What Challenges Do Fake Heroes Face In Redemption Storylines?

Fake hero redemption arcs get tricky because the story has to make you believe they weren't a hero all along while convincing you they can become one. The biggest hurdle is audience forgiveness. Take 'The Poppy War's' Rin, or even a character like Joe from 'You' if you squint—the narrative shows you their brutal actions upfront. You can't retroactively paint them as purely good. The redemption has to stem from them acknowledging the harm they caused, not from the world deciding they were secretly noble. That acknowledgment scene is a minefield. If it's too easy, it feels unearned; if it's too brutal, it can break the character beyond a point where any future heroic act feels plausible.

Another layer is the external perception. A real hero fallen from grace has a reputation to rebuild. A fake hero never had that goodwill to begin with. Their 'redemption' often looks like a villain trying to buy a better label, which everyone in-story is right to distrust. The most satisfying ones I've seen, like some antagonists in web serials like 'Worm', force the character to operate without any expectation of praise or even basic trust. Their actions have to be genuinely self-sacrificing and useful, often anonymously, because accepting public credit would undermine the entire point. It becomes less about becoming a 'hero' in the eyes of others and more about becoming a person who can live with their own reflection, which is a much quieter, more internal journey.

That internal journey is where the real challenge lies for writers. You have to balance the character's lingering flaws—the selfishness, the cowardice, the ego that made them fake it in the first place—with genuine growth. If they become a saint overnight, it's boring and false. I prefer when they stumble, when they backslide into old habits of manipulation, but catch themselves. The redemption is in the catching, not in a flawless performance. Ultimately, the story's success hinges on making me, the reader, want to see them try, even if I never fully like them or believe they've 'made up' for anything. It's about the effort, not the absolution.

Honestly, the main challenge is keeping me from rolling my eyes. A lot of these storylines hinge on a tragic backstory reveal that's supposed to explain everything—'oh, he was only pretending to be the Chosen One because the real prophecy would've gotten his brother killed' or whatever. That just feels like an excuse. A real redemption for a fake hero needs to start with them admitting they enjoyed the fraud, the power, the admiration. They liked being fake. The change comes from realizing that empty feeling afterward is worse than the temporary high. I need to see them actively choosing to do the right thing when it costs them everything they gained from the lie, with no one watching to give them credit. If the narrative lets them keep their stolen reputation, it's not redemption; it's a upgrade.
