationale. The fresh idea is in the moral ambiguity and the challenge to the reader's default allegiance. Who do they root for when both sides have a point?

Consume media in a genre you hate. If you write fantasy, read literary domestic fiction. If you write romance, watch hard sci-fi. Your brain, frustrated and out of its comfort zone, will start rebelliously asking, 'Okay, but what if this was done my way?' You'll begin mentally rewriting the boring family drama with a hidden magic system or adding a passionate enemies-to-lovers subplot to the spaceship crew. This cross-pollination is gold. You're not copying; you're translating tropes and structures across incompatible formats, which creates something genuinely new. Your unique voice emerges from the tension between what you're consuming and what you inherently love.

Tropes are your friend, not your enemy. Seriously, pick a trope you love—'enemies to lovers,' 'chosen one in hiding,' 'heist gone wrong'—and then brainstorm ten ways to subvert the expected outcome. What if the chosen one is desperately trying to avoid the prophecy because they've seen how it ends for everyone else? That simple twist can generate a whole novel's worth of plot and character dilemmas.

Exploit your own ignorance. Pick a topic you know nothing about—beekeeping, noir film theory, deep-sea welding. Start researching it just enough to be dangerous. Your beginner's mind will make strange, fresh connections that an expert would never make, and you'll ask naive questions that could be fascinating plot drivers. Just remember to research thoroughly later for authenticity!
