I'd steer clear of most pop-business novels and go for literary fiction that happens to be set in a corporate world. 'Then We Came to the End' by Joshua Ferris is a hilarious and heartbreaking novel about an ad agency during layoffs. The power struggles are muted, pathetic, and deeply human—jockeying for favor, stealing office chairs, the terror of being irrelevant. It explores leadership vacuums and what happens when the people in charge have no idea what they're doing.

It's less about how to lead and more about how it feels to be led, or misled, which is equally valuable.

Can we talk about manga for a second? 'The Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa' is an unbelievable deep dive. It's about a middle-aged, burnt-out construction worker, not a CEO, but his desperate attempts to gain respect and control over his pathetic life are the most visceral power struggle I've ever read. The leadership is entirely internal—leading yourself out of despair. For a more corporate setting, 'Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service' has arcs about office politics and company towns that are surreal and brilliant.

Sometimes fiction from outside the expected genre hits the theme harder.

I tend to prefer biographies for real leadership lessons, but if we're sticking to fiction, 'The Last Tycoon' by F. Scott Fitzgerald is poignant. It's about a brilliant studio executive, Monroe Stahr, who holds everything together through sheer force of vision and personal will. The power struggle is between art and commerce, old Hollywood and new. His leadership is charismatic but lonely, showing how the person at the top often has the least freedom. It's unfinished, which somehow makes its portrait of fading power more haunting.

Has anyone brought up 'The Remains of the Day'? Stevens the butler's obsession with professional 'dignity' is a heartbreaking study in delegated leadership and subservience. His entire existence is about managing a great household with flawless efficiency, while utterly missing the larger moral power struggles happening around him (his employer's Nazi sympathies). It's a masterclass in the dangers of confusing service with leadership, and duty with moral abdication.

I get why people recommend the big, flashy books, but sometimes a simple parable says more. 'Who Moved My Cheese?' is obvious, but 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team' by Patrick Lencioni, written as a leadership fable, is genuinely useful. It lays out how absence of trust, fear of conflict, and inattention to results create dysfunctional power dynamics. The fictional CEO's struggle to turn her executive team around feels real because it focuses on interpersonal dynamics, not stock prices.

It's a practical manual disguised as a story.

What are the best novels for business leadership lessons?

Okay, I'll admit I haven't read most of these. I came looking for a quick list of five books to sound smart in a meeting, and now I feel utterly unread. Back to lurking for me!

Which novels about business teach strategy through corporate drama?

You know, I never consciously read for business lessons, but now that I think about it, 'The Remains of the Day' is all about strategy. It's the strategy of perfect service, of subsuming one's identity to an ideal (and a flawed master). Stevens the butler is managing the 'household corporation' with impeccable, tragic strategy. The drama is in what that strategic commitment costs him personally. It's a lesson in the strategy of dedication, but also a warning about the strategic error of misplaced loyalty. Deeply moving and unexpectedly insightful.
